Browning - Doris E. Morris, 80, of Browning died at 7 p.m. Friday, June 23, 1995, at her residence.
Born May 29, 1915, in Browning to Benjamin and Sarah Ann Walton
Cox, she married Wilbur Morris on Dec. 23, 1938, in Palmyra, Mo. He
died July 24, 1990.
One son, one grandson, two sisters and two brothers also preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, Neal of Browning and Phillip of Kim,
Colo.; two brothers, Homer Cox of Rushville and Ralph Cox of Astoria;
one granddaughter; and one great-grandchild.
She was a member of Browning Church of Christ.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Shawgo Memorial Home in
Astoria. John Ruppel and Pat Clements will officiate. Visitation will
be from 6 to 8 tonight at the memorial home. Burial will be in Bader
Cemetery in Bader.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Canton.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood

Rushville - Thomas J. "Tom" Newell, 81, of 120 1/2 E. Clinton
St. died at 5:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, 1991, at Midway Hospital in St.
Paul, Minn.
Born Dec. 4, 1909, in Frederick Township, Schuyler County, to
Frank and Eva Suddeth Newell, he married Imogene Johnson on Nov. 9,
1931, in Rushville. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Draine of
St. Paul; three brothers, Thurman of Beardstown, Dale of Jacksonville
and Homer L. of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; two grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by two sisters.
He owned and operated a restaurant in Rushville for 25 years and
then worked as a professional chef in Chicago until retiring.
He later returned to Rushville, where he and his wife were
coordinators of the Meals Plus Programs in Schuyler and Brown Counties
until 1985. A World War II Navy veteran, he was a member of Schuyler
American Legion Post 4, Executive Chefs of Chicago and Rushville
Masonic Lodge 9, AF&AM. He also was a member of the Browning Church
of Christ in Browning.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Worthington Funeral Home
in Rushville, with Collis Trone officiating. Visitation will be from 6
to 8 tonight at the funeral home, where Masonic services will be
conducted by Masonic Lodge 9 at 8. Burial will be in the Rushville City
Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to his church or to the Cass County In-Home Health Care Program.

Canton - Violet Lorraine Newell, 67, of 129 S. First Ave.,
formerly of 314 Fulton Place, died at 2:38 p.m. Friday, April 25, 1997,
at Graham Hospital.
Born May 20, 1929, in Peoria to Cecil and Pearl Whison Sturgis,
she married Albert E. Newell on Nov. 29, 1949, in Peoria. He died Aug.
9, 1981.
Three brothers and one grandson also preceded her in death.
Surviving are three daughters, Gail Newell of Canton, Barbara
Ashwood of Waynesville, Mo., and Karen Bakke of Lakeville, Minn.; two
brothers, Harry Sturgis of Peoria and Harold Sturgis of Chicago; and
three grandchildren.
She was a caregiver for eight years for her grandson who had a terminal illness.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Greenwood
Cemetery. The Rev. Delmar Smith will officiate. Visitation will be from
12:45 to 1:45 p.m. Monday at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home.

Monmouth - Corene H. Oaks, 85, of 8 Doctors Lane, Macomb,
formerly of Monmouth, died at 6:33 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 1995, at
McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.
Born April 20, 1910, in Camden to Ross and Jessie Campbell
Hawkins, she married Seth E. Oaks on June 25, 1938, in Burlington,
Iowa. He died April 15, 1971.
One brother and four sisters also preceded her in death.
Surviving are one sister, Darlene Fetch of Macomb, and several nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Monmouth Hospital School of Nursing, she was a
registered nurse at Monmouth Hospital for many years. She later was
head tuberculosis nurse at the San Francisco Sanitarium in San
Francisco.
She was a member of Nurse's Alumni Association in Monmouth.
She was of the Christian faith.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Warren County
Memorial Park Cemetery in Monmouth. The Rev. James Stovall will
officiate. There will be no visitation. Turnbull Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.

