Death and Obituary of Robert Harry Aten
Rushville Times, January 27, 1949
Robert Aten Drowned In River Monday; Browning Youth Fell From Boat Near Beardstown
Tragedy struck again in Schuyler county this week when Robert
Aten, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Aten of Browning, lost his
life by drowning early Monday morning in the Illinois river at
Beardstown.
Young Aten and Guy Robertson, also of Browning, were both
employes of the Duluth-Superior Construction Co., and had reported for
work at midnight on this company's suction dredge, which is being used
on the Coal Creek Drainage and Levee district job in progress since
last summer.
When something went wrong with the suction line, Aten and
Robertson left the dredge in a small boat to make repairs. In
some manner the small boat tipped, throwing both men into the river.
Robertson was saved from drowning by Dale Sherrill of Browning,
who jumped into the icy water from the dredge and made the
rescue. Aten is reported to have yelled that he would make it all
right, and told the men to look after Robertson. After the
latter's rescue, other men on the dredge could find no trace of
Aten. The fatal accident occurred about 2:30 a.m., and it was not
until eight hours later that Aten's body was recovered.
Browning Men Lend Aid
When word reached the young men's home town of Browning about
6:30 a.m., at least 20 men from there gathered boats, hooks, and
trammel nets and went to the scene of the accident, about a mile below
the Beardstown highway bridge, where the dredge had been stationed.
They worked with other crews trying to recover the body, which
was finally found a quarter of a mile from the scene of the accident,
at 10:30 a.m. by Floyd Lane of Browning, who was working with a mussel
bar. Gerald Bollinger of Browning pulled Aten's body from the
river. The body was brought to the Voorhees funeral home in
Rushville, where Dr. V. M. Corman, coroner, conducted an inquest in
which the verdict was that death came from accidental drowning.
George Lisenbee, Dale Sherrill and Walter Defenbaugh testified
at the inquest. Lisenbee stated that they had wound a cable into
the boat to take it over to an anchor, and when the slack was taken up
the boat tipped so that Aten and Robertson lost their balance and fell
into the river. Members of the coroner's jury were George
Carrick, Albert Thompson, Frank Briggs, Cecil Redshaw, Gene Knous and
Carl Brooks.
Robertson, when rescued from the river, was first taken to the
Schmitt Memorial hospital in Beardstown, and was later removed to his
home in Browning, where he soon recovered from the exposure.
Funeral Held Wednesday
Following the inquest, Aten's body was taken to the Cline
funeral home in Beardstown, and was then removed to the Aten home in
Browning. Funeral services were held Wednesday at p.m., at the
Browning Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Leland Walls.
Interment was in the Browning cemetery.
Young Aten was well known in Rushville, where he was graduated
from high school with the class of 1947. Besides his parents, he
is survived by two sisters, Virginia and Rosemary; a grandmother, Mrs.
G. C. Snyder, and a great-grandmother, Mrs. Ida B. Kloker.

Obituary of Nancy Jane Rittenhouse Burnside
Rushville Times, Nov. 3, 1955
Funeral Service Will Be Friday for Mrs. Burnsude, 90
Mrs. Nancy Jane Burnside, widow of Thomas Burnside, and a member
of the pioneer Rittenhouse - Kelly families of Bainbridge township,
passed away Tuesday morning, October 25, at the Culbertson hospital,
where she had been a patient for the past several weeks. Her age was 90
years, two months and two days.
Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at the
Free Methodist church, the Rev. Wayne Sill officiating. Burial will be
in the Rushville cemetery.
Nancy Jane Rittenhouse was the youngest of 12 children born to
William and Nancy Kelly Rittenhouse, her birth date being August 23,
1865. She was the last surviving member of her family.
As a child she attended the district school in her home
community, and at the age of 12 she was converted to the cause of
Christ, and united with the Baptist rural near her home. In later years
she became affiliated with the Free Methodist church, and down through
the years she remained a loyal member of the church of her choice.
It was on October 26, 1882 that she was united in marriage to
Thomas Burnside, and went as a happy bride to establish their home on a
farm in her native township. To this happy marriage was born 10
children, five daughters and five sons, all of whom grew to maturity
under the influence of Christian parents, and the all-wise counsel of a
devoted and understanding mother. Two children, Ralph, age 8, and
Nettie Hildreth, 4 months, died.
It was a never ending sorrow to Mrs. Burnside when she was
bereft of her two soldier sons, Thomas Jr., and Roscoe, in World War 1,
and on February 12, 1923, she was bereft of her husband, with whom she
had lived in happy companionship for more than 40 years. Hiding the
sorrow and loneliness brought about by her triple bereavements, the
character of this good woman was portrayed in her daily life, by the
manner in which she, in so many ways, brought happiness into the homes
of her children, other relatives, and her friends, who were legion, and
to whom she was always termed as "Aunt Nancy."
She is survived by four daughters, Lillie, the widow of Lyle
Campbell and a resident of Springfield; Della, the wife of Dwight
Young, of Rushville; Ethel, the of Robert Vancil, of Versailles, and
Mary, the wife of Floyd Taylor, of Adair; two sons, Charles Burnside of
Rushville and Leslie Burnside, of San Francisco, Calif.; 19
grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband, three sons and one
daughter, her parents, three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Montague, Mrs. Mary
Hatfield and Mrs. Rose Grist; eight brothers, Henry, Enoch, Washington,
Marion, James, Thomas, William and Hiram Rittenhouse.
