His quiet and unassuming life and staunch adherence to the principles of the Gospel won him a warm place in the hearts of all who knew him. God, in His infinite wisdom, saw fit to remove from among us one whose influence did much to mold the character of his family and his congregation. Though dead, his influence still lives; and fondly we do look forward to the time when we may meet him on the other shore. For years he has been afflicted with shaking palsy, and gradually grew feebler with age, being unable to rise from his bed during the last six or eight months. He bore all his afflictions patiently expressed a desire to depart, and with a firm hope in the Rock of his salvation, he peacefully fell asleep. He leaves a widow, three sons, two daughters, 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and many friends to mourn his departure. May God comfort them in their bereavement. Funeral services were conducted at the house by Simon Graybill and at the church by John Nice and Daniel Kauffman. Text, Rev. 14:13. The Gospel Witness - Volume 1, Number 11 - June 14, 1905, page 84

Six brothers preceded her in death; Abram, John, Jacob, Andrew, Benjamin, and Henry. Sister Shoemaker united with the Mennonite church a few months after her marriage. Throughout the years she has been a faithful, devoted member of the Church. Her Christian life was a life of rare beauty and devotion which was known by all who knew her. For the past ten years she has suffered much because of rheumatism. For two years she has been practically an invalid, moving about the house on her wheel chair. Through all her suffering she maintained a spirit of patience and cheerfulness. She was always very appreciative of every kindness shown toward her. And one of her greatest joys was to be doing something for others. These characteristics endeared her to all who knew her. During the past several months she suffered from complications which hastened her death. On Wednesday, Sept. 23, she was busy with her sewing. That evening she took her bed and passed away unexpectedly but peacefully early Friday morning, Sept. 25. She was eagerly awaiting the time of her departure. She was confident that "to die was gain". Our loss is her eternal happiness. Funeral services were held at the Mennonite Church. A. C. Good of Sterling Congregation preached the sermon from the text. "For me to live is Christ", assisted by Aaron Loucks of Scottdale, Pa., and S. E. Graybill of the home congregation. Music was furnished by the Sterling congregation. He was ordained to the ministry in June, 1892, and on Dec. 17, 1902, he was ordained a bishop. From the beginning of his Christian life he took an active interest in the service of the Lord. As a minister and bishop he served faithfully as an overseer, as an evangelist, as an instructor in Bible conferences, as a leader in the various activities of the Church; at all times a faithful expounder of the faith. In official life he served frequently as a member of important committees, as a moderator (and sometimes secretary) of conferences; he served for a short time as President of the Mennonite Evangelizing and Benevolent Board, and for many years as Secretary of the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities. When the Mennonite Publication Board was organized in 1908 he was chosen President of the Board, in which capacity he served faithfully until a few years ago, when because of declining health, he requested to be relieved. Personally and officially he was well beloved, and the vacancies caused by his death will be hard to fill. He was fluent with the pen as well as with the tongue. BERTHA BRUBAKER (SHOEMAKER) SIEBER , daughter of the late Joseph S. and Elizabeth Brubaker Shoemaker, was born May 22, 1885, near Dakota, Ill. On February 10, 1950, at the age of nearly 65 years, she was rewarded with the perfect life. She was married on Sept. 1, 1908, to Charles Sieber , who preceded her in November, 1920. Through the following thirty years of widowhood, her life was spent in cheerful service for her children, for the many sick who benefited from her expert practical nursing, for her father whom she cared for in his last years, and later for the young people of Goshen College, whom she loved and served from 1937 to 1947 in the role of dietitian and cook. At the time of her death her church membership was with the Goshen College congregation, whose fellowship she appreciated deeply. Since 1947 she made her home with her children, passing from this life in the presence of the oldest, Daniel, of Nampa, Idaho. Also remaining to "arise and call her blessed" are John, of Freeport, Ill.; Charles, Twin Falls, Idaho; Elizabeth-Mrs. Ralph Hernley, Scottdale, Pa.; Ruth-Mrs. Robert Reist, Falfurrias, Tex.; and Miriam-Mrs. Millard Lind, Scottdale, Pa. CHARLES EARL SIEBER , was born in Mifflin C., Pa., Feb. 25, 1884. He was converted in his early teens, at which time he received baptism and united with the Mennonite Church of which he was a member until death. On Sept. 1, 1908, he was united in marriage with Bertha B. Shoemaker of Dakota, Ill. After a few years they moved to Twin Falls Co., Idaho, of which they were residents ever since. While here Bro. Sieber has gained many friends. His genial disposition and willingness to lend a hand in every good work were much admired by all who learned to know him. On Oct. 23 he took sick with typhoid fever which led to peritonitis, causing his death on Nov. 13 at the age of 36 y. 8 m. 18 d. He leaves his wife, 6 children (the oldest being only 11 year. old), an aged father, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, and many sympathizing friends. In his death the family loses a faithful husband and a loving father; the community, a good friend and neighbor; and the Church, a loyal member and earnest worker. He was a charter member of the Filer congregation and served almost continuously as a member of the board of trustees, as S. S. Supt., and as a leader of song, always being a loyal supporter of all the activities of the Church. The last hours of his life very forcibly portrayed the value and blessedness of having spent his days in the Master's service. When all that human hands could do, seemed of no avail, he requested to be anointed according to Jas. 5 for the healing of the body, if it be God's will. Shortly after this ceremony, however, he received the conviction that the time of his departure was nigh. After calling the family and friends present, one by one, to his bedside he bade them farewell and admonished them to be true to the Word and the Church and to meet him in heaven. He expressed his readiness to go, only wishing he could take his family with him. Death to him was the most blessed experience of his life. The whole scene was one which shall never be forgotten by all present. Funeral services were held in the Filer Church, Nov. 16, by S. Honderich and D. S. Graybill, using Isa. 55:8, 9, after which the body was brought back to Freeport, Ill., for burial. The funeral services were conducted there on Nov. 20, by A. C. Good of Sterling, Ill. Text, Jno. 14:1. Gospel Herald - Volume XIII, Number 37 - December 9, 1920, pages 742, 743