Delvan - Constance C. Painter, 84, of 705 Elm St. died at 10:45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 1992, at her residence.
Born Oct. 5, 1907, in Schuyler County to Phillip Norman and
Nellie Shaw Crable, she married Russell Painter on April 24, 1927. He
died Feb. 22, 1974.
Two sons, Larry and Jackie, and two sisters also preceded her in death.
Surviving are three daughters, Ramona Gorsage of Springfield,
Norma Merano of Kincaid and Sharon Lindsey of Delavan; one sister, Mary
Clayton of Astoria; 17 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
She was a member of Delavan United Methodist Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Sheldon Grove United
Methodist Church. The Revs. Terry Westerfield and James Poe will
officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church.
Burial will be in Sheldon Grove Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial Home in
Astoria is in charge of arrangements.

Morton - Floyd O. Parry, 91, of 730 W. Jefferson St., formerly
of East Peoria and Sunnyland, died at 12:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2000,
at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.
Born Jan. 23, 1908, in Astoria to Stephen and Cora Mae Danner
Parry, he married Anna Allen Harton on Aug. 12, 1988, in East Peoria.
She died Nov. 26, 1999.
He also was preceded by one infant son, one stepdaughter, one brother and one sister.
Surviving are two sons, Harold (and Sharon) of Peoria and Ralph
(and Carol) of Washington; two daughters, Rosalie (and Barney) Grisham
and Bonnie (and Dean) Cunningham, both of East Peoria; two sisters,
Bette Olson of Manito and Mildred Lannery of Ipava; three stepsons;
three stepdaughters; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He worked at Caterpillar Inc. for 35 years, retiring in 1971 from the research department at the Mossville plant.
He was a union steward for many years with the United Farm
Equipment and Metal Workers of America and also United Auto Workers
Local 974 in East Peoria. He was a member of the Caterpillar Retirees
Club and UAW Local 974 Retirees.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Knapp-Johnson Funeral
Home. The Rev. Tim Wiley will officiate. Visitation will be from 3 to 5
p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roberts Cemetery.

Rushville - Russell P. Payne, 80, of 425 S. Congress died at
12:50 a.m. Friday, May 29, 1992, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital.
Born April 5, 1912, in Huntsville Township, Schuyler County, to
Perry E. and Maude E. Black Payne, he married Geraldine Hayes on June
9, 1934, in Rushville. She survives along with one son, Gene Payne of
Arlington, Texas; one sister, Erma Schieferdecker of Rushville; and
three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
He was a farmer, retiring in January 1969.
Funeral services will
be at 10 a.m. Monday at Worthington Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert
Kirkham will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at
the funeral home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Augusta.

Beardstown - Beulah Haberman Perdue, 87, of Beardstown died at
9:15 p.m. Friday, April 17, 1992, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
Born July 5, 1904, in Browning to William T. and Maggie Skiles
Allumbaugh, she married Charles Haberman in November 1925 in Virginia,
Ill. He died in March 1960. She later married Jesse Perdue in October
1977 in Beardstown. He died in June 1984.
She also was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
She is survived by three sons, Alan Haberman of rural
Arenzville, Roger Kent Haberman of Beardstown and William Haberman of
Georgetown, Texas; one daughter, Norma Haberman of Beardstown; one
stepson, Gerald Perdue of Occoquan, Va.; one stepdaughter, Charlotte
Gay of Carrollton, Va.; one brother, Norman Allumbaugh of Hemet,
Calif.; 11 grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; one great-
grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, White Shrine
of Jerusalem, Daughters of the American Revolution, Beardstown American
Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post and the Beardstown Senior Citizens.
She was a life member of Bader Christian Church in Bader.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sager Funeral Home in
Beardstown, with Matthew Haberman officiating. Visitation will be from
6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Beardstown
City Cemetery.

