Christine and Henry were married in St. John's New Minden, and then bought farm land in the Hoyleton area for $8.00 an acre. He was a charter member of Hoyleton Lutheran church and served as first deacon and janitor of that church. In 1917, when the church celebrated its 50th anniversary, he was one of 3 surviving charter members. He was 79 at the time of his death. Although Christine lived to be 83, she was totally blind the last 7 years of her life - said to be the result of unsuccessful cataract surgery. She was cared for by her youngest daughter, Lena (Carolina) who never married. Although unable to see, she was able to find her way around the house unaided, even in her declining years and was very proficient at such tasks as peeling potatoes.

However, the depression             came and he, together with many, many others, was laid off.             After being unemployed for 2 years, in spite of day to day efforts to find any             kind of work, he lost all possessions, including his car and bank account.             Naturally, under the circumstances, he was delighted one day to be called             back to his old job under the Roosevelt New Deal Law (National Recovery Act).             However, upon his return, he learned the wage rates had been reduced and his             pay would now be $14 a week for the same work for which he had previously             received $40. He read that alone he could do little to change this, so decided             to become active in organizing a Union where he worked. As a result of his             ef-forts, together with some of the other employees, a union was formed and             he was elected Presi-dent of this local union. After several years as Pres.,             he was drafted by the National Union to be it's field Representative.             He worked for 20 years to better working conditions through collective             bargaining - much of it with the International Association of Machinists -             a job, which has pro-vided much personal satisfaction through helping others.             After 20 years, he decided retirement was in order and chose             Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where he now resides.
