ABSALOM URY
1832 - 1863

Absalom Ury was born March 17, 1832. He married Cynthia Jane Seeley 17 October 1859. He is described as 5’ 7” tall, dark hair and complexion and had blue eyes. He was a farmer. He was mustered into service in the Civil War at Camp Anna, September 11, 1862 by Capt. J.C. Hunsaker. He was a Private in C OH, 11th Regiment, 109th Infantry Illinois Volunteers. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1862. He deserted at Memphis, TN 24 March 1863. It is believed that he went home to Union County, IL to plant crops for his family’s survival. He voluntarily gave himself up 14 June 1863 and lost all pay and allowances by order of Major General J. B. McPherson and was demoted back to Private. There was not enough time for him to be issued a uniform before he was killed by a rifle ball to the head while on picket duty at the Battle of Vicksburg. He died in a field near Vicksburg, MS 19 June 1863 and his death was certified by Capt. W. Duncan. He is buried at St. Johns Cemetery near Jonesboro, Union County, Illinois.
