Death of John William Curless
Astoria Argus Searchlight, May 7, 1913
Wealthy Farmer Killed
John Curless, of Woodland Township, Met Tragic Death In a Runaway Accident Early Wedensday Morning. Operating Manure Spreader. Coroner Ray, of Cuba, was notified and arrived at noon and is conducting the Inquest as we go to press.
Sad news was received in this city Wednesday morning of the tragic death of John Curless, a prominent and influential farmer of Woodland township. His unfortunate death occurred at about 7:15, while operating a manure spreader in a field adjoining his residence, about a quarter of a mile from the house.
The exact circumstances which caused the accident will likely never be known. The facts leading up to the sad occurrance as near as we are able to learn, are as follows. A young team was hitched to the loaded spreader. Mr. Curless decided that he would take out the first load, to see how the team would perform, after which it would be turned over to his hired help. He had driven to the opposite side of the field, with the machine in operation and in making the turn from all appearances the team became frightened and turned abruptly evidently throwing Mr. Curless from his seat. The team then ran in the direction of the horse retracing the swath it had just spread.
His two sons, Granville and Jimmy were in the same field operating a field drag a short distance away. They saw the team running and noticed t heir father hanging on the side of the spreader toward them with his leg occasionally touching the ground. From his appearance they were of the opinion that his clothing had caught on a small lever which regulates the number of loads to the acre.
He was carried about 50 yeards from where the turn was made, when he fell to the ground in such a position that the rear left wheel passed over his body, in the region of the chest. When the wheel struck the body, his son stated the machine bounced about three feet. They saw him raise to his elbow, after the machine passed over him and throw up one hand, looking in the direction of the house. Granville, the eldest son, hurried to his assistance and on reaching his side, the father gasped twice and expired.
John Lamb and Sherman Foster, who were working at a saw mill nearby, arrived a few minutes afterward. The body was then taken to the residence and on examination was found to be terribly crushed.
The coroner was notified and on his arrival the following jury was empaneled: F. G. Bader, Thomas Horton, Frank Thompson, E. M. Price, A. N. Price, and J. D. Waggoner. As we go to press the inquest was being held.
Mr. Curless was born September 23, 1865. He is survived by his wife and six children namely: Mrs. Rose Parks, Granville, Bonney, James, Bennie and Robert. Also his aged mother who is past 70 years of age, four brothers and one sister: Frank, Edward, Thomas, Mrs. William Dutton of Woodland township, and William of near Ray.
Mr. Curless was one of the largest land owners in Woodland township, owning 2,030 acres of valuable land, half of which is highly improved. Was a member of the M.W.A. and Masonic lodges. At this time no arrangements have been made for the funeral. The entire community is in sympathy with the bereaved family.

Bessie Nell Emig nee Elgin, was born in Woodland township near Astoria, Ill., Jan. 5, 1887, and died at her home near Table Grove, Jan. 26, 1918, age 31 years and 21 days.
For seven years she has been a constant sufferer from sugar diabetes, which was the immediate cause of her death.
She was united in marriage to Solomon Emig, Jan. 2, 1902.  This union was blessed with three daughters, Stella, age 15, Cathrine, age 12 and Della, age 11. These with her husband, parents, one brother, Geo. H., and two sisters, Mrs. S. G. Bucher and Mrs. W. O. Parry all of Astoria with a host of relatives and friends are left to mourn her loss.
Mrs. Emig bore her suffering patiently, forgetting her own to help those that were near and dear to her.
She was a kind and faithful wife and loving mother and will be greatly missed in the home where she was so much needed.  All that loving hands could do was done, but nothing could stay the hand of death.
Funeral services were held at the U. B. church in Astoria Tuesday forenoon at eleven o'clock, conducted by Rev. D. E. Baer, of Canton, Ill., assisted by Rev. J. E. Fry, pastor of the local U. B. church. Interment in the Astoria cemetery.

Obituary of Stella Belle Emig
unknown paper
Young Life is Ended, Daughter Answers Summons of Death, Called Away February Eight - Funeral Sunday
The funeral services of Stella Belle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Emig, was held Sunday at 12:00 o'clock at the United Brethren church in this city.  Rev. D. E. Bear, of Canton, conducted the services and spoke words of tenderest sympathy and comfort.  He was assisted by Rev. J. E. Fry, pastor of the church.  Interment was made in the Astoria cemetery, beside her mother who departed this life on January 26.
Stella Belle Emig, daughter of Solomon and Bessie Emig, was born January 19, 1903, near Vermont, Illinois, and died at her home near Table Grove, Feb. 8, 1918, aged fifteen years and twenty-one days.
Since March 20, 1917, she has been afflicted with dropsy; at times it seemed as if the end was near but she would rally and for the last two months seemed to begetting better and was again able to be up and help with the household duties, but a sudden change took place for the worse about a week ago and the end came unexpectedly.  All medical aid and care that was possible was given during her sickness.  She was a patient sufferer and retained consciousness to the last.  The day before she passed she expressed a desire to meet her Mamma.
She leaves her father, two sisters, Cassie and Della, a host of relatives and friends to mourn her loss.  Her mother preceded her just fourteen days.  Surely the hand of affliction has fallen heavily upon this family and they deserve our sincere sympathy in their bereavement.
"There is no death!  The stars go down
     To rise upon some fairer shore;
And bright in Heaven's jeweled crown
     They shine forever more."

