GEORGE BIESER DIES
AT FAYETTEVILLE
Former Member of County Board of Supervisors Succumbs After Six Months Illness.
George Bieser, 73, retired butcher and prominent resident of Fayetteville, died at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon
at his home of heart disease. He was ill six months.
Bieser, at the time of his death, was town clerk of Fayetteville township, justice of the peace of Fayetteville,
and president of the Workingmen's Aid Society of Fayetteville. He headed the society, a German body, for 27 years,
25 years in succession and the last two years.
He formerly represented Fayetteville township on the St. Clair county board of supervisors, being a supervisor
for 12 years. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias of Fayetteville, and the Fayetteville Turn und Lese (Reading)
Verein.
Bieser conducted a meat market at Fayetteville from 1883 to 1929, when he retired. Previously he worked for his
late father, Adam Bieser, also a butcher at Fayetteville.
Bieser was born Nov. 15, 1857, at St. Louis, a son of the late Adam and Celestina Bieser, who moved to Fayetteville
when Bieser was a boy. He married Elizabeth Koester at Fayetteville, May 1, 1883.
He is survived by his widow and five children: Amanda, wife of Albert Sauerwein of Belleville; Amelia, wife of
Henry Petri, of Fayetteville township; Cora, wife of Albert Gansmann, of Belleville; Lydia, wife of Nicholas Gansmann,
of Belleville, and Edwin Bieser, of Mascoutah. Four other children died in infancy. He is also survived 11 grandchildren,
and the following four brothers and two sisters: Adolph Bieser, of Mascoutah; Joseph, of Belleville; Frank, of
Los Angeles, Calif.; Jacob, of Cillinsville; Mrs. Jacob Ohl, and Mrs. Emma Schmitzmeier, both of Mascoutah.
The funeral will be held at two o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Bieser home with interment in the Fayetteville
Evangelical cemetery. Rev. J. H. Koenig, pastor of Fayetteville Evangelical church, will officiate. ©Sandy

John Main, 66, of New Athens died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Belleville.
He was a retired barber.
Surviving are his wife, the former Velma Coates; four sons, John A., of Freeburg, Victor Lorraine and Robert Lee,
New Athens; and Russell Keith, Shepard Air Force Base, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Norman (Betty Ann) Schwebel,
and Mrs. Burke (Ellen) Potter, of Belleville; a brother, James Calvin, of Colorado Springs, Col.; four sisters,
Mrs. Elva Belovich, Mrs. Ila May Heart, and Mrs. Martha Bibbo, of New Canton, ILL., and Louise Vaughn, Pleasant
Hill, Ill.; 13 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Jan. 11 at the Hull Funeral Home, New Athens. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

WALLS COLLAPSE
LOUIS LURRELL MAIN
SUFFOCATED AS HE BUILDS SEWER
Louis Lurrell Main, 28 year old Freeburg barber, was suffocated yesterday afternoon when the walls of a nine-inch
cut for a sewer collapsed while he was lying a four-inch sanitary sewer in the excavation.
Main, who lived in a trailer at --6 South Alton Street, Freeburg, near his barbershop, was buried under tons of
dirt and it took rescuers eight minutes to remove him from the excavation.
Artificial respiration was applied at the scene by the Freeburg Disaster Unit and he was taken in a George Renner
and Sons ambulance from Freeburg to St. Elizabeth's Hospital, where he died at 7:40 p.m., about four hours after
the mishap.
Main was building a house on the Alton Street property. Two brothers, John Eldon Main and Robert Lee Main, both
of New Athens, were assisting him in laying the sewer.
Main, who moved from New Athens to Freeburg about a year ago, was a graduate of a barber school in Dacatur. He
was an Army veteran.
Born at New Canton, Ill., June 26, 1933, he was a son of John H. and Velma Main, nee Coates, of New Athens. The
father is a barber. Mr. Main married Elaine Scholes in Smithton October 29, 1955.
Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Ann, 3; four brothers, John E., Victor L.,
Robert L., and Russell K. Main, and two sisters, Betty Ann, wife of Robert Hull and Mary Ellen, wife of Burke Potter,
all of New Athens, and his grandparents, Louis Main, New Canton, and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Coates, Bushnell, Ill.
A sister died in infancy.
Mr. Main was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Freeburg, and the Barbers Union.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, from St. Paul's Church, Freeburg, to Franklin Cemetery, Smithton.
Friends may call at the Hull Funeral Home, New Athens, after 7:30 p.m. Monday and until 11 a.m. Wednesday when