11:23 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
Born April 16, 1930, in Blandinsville to Millard F. and Hazel L.
Petrie Litchfield, she married Thomas L. Perry on Feb. 16, 1965, in
Galesburg. He died Jan. 7, 1986.
She also was preceded in death by two grandchildren.
Surviving are two sons, Herman (and Joyce) Darby of Galesburg
and Eddie (and Jill) Perry of Alexis; two daughters, Mrs. Charles
(Sharon) Whittier of Morton and Mrs. John (Thomasa) Eskridge of
Galesburg; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Daniel (Vicki) Hare of Centennial,
Colo., and Mrs. Bill (Valerie) Henning of Abingdon; 13 grandchildren;
and seven great-grandchildren.
An employee of the state of Illinois for 36 years, she worked at
Galesburg Research Hospital until it closed in 1984. She later was the
dietary supervisor at Zeller Mental Health Center in Peoria until
retiring on Dec. 1, 1995.
She was a member of the Abingdon Pottery Club.
She and her husband organized flea markets in the Galesburg area for many years.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, where services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Elder Bob
Chandlee will officiate. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 tonight at
Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood
Cemetery.

Sammy and Helen McClelland Phillips, he married Mary Lou Paisley on
June 20, 1953, in Rushville. She survives.
Also surviving are his mother of Rushville; one son, Steve (and
Diana Patch) of Kalispell, Mont.; one daughter, Gina (and Mark) Priewe
of Lanark; two brothers, Marvin (and Ruth) and Donald (and Karen), both
of Rushville; two sisters, Karen Trone of Edwardsville and Joyce (and
Dennis) Heitz of Rushville.
He was preceded in death by his father.
He served in the Army from February 1953 to February 1955, and was a Korean War veteran.
He was a lifelong farmer.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Rushville.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Worthington Funeral
Home. The Rev. Paul Arnold will officiate. Friends may call the family

1935, in Oquawka.
She survives along with two sons, Robert and Terry, both of
Rushville; five daughters, Shirley Baker of Bullshead, Ariz., Norma
Jones of Severna Park, Md., Sara Conlin of Astoria, Rose Mary Root of
Pawnee, and Lynne Kokenes of Orland Park; two brothers, Woodrow and
Cecil, both of Macomb; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
He was a farmer and construction worker, retiring in 1963. He was a member of Curry Chapel Church near Rushville.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Worthington Funeral Home in

from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hughes

Phillips, he married Evelyn Norris on Oct. 16, 1941, in Kahoka, Mo. She
survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Dinah Lee Burton of Alpha;
three sons, Dennis Lyndall Phillips and Daryl Lane Phillips, both of
Macomb and Dannie Lewis Phillips of Columbia, Mo.; one brother, Cecil
D. of Macomb; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Three
brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
He owned and operated Phillip's Electric in Macomb for 41 years,
retiring in 1990. A World War II Navy veteran, he was a member of
Disabled American Veterans.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dodsworth-Piper- Wallen
Funeral Home in Macomb. The Rev. Ron Derrig-Green will officiate.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral

Phillips, he married Myrna Curless on Dec. 25, 1948, in Astoria. She
survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Nancy Carithers of Astoria and
Nicki Hazzard of Lewistown; five grandchildren; one step granddaughter;
one great-granddaughter; three step great-granddaughters; two brothers,
Arthur of Eureka and Burtton of East Moline; and three sisters, Zoe Ann
Humphrey of Rushville, Bernice Parr of Bradley and Neda Colston of
Fenton, Mo. He was preceded in death by one grandson.
He worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation for 21
years, retiring Dec. 31, 1991. A bus driver for Astoria Community
School District for 10 years, he was a substitute driver at the time of
his death. He also was a self-employed farmer and carpenter.
A World War II Navy veteran, he was a member of Astoria American Legion Post 25.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Shawgo Memorial Home in
Astoria. Collis Trone and Gary Sheets will officiate. Visitation will
be from 6 to 8 tonight at the memorial home. Burial will be Astoria

She was a former volunteer for the American Red Cross and was a member of Rebekah Lodge 245.

near Mindale. The Rev. Marvin Chockley will officiate. There will be no
visitation. Roby Funeral Chapel in Rushville is in charge of

the late James and Lena Winner Briney. She married F. Harold Ratliff in
1933 in Havana, and he died in 1988.
She also was preceded in death by three sisters, a grandson and a stepgrandson.
Mrs. Ratliff was a member of the Ashland United Methodist Church and a former member of the Ashland Eastern Star.

survives.

