Think mine man killed by train
John Groom, Engineer at Richland Pit Found on Illinois Central tracks.

Apparently, the victim of a train, the body of John Groom, 64 year old mine
engineer, was found at 6:45 am today alongside the tracks of the Illinois
Centrla railroad, 3 1/2 miles east of Belleville on the old Freeburg Rd.
Miners going to work at the Richland mine where Gromm was employed adn where
he resided in a company house discovered the body. IT was taken to St
Elizabeth's hospital in Belleville, There physicians described the victim's
injuries as a crushed chest and a fracture of the skull.
Groom, an uncle of Rober Groom, owner of the left his home on the mine's
property at about 8 p.m. Thursday. He told his wife he going to make his
nightly inspection trip around the mine.
When he had not returned at 9 pm Mrs Groom called relatives who later
summoned the authorities. They made a search, bu could not find him.
Relatives at first believed Groom was the victim of transients who attempted
to rob him, recalling that about 2 weeks ago 2 men threatened to assult him
while he was making a similiar inspection of the mine property. Deputies,
discounted this verdict of the death Friday morning when they found blood
stains on the track and traced the rail of Groom's body.