VELMA MAIN
Velma Ellen Main, nee Coates, 66, of New Athens, died Tuesday, Oct., 7 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Main and a son, Louis Main.
She is survived by four sons, Victor and Robert Main both of New Athens, John Main of Freeburg and Russell Main
of Edwards A.F.B. in Lancaster, Ca.; two daughters, Mrs. Norman (Betty Ann) Schwebel and Mrs. Burke (Mary Ellen)
Potter both of Belleville; her mother, Viola, nee Neal, Coates; four brothers, three sisters, 14 grandchildren
and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Hull funeral Home in New Athens. Burial will be in
Oak Ridge Cemetery in New Athens.
Friends may call between 4 and 9 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

AMANDA BIESER DIES
AT AGE OF 75
Mrs. Amanda I. Bieser, 75, of 203 West Poplar Street, died at 2:45 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Hosptial about
five hours after she was stricken at her home.
A daughter of the late George and Christina Karch, nee Lintz, she was born in Mascoutah on April 9, 1893. She married
Edwin J. Bieser in Belleville on Jan. 19, 1917. Mr. Bieser, a butcher, died Nov. 28, 1940.
Surviving are two daughters, Ione, wife of Leroy Klingel and Mrs. Shirley Hecker, both of this city; a brother,
Alvin Karch and a sister, Aurelia, wife of Edgar Kolb, both of Lebanon, and six grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by a sister.
Mrs. Bieser was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, the Women's Guild of the church and the Senior Citizens
Club of Mascoutah.
The funeral was held at 3:30 p.m. Monday from the Moll Funeral Home, to Mascoutah City Cemetery. The Rev. John

Henry F. Schrader, retired farmer of 749 W. "H" St., Belleville, and formerly of Fayetteville, Ill.,
died at his home Monday, May 8, at 2:30 p.m.
Mr. Schrader was born at New Hanover, IL, September 18, 1885 a son of the late Fred and Emma Schrader, nee Emma
Huch. He married Elenora Blumhorst Feb. 23, 1919, at St. Louis, Mo. She survives.
Besides his wife he is survived by the following children, Helen, wife of Elroy Barkau, route 1, Freeburg; Erna,
wife of Maxon Rice, Vacaville, Calif.; Ruth, wife of Robert Petri, 749 W. "H" St., Belleville; Mabel,
wife of alfred Bahr, 1206 Kinsella Ave., Belleville; Albert Schrader, route 2, Mascoutah; Herbert Schrader, route
2, Freeburg, 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The following brothers and sisters: Walter and Fred Schrader,
Amanda and Ann Schrader, all of Okawville; Miss Frieda Schrader of St. Louis, Mo.; Malinda, wife of Elmer Brammeier,
St. Louis, Mo., Ardell, wife of Rev. Harvey Schmidt of Portland, Ore.
Friends may call at the Moll Funeral Home after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday (today). Funeral services will be held Thursday
at 2:00 p.m. from the Moll Funeral Home in Mascoutah, Rev. Edward Fresen of United Church of Christ, Fayetteville,

WILLIAM BLUMHORST
DIES, RETIRED OWNER OF FARM
William Henry Blumhorst, 87-year-old retired farmer died of infirmities of age at 8:30 o'clock Monday morning in
the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Henry and Elenora Schrader, one-fourth mile north of Fayetteville, where
he had made his home. Mr. Blumhorst resided in St. Louis for many years until 1919 when he moved to Fayetteville.
He retired from farming a number of years ago.
He was born atStone Church, Washington county, on April 30, 1859, a son of the late Henry and Mary Blumhorst, nee
Guesterkoetter. He married Christiana Hasenjaeger in St. Louis on October 11, 1891.
Surviving besides his wife and his daughter are a step-brother, John Nolte, Johannesburg, Ill., six grandchildren,
and three great-grandchildren. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
He was a member of the Concordia Aid Society, Branch 1 of St. Louis.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow from the Zion Lutheran church with Rev. R.C. Fessler officiating.