A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of Ipava American

AF&AM. He was a member of Ipava Christian Church, where services
will be at 11 a.m. Friday. The Revs. Kevin Kessler and Stacey Nicholas
will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Shawgo
Memorial Home in Ipava, with Masonic services at 8 p.m. Burial will be
in Ipava Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by his
American Legion Post.

Galesburg - A. Adeline Robeson, 111, of Galesburg died at 9:10
p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1992, at Marigold Health Care Center.
Born Sept. 20, 1880, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Jeremiah and
Francelia Shear Martin, she married James Robeson on Sept. 20, 1904. He
died July 28, 1971. She also was preceded in death by six brothers and
three sisters.
Surviving are three sons, Orville of Roseville, Glen of Macomb
and Dr. Wayne of Dearborn, Mich.; one daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Solomon of
Marquette Heights; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 13
great-great-grandchildren.
In 1882, her family moved to Schuyler County, and in 1891 she
moved to south of Macomb. She had lived in Galesburg since 1945. She
was a 98-year member of Ebenezer Church in rural Macomb and was founder
of the social services of the church. She was a member of the Galesburg
Art League.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Corman Memorial Home in
Roseville. The Rev. Kermit Peterson will officiate. Visitation will be
from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the memorial home. Burial will be in Oakwood
Cemetery in Macomb.

Donegan of Dickson, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and 13
great-grandchildren. One infant daughter, three brothers, and two
sisters preceded her in death.
She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church of Beardstown, where she taught Sunday school for 42 years.

Born February 3, 1918, in Schuyler County, the son of Harry and
Ona (Trone) Rose, he married Nola Carlete Seward, Sept. 7, 1940, in
Palmyra, Mo. She survives.
Other survivors include one son, Carmen (Barbara) Rose, Macomb;
one daughter, Carolyn (Don) Watson, Astoria; five grandchildren; and 14
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Janell, and
Marcella Watson; and two sisters, Velna Maxine Rose, and Jeanette
Seward.
He worked as a mechanic for Lock Motor Company, Astoria for 13
years. He then started his own business, Curly's Auto Repair and owned
and operated it for 51 years. He always said he was lucky that his job
and his hobby were the same. He trained over 15 mechanics in Astoria
through their employment at Curly's.
He was a member of Astoria Christian Church where he served as an Elder
for 53 years, taught Sunday School and received the Father of the Year
award in 1984. He was recognized as an Honored Elder, in December
2003. He was also recognized as an Honored Citizen by the Village
of Astoria at the Astoria Homecoming celebration in 1988.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Astoria
Christian Church, Revs. Gary Sheets and Ben Peterman officiating.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Burial
was in Astoria Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial home, Astoria, was in
charge of arrangements.

Beardstown, and Max E. Seward, Astoria.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in
death by two sisters, Wandalee Mae Seward and Patsy Seward, one
brother, Donald Seward, and two granddaughters, Janell Kay and Marcella
Jean Watson.
She and her husband owned and operated Curly's Auto Repair in
Astoria for 51 years. She was also den mother for the Astoria Cub
Scouts, homemaker, mother, and friend to all.
She was a member of the Astoria Christian Church, where she
taught Sunday School, Women's Bible classes, Home weekly Bible classes,
and was Missionary Secretary.
Funeral Services were held Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at the Astoria
Christian Church, Astoria, with the Revs. Gary Sheets and Ben Peterman
officiating.
Burial was in Astoria Cemetery.

Lancaster Royer, he married Ada R. Troehmel on Aug. 7, 1924, in
Astoria. She died Aug. 3, 1978.
One grandchild and one sister also preceded him in death.
Surviving are one son, Warren of Gainesville, Fla.; one
daughter, Mary Alice Royer of Athens, Ga.; three grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
A member of the Schuyler Farm Bureau for more than 60 years, he
was a farmer in Schuyler County all his life. He was active in
soil-conservation movements and federal programs to improve farm
economy in the 1930s. He also was one of the early practitioners of
contour farming in the west-central part of Illinois.
He was a member of Bader Christian Church in Bader, where he
served as deacon and elder for more than 50 years, and he also taught
Sunday school.
He was a well-known artist and painter of early 20th-century
farm scenes. A retrospective of his work was conducted in Rushville in
1989.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at his church. The Rev.
James Shirley will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m.
Tuesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Burial will be in Bader
Cemetery in Bader.

