Mrs Arthur Broge. 33. a resident of Lena, was seriously injured while her husband was also hurt about 5 o'clock this morning when their
automobile struck a culvert midway between Lena and Pearl City while they were en route to Lena. Their two daughters, aged 3 and 5 respectively. were uninjured. Mr. and
Mrs. Broge were brought to St. Francis hospital by Dr H L Walgren. Pearl City Mrs Broge suffered severe cuts and bruises about
the head and is also believed to be suffering from a slight brain concussion. The husband sustained several fractured ribs and numerous bruise about the body Exact details of the accident were not learned but it is thought that the
car skidded off the highway struck the culvert abutment and was then ditched The machine was somewhat damaged and towed in to
a Lena garage Mr Broge is employed at the Stouffer Hatcheres at Lena. He and his family had spent the night with friends near Pearl City and were returning home when the accident took place It was indicated that Mr. Broge might be able to leave
the hospital tomorrow but his wife will probably be confined for some time. Sheriff Lee Aurand was called to the scene and assisted in clearing the wreckage

Mrs. Adam Simmer entertained about 25 at her home Wednesday afternoon at a variety shower honoring Miss Lucille Gaulraupp. Miss Gaulrapps's approaching marriage to Charles Bastian of Galena will be an event of the autumn. Miss Gaulraupp was generously remembered with beautiful and useful gifts. The guests were entertained throughout the afternoon with various games and social converse. A delicious lunch was served at the close of the afternoon. Mrs. Simmer was assisted by Mrs. Hollis Leckington, Mrs. J.P. Altenbern and Mrs. C.L. Neimier.

Awakened by the cries of a pet cat, Mr. and Mrs. ARthur Broge of Lena, discovered their home filled with smoke caused by a fire of undetermined origin. The blaze, which started between two walls, caused damage amounting to several hundred dollars. After being awakened by the cat, Mr. and Mrs. Broge aroused their children and summoned the fire department. The fire burned through to the exterior and damaged the roof.

The Misses Edna Broge and Ireta Deets were hostesses Sunday afternoon at a delightful party and showere for Miss Ruth Loos, who, with her fiance, wee guests ofhonor. The affair was held at the apartment of Miss Broge, 417 South West avenue and five hundred was the afternoon entertainment, favors going to Mrs. L.Y. Parker, Irvin Toelle, Mrs. Joe Unzicker, Howard Synamon, the guest prize as well as many beautiful and useful shower gifts going to Miss Loos for her new home. Delicious refreshments were served at a table decorated in a color scheme of white and gold, jonquils carrying out the scheme.

Mrs. Nora Lawhorn, residing near Lena, was arrested by Deputy Sheriffs Ray Mead and Walter Krell on complaint made by her husband, William, who alleged assault and battery. The husband is 73 years old. He charged that his wife stood over his bed with a loaded revolvedr and threatened him and also that she pilfered $140 from his trousers pocket. She was scheduled for a hearing before Justice of the Peace M.L. Karels late today.

The marriage of Miss Edna Broge and Irvin Toelle of this city, wil be this afternoon (30 Sep 1939) at the parsonage of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church at Lena. Rev. L.H. Beto officiating. Karl Ludolph Jr. and Miss June Knodle of Freeport will be the attendants. Miss Knodle choosing a black outfit. The bride and groom will leave later in the afternoon on a short trip and will reside at 417 S. West Ave. on their return. The bride of a daughter of Mrs. Frank Broge of Lena, a graduate of the Lena high school and is empoyed by the Postal Telegraph company. Mr. Toelle is the son of Mrs. Robert Toelle, 825 West Center St. He graduated Freeport High school and the University of Illinois and is accountant for the Shindle Motors.

Announcement is made by Mr.a nd Mrs. Oliver Schulz of Lena, of the marriage of their daughter, Betty Mae to Francis Raders, son of Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Raders, residing near Lena, which was performed at the parsonage of the Lutheran church, Rev. H.E. Rasmussen being the officiating clergyman. The attendants were Norma and Irma Sampson, cousins of the bride. Mr. and Mrs. Raders wil go to housekeeping on the Duselmeier farm where they will be at homes to their friends.

Joan Broge, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Broge, had the misfortune to fall out of the hay mow at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Broge, where the family was visiting Sunday, breaking both bones in her left forearm. The bone in the little girls nose was fractured too. There wee rocks at the bottom of the hay chute on which she fell.
