Robert Ervin Ohlendorf, 27, a native of Freeport and a resident of this city until about two and one-half years ago, ended his life by shooting himself through the head with a shotgun in his parked automobile at Rockford early Sunday morning. The body of the victim was found by Patrolmen A Kelsey and Mark Parker, of the Rockford department, who were cruising about the city about 8 o'clock yesterday morning. About half of his head was blown off by the discharge of the gun, which was lying beside him in the car. According to reports from Rockford Ohlendorf and a number of companions had been about Rockford Saturday evening. It was said he had a quarrel with his girl friend and it is believed this caused him to become despondent and take his own life.
Three Freeport couples were with Ohlendorf at the home of his girl friend, Miss Marie Kiester, 204 North Third Street, Rockford, until about 3 o'clock Sunday morning according to Rockford police. Ohlendorf's mother, Mrs. Jennie Ohlendorf Nolan, said her son came home about 3:30 a.m. but left almost immediately without saying where he was going. The Winnebago county coroner, W. C. Ives, was informed by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Willes, Freeport, who were in the party, that Ohlendorf seemed in good spirits when leaving them, reports from Rockford indicated.
It is understood that Ohlendorf and his friends had lunch at a Rockford restaurant and when the friends departed he went to his home, obtained the shotgun and then drove to South Rockford avenue and Charles street where he parked the car and then fired the shotgun load through his head.
The two officers were cruising about in a squad car and observing the parked car made an investigation finding the body. Apparently the young man was in good spirits Saturday night and gave no intimation of his intentions.
Robert Ervin Ohlendorf was born in Freeport July 27, 1911, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Ohlendorf. He attended Freeport schools and was graduated from Freeport high school. He resided here until two and one-half years ago when he moved to Rockford to accept a position with the Colonial Baking company, having held that position until the time of his death. Surviving are his mother and a brother, Donald Ohlendorf, both of Rockford. An inquest is being held at Rockford today.
Funeral services will be held at the McAllister-Julian funeral home, 314 North Fifth street, Rockford at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. George W. Ridgway, pastor of the Episcopal church will conduct the services and the body will be brought to Freeport for internment in Oakland. Freeport Journal Standard, March 28, 1939