Born July 22, 1905, in Fulton County to Hugh and Susie Farwell
Curless, she married Clarence McKinley in 1922. She married Harve S.
Ruth on Jan. 17, 1934, in Canton. He died July 13, 1975.
Also preceding her in death were two brothers, one sister and two step-grandsons.
Surviving are one daughter, Betty (Robert) Rhoades of Dekalb;
three stepdaughters, Wanda Fouts of Metamora, Betty Brown of
Chillicothe and Maxine (Herman) Smith of Alta Loma, Calif.; two
brothers, John Curless of Astoria and Ted Curless of Pekin; five
sisters, Opal Schisler and Myrna Phillips, both of Astoria, Edith Lee
and Doris Robertson, both of Peoria, and Olive Howe of Havana; one
grandson; five stepgrandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was a clerk at Montgomery Ward and Bimrose Furniture, a
cashier at Lehan Drugs and was co-owner of the Personality Shop, all in
DeKalb.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Shawgo Memorial Home.
The Rev. Collis Trone will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8
p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Astoria Cemetery.

Cuba - Herbert LeRoy Rutledge, 74, of Wayne County, Mo.,
formerly of the Cuba area, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at his
residence.
Born April 26, 1925, in Fulton County to Curry Nelson and Blanch
Tilman Rutledge, he married Minerva Rae Morgan. She died Jan. 14, 1999.
Surviving are one sister, Melba Ashwood of Canton; and two
sisters-in-law who took care of him, Flossie Doyle and Wilma Scalf,
both of Poplar Bluff, Mo.
He was a World War II Army veteran.
He was a self-employed welder before retiring.
He was of the Protestant faith.
Cremation was accorded. A memorial service and burial of ashes
will be in Cuba at a later date. Cotrell Funeral Service in Poplar
Bluff is in charge of arrangements.

She worked in retail at J. C. Penney Co. Inc. for many years.
She also was a cook at Germantown Hills Grade School for several years.
She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Washington and
its Retirees Club. She also was a member of WABCO Retirees Club.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at her church. The Rev. David

Mason Funeral Home in Metamora and one hour before services at the

Charles F. "Shot" Schisler, 73, Galesburg, died at 12:35 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006, at his home.
He was born Oct. 17, 1932, in Roseville, the son of Pearl and
Mary Kathryn (Emig) Schisler. He married Sarah L. Coffman July 27,
1961. She survives.
He is also survived by one son, Kenneth Pierson, Pekin; three
daughters, Deanna Ralston, Galesburg, Peggy Mettler, Phoenix, and
Michelle Wright, Monmouth; three brothers, Lewis (Catherine) Schisler,
Monmouth, Donald (Thelma) Schisler, Roseville, and Gerald (Rita)
Schisler, Florida; three sisters, Dorothy Griffin, Rock Island, Betty
(Robert) Clark, Phoenix, and Jo Johnson, Monmouth; nine grandchildren;
and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
He lived in Swan Creek, Roseville, Monmouth and Galesburg.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1951 to 1953.
He worked with his brother cutting wood at Admiral until 1959,
at Sturdelite, at Farrs DX Gas Station. In 1963, he returned to
Admiral/Maytag, retiring in 1994. He also worked seven years at Harry
Rhadmacher's Plumbing.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, in
Roseville Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Gary Judy officiating.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donors choice.

He was preceded in death by one son, Delbert Devere Schisler, and two brothers.
A farmer in the Good Hope area for 40 years, he was also a
self-employed carpenter. He was a former member of the Good Hope Lions
Club and a member of the Walnut Grove Methodist Church.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at his church. The Rev.
Peggy Richards will officiate. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m.

