Gale Dickey
GALE DICKEY IS KILLED BY TRAIN TUESDAY
Gale Dickey, 44, farmer, living 4 miles southeast of Pierce was killed a few minutes before noon Tuesday when his truck, loaded with sugar beets, was struck at the crossing near the Pierce elevator by a Union Pacific passenger train, No. 38, the Pony Express, being pulled by two engines. The train was carrying a large number of soldiers. Dickey, who was hauling beets for a neighbor was driving west on a highway when the southbound train struck his truck, a short distance north of Pierce. The truck was struck by the pilot of the engine. The load of beets was knocked off the truck but the truck itself was snagged by the pilot and carried more that 100 yards before it fell off. Dickey's body fell out of the truck and came to rest on the grade near a rail. Dickey's body was badly broken, the Sheriff said. Three men working at a nearby beet dump saw the accident they told the Sheriff. Earlier in the day Dickey had told friends "I have a busy day ahead of me. I'm going to haul five loads today." Coroner T. C. Wilmoth, who investigated, said that Dickey undoubtedly died instantly. His injuries included a skull fracture.
