MRS. JESEFYE PIRTLE FROST

A Pioneer Mother Dies
Mrs. Jesefye Pirtle Frost, a pioneer Union County Mother dies at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jacob Smith, following an attack of pneumonia (on March 8, 1934).  The deceased had spent her entire life in the vicinity where she died, from her girlhood days to the ripe old age of 4 score and 4 years.  She lived through the days of the old spinning wheel, the ox team and covered wagons, down to the day of modern improvements.  She reared a family of (2) boys and (3) girls who are worthwhile citizens in the community.
Early in life after the death of her husband, (William Frost, died March 9, 1878, leaving Jesefye with the 5 children ages 10 years to 2 months), she toiled early and late for the support of her children.  Her home life was beautiful for busy hands and busy life made beautiful the pathway of life for those with whom she came in contact.
She was a member of a large family who have all preceded her in death with exception of one brother and one sister.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ida Smith, Mrs. Mary Smith and Mrs. Cora Kinder and (two sons) Henry Frost of Alto Pass, and James Frost of Carbondale.  She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Caroline (Pirtle) Nipper of Pomona and one brother, Luther Pirtle of Alto Pass.  Also several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday from the Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. W. W. Hunsaker in charge and the dear Old Pioneer Mother that had come to the end of a perfect life was laid to rest in the Alto Pass Cemetery.
Flower girls were granddaughters of the deceased and the pall bearers were grandsons.
The funeral was directed by George Hardin and interment was made in the Alto Pass Cemetery.

SAMUEL HOUSTON FROST

Samuel H. Frost died at his home in Jonesboro last Monday after a long and weary invalidism.  The funeral was held on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Hess, the service being conducted by Rev. H. E. McCollum of the Baptist church.  Interment was made in the Jonesboro cemetery.
Samuel Houston Frost was born near Dongola, Ill., on December 13, 1862, a son of Samuel and Talitha Frost.  He grew to manhood in the locality where he was born and on September 15, 1886, he was married to Octavia D. Kelley.  To this union five children were born:  Ursala of Jonesboro, Thurman, who died January 31, 1928; Mrs. Chas. Martin of Gadsden, Ala; Mrs. Frank Hess of Jonesboro and Mrs. Harry D. Albert of New York City.
He received a common school education and became a school teacher in his neighborhood.  He taught school for 17 years, never so far away that he had to move or stay away from his home, and conducted his farming operations at the same time.  In September 1901, he moved to Jonesboro and for a time was engaged in mining and shipping silica to the Matteson Paint Company of Cape Girardeau, Mo.  In a few years, together with the late James A. Matteson and Robert W. Matteson of Cape Girardeau, he organized the Southern Illinois Manufacturing Company of Jonesboro for the purpose of manufacturing silica.  The Matteson interest in the company was later purchased by George Thomson of Chicago.  Mr. Frost operated this plant for a number of years, giving most of his time to the business.  In 1905 he was elected mayor of Jonesboro and served one term.
Mr. Frost's outstanding characteristic was his loyalty to his friends and unswerving honesty in all businss dealings.