Surviving are her father of rural Vermont; her mother of Bader;
two sisters, Billie Jo Burnett of Rushville and Jamie Shanks of
Astoria; one brother, Brandon of Vermont; grandparents, Arthur and
Wilma Herink of Vermont, and Ernest and Jeannine Shanks of Astoria; and
great-grandparents, Everett McWhorter of Canton and Ivan Shanks of
Astoria.
She was entering her junior year at Vermont-Industry-Table Grove
High School, where she was a member of the science club, played
basketball, and was a cheerleader and a member of the flag squad.
She was a recipient of the National English Merit Award. She was
nominated to be a national scholar representing Illinois at the
National Young Leaders Conference and was a member of the National
Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. She worked at Kentucky Fried
Chicken in Macomb.
She was a member of Vermont United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school.

Mr. Shanks of Vermont was pronounced dead at 12:31 a.m. Sunday,
Sept. 24, 2000, at the scene, after being electrocuted by a downed

The son of Ernest and Jeannine Powell Shanks, he was born Nov. 18, 1951 in Macomb.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, and one great granddaughter.

He lived in Brooklyn Township for many years, moving to Astoria in 1970.
He was a farmer and a coal miner and also owned and operated a saw mill.

Burial was in the Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Macomb, Illinois.

brothers, Charles E. Grandt and Jim L. Grandt and two sisters, Eleanor
D. Icenogle and Marjorie Lea Stromberg.
Thelma's childhood homes were in the areas of Table Grove,
Ipava, Gin Ridge, Plymouth and Macomb. Following her marriage she lived
on the Siepel Family Farm south of Joetta until June 2001 when she
moved to LaMoine Christian Nursing Home in Roseville. She moved to
Wesley Village Health Care in Macomb in September 2001. She was a 1933
graduate of Macomb High School. She worked in her father’s business,
Farmer's Produce in the Lindsey Building in Macomb, and later was
employed at Dennis chicken Products in Augusta, in the dietary
department at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, and as a crop reporter
with the US Department of Agriculture. She was a co-leader of the
Lamoine Lucky Ladies 4-H club in Hancock County for several years, and
had been a member of Home Bureau and the Crooked Creek Special Club.
She enjoyed her yard, especially hybrid tea roses, daffodils and red
bud trees. Known lovingly as "Granny Siepel" to her grandchildren and
many friends, neighbors, and family members, She will be remembered by
them for her gifts of quilts and hand-crocheted afghans and for the
time and love she shared with each of them. She also created elaborate
gingerbread houses for her beloved "Gray Boys" when they were children.
She enjoyed reading and travel, and was a member of the Tennessee
Birthday Club. She was an active member of the Hills Grove United
Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible school and
was active in the United Methodist Women. She was also co-founder and
member of Church Women United of the Colchester area.
Funeral Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2002 at
the Hills Grove United Methodist Church near Tennessee with the Rev.
Donald Long officiating. Burial was in the Hills Grove Cemetery.

Frederick - Jacob Thomas "Jake" Smedly, 54, of Rural Route 1
died at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, 1991, at St. John's Hospital in
Springfield.
Born Dec. 3, 1936, in Schuyler County to William A. and Edna
Loring Smedly, he married Velma White on Nov. 17, 1972, in Beardstown.
She survives along with his mother of Rushville; two stepsons,
Stephen D. Browning of Brookfield, Mo., and Roger L. Mallicoat II of
Beardstown; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Wesley (Deborah) Young and Mrs.
Donald (Leah) Malone, both of Beardstown; two brothers, Larry and John,
both of Frederick; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and a stepdaughter, Susan D. Browning.
He was a construction laborer and a farmer.
He served in the Army from 1960 to 1962. Services will be at 2
p.m. Wednesday at Roby Funeral Chapel, Rushville, the Rev. Louis H.
Houchins officiating. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at the
chapel, with military rites conducted at 8 by Schuyler County American
Legion Post 4. Burial will be in Gillette Cemetery, Schuyler County.

