Death of Rex "Doug" Douglas Trone, Rebecca "Becky" Sue Trone, Paula Ward, and Fred "Freddie" Nelson Stambaugh
died: July 25, 1971
Astoria Argus - In ink July ____, 1971
Teenagers Killed In Rt. 67 Crash
Four teenagers were killed and two persons injured in a
spectacular, flaming three-car crash on Route 67 four miles south of
Rushville at 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
Killed in the accident were Rex Douglas Trone, 15, and Rebecca
Sue Trone, 15, brother and sister, of Rushville; Paula Ward, 14, of
LaPrairie; and Freddie Stambaugh, 16, of Browning.
Roger Skiles, 38, of Beardstown, driver of one of the cars in
the accident was first taken to Culbertson Hospital in Rushville and
then transferred to McDonough District Hospital with severe injuries to
both legs.
Lee Bryant, 42, Lamoine Hotel, Macomb, a passenger in the third
auto, received apparently minor injuries and was not treated.
According to state police, Skiles was driving south on Route 67,
and a small foreign car with the four teenagers in it was traveling
north, followed by an auto driven by Albert G. Kupfer, 49 of 409 N.
Lafayette St., Macomb. Bryant was a passenger in the Kupfer car.
The Skiles 1970 auto apparently went out of control, crossed the
centerline sideways and was struck in the right rear panel by the small
car. Kupfer’s auto then skidded into the rear of the foreign car
and it burst into flames.
Skiles’ auto also caught fire and came to rest in a ditch on the
east side of the highway. The other two cars were in the
northbound lane of traffic.
The victims were trapped in their vehicle. State police
have not determined the driver and the investigation is continuing.
Schuyler County Coroner John Reynolds said an inquest would be conducted later.
Funeral services will be conducted for Fred Nelson Stambaugh at
2 p.m. Wednesday at the Browning Methodist Church by Collis
Trone. Burial will be in Browning Cemetery. A Fred
Stambaugh memorial fund has been established for the Browning Methodist