Obituary for John W. Wheat
Rushville Times, April 3, 1902
Death of an Old Resident
John W. Wheat, second son of Joseph and Mary Wheat, was born near Lexington, Kentucky, January 6, 1817, and died March 28, 1902.  He came to Illinois in the year 1835 and located in Schuyler county, where he has since resided.
On June 9, 1842, he was married to Miss Julia Snyder, to which union were born fourteen children, seven of whom preceded the father into the silent halls of death. Altho he was born of Catholic parents, and continued steadfastly in the faith for thirty-two years, he, in the year 1849, choosing rather to be numbered among the sons of God, sought and found redemption from sin thru Jesus Christ, and united with the Baptist church of Littleton.  Altho he was not a member of the society at the time of his death, he never for a moment ceased to hold sacred the beloved doctrines of the church of his choice.  He was a man of deep religious piety and never lost an opportunity to encourage those endeavoring to live christian lives, or point sinners to the "Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world."
During his continued illness, which he bore with Job-like patience, the theme of his conversation was relative to the children's hope of eternal life.  So entirely was his life given to the work of his Master that he never ceased to use his personal influence in bringing souls to Christ until the angel of death called the sainted spirit to a life that hath no end.
He leaves a wife, a brother, George Wheat, and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Hagen of St. Paul, Kansas; also seven children: Mrs. Anna M. Payne of Denver, Col.; Mrs. Theodore DeWitt of Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. James Arvin of Macomb, Ill.: Mrs. Frank Yaap of Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. Jesse Hale and Miss Laura Wheat of Allison, Iowa; twenty-one grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren, besides many friends to mourn the loss of a devoted husband, a beloved brother, a loving father and a noble citizen.
  A Friend.

Death and Obituary of Albert M. Utter
Rushville Times, February 23 1911
Found Dead In Switchyard
Albert Utter of Frederick Was Killed In Beardstown Friday Night
Albert Utter of Frederick, aged about forty years, was found dead in the lower switchyard at Beardstown about 3 o'clock Saturday morning. The manner of his death is a mystery, as he was not found until sometime after a train had passed over his body, which was frightfully mangled. Bruises about his head, and cuts upon his body, has led his family to believe that he was first assaulted in the yards and then thrown upon the track to make it appear that he was struck by the train and killed, and thus forever hide a foul crime.
Evidence brought out at the coroner's inquest failed to throw any light on the manner of his death, which is supposed to have occurred between 2 and 3 o'clock Saturday morning. The jury returned a verdict that he came to his death by being struck by a train.
Mr. Utter's death is a particularly sad one by reason of the fact that he leaves a widow and family of six small children. Then, too, his mother, Mrs. George Utter, is seriously ill, and it has feared that the shock of her son's death will bring about a collapse.
Funeral services were held at Frederick on Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock; interment in Messerer cemetery.

Death of Thomas J. Payne
Rushville Times, December 1, 1881
Sudden Death
We were greatly surprised Tuesday on learning of the sudden death of Mr. Thomas J. Payne, a well-known and respected citizen of Littleton township.  His death was caused from strangulated hernia, he having been afflicted with a rupture for many years.  He called at The Times office last Saturday to report the death of his brother's child, having came to town after a load of lumber.  While loading it on his wagon he lifted too hard and brought on the trouble, but was able to start home.  He had to stop, however, at the residence of Wm. H. McCreery, where he was treated by Drs. Slack and Seeley.  Sunday afternoon his condition had improved to such extent that it was considered safe for him to start home, but the ride caused further trouble and he gradually grew worse until he passed away to the great unknown, which happened at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Mr. Payne was a native of Indiana, we believe, his parents removing to this county when he was a boy, where he has spent most of his life.  As a man he commanded the respect of his acquaintances, and as a husband and father he possessed the warmest affection of his family.  The funeral services were attended at the Baptist church in Littleton, of which he was a member, where a large concourse of his old friends and neighbors gathered to pay him the fitting tribute of respect.  Thus another family circle has been broken in upon by death, and wife and six children have been left in sadness.  But to cheer them they have the consolation of the gospel and the tender memories of undying affection.  May the God of all grace support them in the great loss that has thus come to them.