Beardstown - Annabelle A. Smith, 76, of Beardstown died Monday,
Jan. 12, 2004, at Heritage Manor East Nursing Home in Beardstown.
She was born Feb. 18, 1927, in Hagener Township, the daughter of
Roy E. and Alice Emerick Baldwin. She married Herb Icenogle in 1946; he
preceded her in death. She married George Cromwell in 1949; he preceded
her in death. She married Charles "Orville" Smith in 1956; he preceded
her in death.
Two daughters, Janet Icenogle and Amelia Cope, also preceded her in death.
Survivors: a son, Randall Cromwell of Beardstown; a daughter,
Alice (husband, Robert) Brown of Hillsdale; 11 grandchildren; 16
great-grandchildren; seven brothers, Leo Baldwin of Jacksonville,
Robert Baldwin of El Cajon, Calif., Kenneth Baldwin of Clayton,
William, Richard and Kenneth Asbury, all of Green Forest, Ark., and
John Honeycutt of Rogers, Ark.; four sisters, Iva Lee Simpson and Ethel
Gardner, both of Green Forest, Wanda Irvin of Hillsboro and Shirley
Schinnebarger of Walnut Shade, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services: 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Beardstown's Church of the Nazarene. Burial: Beardstown City Cemetery.

Bushnell - Graveside services for George Robert "Bob" Smith, 71,
of 1500 W. Main, Apt. 12-A, who died at 10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, 1995,
at Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, will be at 1:30 p.m.
Thursday at Vermont Cemetery in Vermont. The Rev. Ralph O. Swarthout
will officiate.
He was struck by a car Monday while riding a bicycle about four
miles north of Bushnell on Illinois Route 41. There will be no
visitation. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria is in charge of
arrangements.
Born March 3, 1924, in Macomb to Loren W. and Mary E. Carnes
Smith, he married Edna Fowler on Dec. 11, 1980, in Macomb. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Teresa Smith of Moline; one
stepson, Robert Cassel of Bader; two grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; five brothers, Locie and Samuel, both of Bushnell,
James of Sunrise Beach, Mo., Wilbert of Chillicothe and Orville of
Florida; and three sisters, Mildred Still of Havana, Mary Robertson of
Browning and Arlene Willis of the state of Tennessee. He was preceded
in death by one daughter, Shirley Jane Smith, and one sister.
A construction worker, he was a member of Laborer's Union Local 231 in Pekin.
He was a member of Bushnell Christian Church.

Marie Z. Smith, 96, of 734 North Avenue B, Canton, died Sunday (January 15, 2006) at Clayberg Nursing Home in Cuba.
Born August 28, 1909, in Ellisville, the daughter of Edward and
Myrtle (Keller) Schisler, she married Clyde Smith on July 5, 1932, in
Galesburg. He preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Dewayne
Smith; one infant daughter, Laura Smith; one brother; and one sister.
Survivors include one son, Lyle Smith of Canton; six
grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren;
and two sisters, Erma Levine of Galesburg and Lonetta Brannan of
Monmouth.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Canton, where she held various offices.
She was a homemaker.
Services were held at 11 a.m., January 19, at Oaks-Hines Funeral
Home in Canton, with President Calvin MacKay officiating. Visitation
was one hour prior to services, January 19, at the funeral home. Burial
was at Abingdon Cemetery.

Pery, N.Y. - Wayne "Chuck" Snyder, 93, of Peru, formerly of
Alvin and Browning, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at CVPH Medical Center
in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
He was born July 7, 1908, in Browning, the son of George C. and Laura Steadman Snyder.
Mr. Snyder worked for the Burlington Railroad and post office
until he left for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a U.S. Army
veteran of World War II, serving as a warehouse foreman under Gen.
George C. Patton from 1942-45. He was awarded the American Campaign
Medal for Good Conduct, WWII Victory Medal, European/African/Middle
Eastern medal with three bronze battle stars, a service stripe and two
overseas service bars. He was a lifelong gardener and handyman in
Springfield and Alvin, retiring in the 1980s, and a member of Alvin
Christian Church.
Survivors: a stepsister, Marcella Brodman of Virginia; two
nieces, Jean Snyder-Kull of Peru and Patricia Tegeder of Jacksonville;
and three stepnieces, Virginia Stambaugh of Browning, Rosy Aten of
Macomb and Joyce Taylor of Jacksonville.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Browning Cemetery, the Rev. Jack Christian officiating.
Note: Virginia Stambaugh and Rosy Aten are the daughters
of Howard "Keith" Keith Aten and Helen Rose Geer. Jean
Snyder-Kull is the daughter of brother, John Snyder and Eva Darlene
Ridings. Marcella Brodman is the daughter of Arthur "Hiram" Hiram
Geer and Ada Bertha Kloker and sister to Helen Rose Geer Aten.

