Thomas Adams

Thomas Adams, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home in Topeka, Kansas, Monday at 3 a.m. after a short illness, aged 74 years.

Mr. Adams was the last of the five Adams brothers to pass away. He was a native of Washington county, having been born on the Adams farm near Oak Grove where he grew to manhood and at the age of seventeen years entered the Union Army and served until near the end of the war, having been with Sherman on his march to the sea and was severely wounded at Maryetta [sic], Ga. The bullet which struck his arm also injured his brother John, who fought at his side. Both were members of the 80th Ill. regiment. Thos. Adams had been left among the hopelessly wounded, but was later placed in a hospital and nursed back to life, though his arm was almost useless to him the remainder of his lifetime. Many years ago Mr. Adams went to Nebraska with a party of homeseekers, but later returned to Illinois and for the past twenty-five years has been a resident of Kansas and in late years retired and made his home in Topeka. His wife preceded him in death some years ago. Mr. Adams' last visit to his old home in Nashville was during the illness of his brother, the late Hugh C. Adams. Those left to mourn his departure are his two daughters, Mary and Edna, two sisters, Mrs. Thos. Corr of Staplehurst, Neb., and Mrs. W.D. Cox of Goodland, Ind., a half-brother, Wm. Slade of Columbus, Kansas, a half-sister, Mrs. Sarah Hamor of Edwardsville. Funeral services were held at the home and interment made at Corning, Kansas, where his wife was also buried. His old comrades and many close friends in this city will cherish his memory as a good citizen and a brave defender of the Stars and Stripes.
