HISTORY
OF
THE GENERAL SOCIETY OF THE WAR OF 1812
The General Society of the War of 1812 was founded, historically, from two sources: one, The Society of the War of 1812 in the State of Maryland, founded as "The Defenders of Baltimore" at Fort McHenry on September 14, 1814, by the soldiers who had successfully defended that Fort; and two, The Society of the War of 1812 in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, originated by soldiers of the Philadelphia area immediately after the Battle of Fort McHenry but not formally organized as The Society of the War of 1812 in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania until January 9, 1854. Both organizations have had continued existence with annual meetings since that date.

On the morning of 14 September 1814, at Fort McHenry, Maryland, a group of battle-weary citizen-soldiers came out of the Star Fort and entered the Tavern immediately outside. They rested and drank to their successful defense of Baltimore and the repulse, by land and sea, of the British who were then sailing away down the bay. Incidentally it was this battle which inspired Francis Scott Key to write our national anthem- The Star-Spangled Banner. These men in the Tavern vowed to join together every year thereafter to celebrate and commemorate their victory. Their descendants have continued to celebrate this victory to the present day. They were joined later by veterans of the Battle of North Point and other battle areas and formed The Society of the War of 1812 in the State of Maryland. Thus, the roots of the Society were founded in the Fort McHenry Tavern.

The declared objectives of The General Society of the War of 1812 are: the collection and preservation of rolls, records, books and other documents relating to the War of 1812; the encouragement of research and the preservation of historical data, including memorials to patriots of that era in our national history; the caring for the graves of the veterans of the War of 1812; the cherishing, maintenance and extension of the institutions of American freedom; the fostering of true patriotism of love of country.