Havana - Loren "Jack" Sours, 92, of 323 E. Jefferson St. died at
6:20 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, 1994, at Havana Healthcare Center.
Born Nov. 24, 1901, in Beardstown to William Michael and
Margaret Ellen Doyle Sours, he married Helen Bly on April 4, 1932, in
Macomb. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Barbara Buchanan of Havana; two
sons, Jack Sowers of North Branch, Minn., and Dan Sours of Phoenix; two
brothers, Virgle {Virgil} of Rushville and Oliver of Macomb; three
sisters, Winifred Sweeney, Gladys Clark and Margurite Morris, all of
Macomb; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Two sisters
and two brothers preceded him in death.
He was an auctioneer, grocery store owner, contractor and
businessman. He last owned and operated Sours' Furniture store in
Havana.
He was a member of Havana Church of Christ.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hurley Funeral Home. The
Rev. Warren Hughes will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8
tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Rushville - Richard A. Sours, 71, of Rushville, formerly of the
Brooklyn area, died at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at Culbertson
Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 9, 1928, in Davenport, Iowa, to Virgil W. and Velma V.
Perry Sours, he married Patricia A. Lee on Sept. 23, 1950. She died
June 24, 1982.
Two brothers also preceded him in death.
Surviving are one son, Allen (and Helen) of Browning; one
daughter, Brenda (and Larry) Stambaugh of Astoria; one brother, John of
rural Mount Sterling; three grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He worked for the Illinois Department of Conservation for 11
years. He then worked for Sinnock Construction and later owned and
operated Sours Construction until retiring.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Rushville.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Worthington Funeral
Home, where visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight. The Rev. Scott
Henley will officiate. Burial will be in Brooklyn Cemetery.

Rushville - Virgil William Sours, 98, of Rushville died at 12:30
a.m. Sunday, March 16, 1997, at Snyder's Vaughn-Haven Nursing Home.
Born May 22, 1898, in Chandlerville to William and Margaret
Doyle Sours, he married Velma Perry on April 30, 1923, in Rushville.
She died Dec. 25, 1983.
Two sons, James and Robert, three sisters and three brothers also preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sons, Richard and John, both of Littleton; two
sisters, Winnifred Sweeney and Marguerite Morris, both of Macomb; one
brother, Oliver of Moline; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren;
and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was an independent cement contractor and a farmer before retiring.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Worthington Funeral Home.
The Rev. Don Long will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8
tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Blackburn Cemetery near
Brooklyn.

Born Aug. 22, 1896, in Rushville Township, Schuyler County, to
Berchard and Jennett Billingsley Simpson, she married Newton Ray Sowers
Sr. on Oct. 15, 1921, in Lewistown. He died Feb. 15, 1929.
One son, Newton Ray Jr., one daughter, Della Closen, one brother and two sisters also preceded her in death.
Surviving are one daughter, Irene Schisler of Roseville; six
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nine
great-great-grandchildren.
She worked in food service at Hills Nursing Home in Rushville.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Rushville City
Cemetery. The Rev. Bob Key will officiate. Calling hours will be after
3 p.m. today at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville.

Haffner Bates, she married Fred L. Spillers on March 26, 1926. He died

Surviving are one son, Fred of Beardstown; one daughter, Mrs.
Charles (Winifred) Douglas of Quincy; one brother, Charles L. Bates,

She worked at Illinois Glove Factory in Beardstown. She was a
housemother at Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Children's Home in Normal
for 11 years.
She was a member of Browning Methodist Church in Browning, where
services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. William Hesseldenz will
officiate. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Cline Funeral
Home in Beardstown. Burial will be in Browning Cemetery.
