A couple of stories about Herman Olin Frieman
 1.       My cousin, Kathleen, told me a story told to her by her father, Harry, Dad's oldsest brother.
Uncle Harry said dad told him that baby Herman [Herman Orval Frieman] was sick and was taken to Pinckneyville Hospital. Dad said he prayed for his son to be saved but God told him not to worry, but that He had decided to take him. Right after that, the phone rang and Dad was told the baby had died.
 2.       Dad told me (Kathyrn) that Mom had the last girl in DuQuoin Hospital. When he was sleeping, he dreamed he saw an angel carrying his baby girl down the hall. The next day he found out that the baby had died at that exact time of the dream.
      * He told me that not long before he died. Said he had never told anyone that before because he was afraid they would think he was out of his mind.
      * * I guess he knew who to tell, because I have never doubted if for one minute.

Letter to Herman & Edna Frieman from Johnny Merkel, their nephew
Dear Frieman Family stamp size photo of Johnnie Merkel Corsica
5 June 1944
Received your swell letter the other day but since spring weather has hit here, I can't seem to get started on my letter writing. No kidding, we have been getting swell weather. It has been very warm with the sun shining every day and have had very little rain. Most of the fellows go swimming everyday but I am still sweating out a pair of trunks from home, the mail man doesn't seem to be in much of a hurry.

Yes I guess you are enjoying the baseball season this year with both the Cards and the Browns in first place. It looked for awhile like the Yanks were going to take things over but I see by the latest Stars and Stripes that the Browns are back in first. Both Chicago teams are still in last place and it doesn't look as though they will ever get out. The softball team here at the base just one the championship of this sector but they have started a new league already and the team that won the championship lost their first game by the score of 1 to 0, it was close but it still counts as a loss so they really have to get going to make up for it.

Speaking of catching fish, Clarence writes that all you have to do up his way is sling the in the line and pull it out with a fish on it. He's lucky, all the streams up there had never been fished in before the soldiers went there. Some of the fellows fish around here but never seem to catch anything except a few perch now and then and that's not enough to get me interested in it.

Sorry to hear Herman is being kept so busy but glad to hear he is still out of the Army. We finally sent a few of the fellows home on rotation but I don't think my name will ever come up on that.

If something don't come up to spoil it, I am going to take a short trip to Italy. I have everything arranged but the plane doesn't leave until the end of the week and I'm afraid by then something will come up that I can't go. My main purpose in going to Italy is to see a friend of mine who is a bombardier over there. This guy is doing alright for himself, he was just awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

We have a boxing card on tonight and I think I'll go and take it in. The last card they had, which was two weeks ago, was pretty good. some of the fellows don't know how to box worth a darn but there are others who put on a good show.

Just received a lot of work to do so I guess I had better sign off and get busy on it.

P. S. Hope you noticed My
            address has been changed.
  Love,
      Johnnie

            Ends Divorce Suit

Little One's Father Becomes
Reconciled to His Wife
in Court

St. Louis, Nov. 6 -- Reinhardt H. Friemann who is seeking a divorce from Millie Friemann saw his one-year-old boy for the first time to-day, when he went into court to prosecute his suit. The sight of his child, which he never before had been permitted to see, softened Friemann's heart and he agreed to a dismissal of the suit, became reconciled with his wife and left the courthouse carrying the child in his arms.
The pleadings of the Judge and attaches of the court were added to the prattling of the baby boy in the task of bringing the father and mother together.
The Friemanns were married on December 20, 1902 and separated on April 10, 1904, when Mrs. Friemann went to live with her mother. While she was at her mother's home the baby was born. The husband filed for divorce charging desertion.
