Obituary of Peter Kistler
died: April 11, 1909
Rushville Times, April 1909
Death of Peter Kistler
Aged Citizen After a Lingering Illness Died Sunday at Home of His Daughter, Mrs. Wm. Stremmel
Peter Kistler, an aged and well known citizen of Rushville, died Sunday evening at 5:10 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Stremmel.  Deceased had been in ill health the past year suffering from a cancer and his death was not unexpected.
Short funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the home of Wm. Stremmel, conducted by Rev. A. P. Stover and Rev. C. S. Smith.  The body was taken to Galesburg Tuesday noon for interment, accompanied by the following relatives: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Stremmel and son Orlen, William Kistler, George Miller and George Peacock.
Peter Kistler was born the 12th day of February 1825, in Lauingen, Bavaria, Germany, where he spent his early days.  He was a soldier in the army, taking part in the Hungarian war.  He loved to relate his experiences telling how he and two comrades were caught as spies, imprisoned and sentenced to be shot.  As they were being taken to the scene of the execution they were confronted by a general.  The convicted men fell on their knees, supplementing God to deliver them from their awful death.  this act touched the heart of the general who granted their pardon, thus showing the wonderful power of God when put to the test.
The decease came to America in 1852 and settled in Dubuque, Iowa.  On Nov. 1, 1854, he was united in marriage to Wilhelmina Braenline, of Bavaria, Germany, and soon after became a resident of Galesburg, being one of the early settlers.
For about forty years Mr. Kistler has been a consistent member of the M. E. church.  He was a mechanic in the Brown Glow? shops for many years, always faithful and energetic, living up to what he considered the highest principle, - honesty.
Two daughters and three sons were added to the home, Mrs. Anna Luikart, of Norfolk, Neb., who preceded her father to the world beyond exactly one year to the day; B. F. and John Kistler, of Galesburg, and Mrs. Sophia Stremmel and W. G. Kistler, of Rushville.
In 1904 Mr. and Mrs. Kistler celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a host of relatives and friends, both apparently in good health and enjoying themselves.  On Sept. 29, 1906, Mrs. Kistler died suddenly breaking up the home and leaving her husband to spend his last days in loneliness.  Since that time he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Stremmel in Rushville, who has spared neither time nor effort in making his declining days pleasant and homelike.
About a year ago he was operated on for cancer which soon reappeared causing his death.  For the past four months he has been confined to his bed, demanding constant attention day and night.  During this time he has endured intense suffering always bearing it with fortitude and courage, ever ready and waiting, often wishing that he might be taken to meet his beloved wife and his Maker.
The end came very peacefully on Easter Sunday at 5:10 p. m. with a call from the risen Lord, "Well done good and faithful servant."

He {Her} death came as a severe shock to her family and friends.  No one was in the house at the time she was taken with the attack but she was found a few minutes later, lying on the floor, by her son, John Kistler, who came into the house.  Her husband was in the yard at the time and was grief stricken when he learned of her condition.  Dr. Morris {?} was immediately summoned but by the time he arrived she was dead.  Mrs. Kistler has been suffering with spells of her heart for some time but otherwise she had been in good health for one of her age.
Mrs. Kistler was a native of Munich, Germany.  She was born February 12, 1829.  When twenty-four years of age she came to this country and fifty-two years ago was united in marriage with Peter Kistler, at Dubuque, Iowa.  A few years later they came to Galesburg, which has since been their home.  Two years ago this coming November they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in this city, at which time several of their children and immediate relatives were present from away.  Mrs. Kistler was a member of the First Methodist church and was highly respected by all who knew her.
To mourn her death she is survived by her husband and the following children, Mrs. Annie Luikart, of Norfolk, Nebraska; B. F. Kistler and John Kistler of this city and Mrs. Sophia Stremmell, of Rushville besides numerous other relatives and friends.
The time of the funeral services will be announced later.

Obituary of Elizabeth Mary Schramm Stremmel
died:  November 21, 1899
a Rushville newspaper, November 1899
written on the obit: Nov. 21, 1899 and Nov. 23, 1899 service.
Mrs. Elizabeth Stremmel
The death of Mrs. Elizabeth Stremmel, which occurred in this city yesterday morning at 11:45, was the peaceful ending of a long Christian life.
Elizabeth Schramm was born April 14, 1833, in Dillonberg, Germany.  In 1855 she came to the United State with quite a number of acquaintances who sought their fortune in this country, several of whom located near Rushville, and they and their descendants have proven to be some of Schuyler's most substantial citizens.  In 1857 Miss Schramm was united in marriage with George Stremmel, and they commenced housekeeping in Woodstock township.  There they reared a family of seven children - one son and six daughters, namely: William, now of the firm of Hammond & Stremmel of this city; Lena, deceased wife of Philip Naught; Mrs. Lon Glandon of Curtis, Neb.; Mrs. Minnie Naight, and Mrs. Margaret Paisley and Mrs. Eliza Aten, all of Woodstock township, and Mrs. Mary Kuechler of this city.
Mrs. Stremmel leaves three brothers - Wm. Schramm of Courtland, Neb.; Fred Schramm of Cladonia, Neb. and Philip Schramm of Woodstock township, and one sister Mrs. Catherine Dossel of White Hall, Ill., the latter being present when she passed away.
From her girlhood days Mrs. Stremmel held church membership and was a christian.  While in her native land she united with the Lutheran church, and soon after coming to America she became a member of the German M. E. church near her home, five miles southwest of this city.  For many years that church was an appointment for a regular pastor, and Mrs. Stremmel was among its most regular attendants.  She not only enjoyed the service of the Divine Master, but she reflected His light by her every day walk in life.
About fifteen years ago Mr. and Mrs. Stremmel and their three daughters moved to Rushville, occupying the residence on North Liberty street.  Mr. Stremmel died in January, 1885.  Here Mrs. Stremmel passed her declining years, though up to within two years ago her health had been excellent.  About two years ago she began to fail, and a fortnight ago her condition became alarming.  Last Saturday it was discernible that the end was not far off and her children were summoned.  Yesterday morning, realizing that her Master would soon summon her, she called all her children to her bedside and bid them good bye, telling them she was not only ready but willing to go.  Then she passed away as peacefully as a child goes to slumber and with a smile on her countenance.  As an inheritance to her children she leaves a life of good deeds which is more than great riches.
The funeral services will take place from the First M. E. church, of which deceased has been a member for several years, on Thursdays afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Wm. Brandon.  The interment will take place at Rushville cemetery.