FUNERAL SERVICES HELD MONDAY FOR ADOLPH
H. BIESER
The funeral was held Monday for Adolph H. Bieser, 84-year-old retired carpenter of 120 West George Street. Mr.
Bieser died at 5:45 p.m. Friday at Memorial Hospital. Seriously ill for three weeks, Mr. Bieser entered the hospital
at 3:15 o'clock Friday afternoon.
He was born September 18, 1876 at Fayetteville, a son of the late Adam and Celestine Bieser, nee Richard. He married
the former Hilda Fries in Engelmann Township, September 16, 1906.
Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Adolph J. Bieser, St. Louis; two daughters, Elma, wife of Oscar Friederich,
Chicago, and Florence, wife of Melvin Ebel, San Mateo, Calif., and four grandchildren. six brothers and two sisters
preceded him in death.
Mr. Bieser was a member of the Modern Woodmen.
The funeral was held at 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon from the Clyde Hoercher Funeral Home, Mascoutah, to the Mascoutah

BIESER
Mrs. Hilda C. Bieser, 80, of 120 West George Street, died at 10:10 o'clock Tuesday morning at Memorial Hospital
where she had been a patient for a week following a cerebral hemorrhage.
A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Fries, nee Freivogel, she was born in Engelmann Township on October 6,
1881. She married Adolph H. Bieser at Mascoutah, September 26, 1906. Mr. Bieser, a former carpenter, died January
13, 1961.
Surviving are a son, adolph J. Bieser, St. Louis; two daughters, Elma, wife of Oscar Friederich, Chicago, and Florence,
wife of Melvin Ebel, San Mateo, Calif., a brother, Elvin J. Fries, R.R. 1, Mascoutah, and four grandchildren. Four
brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bieser was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ, Mascoutah, the Women't Guild of the church and the
royal Neighbors of America.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday from the Clyed Hoercher Funeral Home, to the Mascoutah City Cemetery.
The Rev. John C. Riggs, pastor of St. Johns Church, will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home after

AT AGE OF 78
Mrs. Elenora Schrader, 78, of R.R. 1, Freeburg, and formerly of near Fayetteville, died at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday,
December 30, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, where she had been a patient since Saturday.
A daughter of the late William and Christine Blumhorst, nee Hasenjaeger, she was born in St. Louis on August 27,
1892. She married Henry F. Schrader in St. Louis on february 23, 1919. Mr. Schrader, a farmer, died May 5, 1969.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Elroy Barkau, R.R. 1, Freeburg; Mrs. Erna Rice, of Vacaville, California; Mrs.
Robert Petri, Belleville; and Mrs. Alfred Bahr, Swansea; two sons, albert Schrader, R.R. 2 Mascoutah; and Herbert
Schrader, R.R. 2, Freeburg; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Schrader was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Fayetteville and the Women's Guild of the church.
The funeral was held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday from the Moll funeral Home, to Mascoutah City Cemetery. The Rev. Edward

BAMMA HAMPTON DIES AT AGE 85; RITES SATURDAY
Mrs. Bamma Hampton, nee dutton, 85, who had made her home with her granddaughter, Mrs. Edna Schilling, 257 Lebanon
avenue until about two months ago, died at 9 a.m. today at the Mather Nursing Home at Alton. Death was due to an
extended illness.
Mrs. Hampton was a native of Alabama, and was born there May 2, 1865. Her husband, William Hampton, died in 1916
here in Belleville. One daughter, Mrs. Ida Henderson, preceded her in death.
She is survived by three grandchildren, Edna, wife of John Schilling, 257 Lebanon avenue; Irene, wife of Ben Reissen,
140 Kansas avenue, well known local grocer, and Hayes Henderson, 524 Benton street. Two great-grandchildren also
survive.
Funeral services are to be held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Pete Gaerdner funeral home, Rev. Russell Phillips,
pastor of the First Baptist church, officiating. Interment will take place in Valhalla Burial Park.

MRS. IDA HENDERSON, 49, NURSE HERE, DIES; FUNERAL RITES MONDAY
Mrs. Ida Mae Henderson, 49, well known nurse, died at 1 o'clock this afternoon at her home, 410 South Jackson street.
Death was due to an ailment which developed about a year ago.
Mrs. Henderson was a nurse at St. Elizabeth's hospital and also engaged in private practice.
She was born in Tennessee, May 20, 1885, a daughter of William and Bamma (Dutton) Hampton, both of whom were also
born in Tennessee. Her father preceded her in death. Her mother lives at the Henderson home at the South Jackson
street address.
Mrs. Henderson married B.S. Henderson in Tennessee in 1900.
In addition to her mother and husband she is survived by a son and two daughters, Hayes Henderson, at home; Irene,
wife of Ben Reissen, of 1906 North Church street, who operates a grocery on the West Side, and Miss Edna, at home.
The body will lie in state at the Pete Gaerdner funeral home where the final rites will take place at 1:30 Monday

BARNEY HENDERSON DIES; FATHER OF LOCAL RESIDENTS
Funeral services for Barney Scott Henderson, 71, the father of three Belleville residents, were held Sunday at
Coalmont, Tenn.
Mr. Henderson, who lived at Coalmont, died Friday at a Chattanooga hospital after an extended illness. Death was
due to a heart condition.
He was the father of Mrs. Ben Reissen, of 140 Kansas avenue; Mrs. John Schilling, of 257 Lebanon avenue, and Hayes

IRENE REISSEN
Irene Reissen, nee Henderson, 82, of Belleville, died Monday, January 22, 1990, at Four Fountains Convalescent
Center in Belleville.
She and her husband, Ben, were owners of the former Ben Reissen Supermarket, 14th and Main Street, Belleville,
for many years.
She was a member of St. Lune's Catholic Church and the original founder of The Parents Group for Retarded Children.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Barney and Ida, nee Hampton, Henderson; a brother, Hayes Henderson and
a sister, Edna Schilling.
Surviving are her husband, Benjamin (Ben) J. Reissen of Belleville; a brother-in-law and two sisters-in law, Arthur
and Area Reissen of Belleville and Lenore Henderson, of Belleville; a close niece and nephew, Connie (Bill) Broadhurst
and John Schilling, all of Belleville; other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Funeral procession will leave at 9:45 a.m., Thursday, from the George Renner and Sons Funeral Home in Belleville,
to St. Lukes Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. mass with Father Eugene Neff officiating. Burial will be held in Mt.
Carmel Cemetery in Belleville.
Friends may call after 4 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
A Vigal Wake Service will be held at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday at the George Renner and Sons Funeral Home in Belleville.

Edwin J. Bieser, 45 year old butcher of Mascoutah, died at 8 o'clock last night at the Veterans hospital, Jefferson
Barracks, where he had been under treatment for two weeks.
Born at Fayetteville, Feb. 5, 1895, he was a son of George and Elizabeth Koester Bieser. The mother survives, residing
at Fayetteville. The father died in 1931.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Amanda Karch Bieser, whom he married at Belleville, Oct. 9, 1917; two daughters, Jane
and Shirley, at home; and four sisters, Amanda, wife of Albert Sauerwein, Belleville; Mrs. Amelia Petri, Fayetteville;
Clara, wife of Albert Gansmann, and Lydia, wife of Nicholas Gansmann, Belleville.
Bieser was a war veteran and a member of the American Legion, Post 292, at Mascoutah.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at St. John's Evangelical church, Mascoutah. Rev. A.W.
Hoelscher will officiate. Interment will be in the Mascoutah city cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Moll

Mrs. John Arnold, Sr.
Died Last Night
Mrs. Sophia Arnold, wife of John Arnold, Sr., died at the family home in Stookey township last night after an illness
covering the past year. She reached the age of 66 years, 10 months and 27 days.
Deceased was born in Stookey township on March 19, 1872, a daughter of Anton Peterson and Magdalena Peterson, nee
Schmidt. She was married to John Arnold at Concordia Church on June 2, 1889.
Besides her husband she leaves one son, John Arnold, Jr., in Millstadt, and a daughter, Gertrude, wife of Richard
Muskopf, at North Dupo. She also leaves two sisters and three brothers: Margaret Faber and Katie Burton, of Burksville;
John Peterson and Robert Peterson, St.Louis, and William Peterson at Cincinnati. She leaves seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be held on Saturday from the Strauss-Alberter Funeral Home to Concordia Cemetery. Rev. Wm. Schweickhart,
of Concordia Church will officiate.
