2. Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Hoffman (William) - b. Oct. 11, 1821; d. Aug. 16, 1899;
m. 1843 Caroline Pfilippine Eleonore Schrieber - b. June 15,1824; d. Nov. 18,1895.

William (the name he was called after he came to America) was born at Rothenuffeln, Germany, and died in the New Minden area. His wife, the former Caroline Schrieber, whom he married in 1843, also was from Germany - Russbend, near Preusche (also spelled Preusz and Preuss) Minden. William and Caroline are buried in St. John's Cemetery, New Minden. They are buried side by side, in-stead of in a row in order of death, as was customary in this old cemetery. Their lot is also in a prominent spot near the center. Members of the family think this distinction was made because the land for the church and cemetery had been a gift of William's father. This would seem a logical conclusion. We assume William came to America in 1838 with his parents.

At any rate he was married here in 1843 and became a charter member of St. John's in 1846. The William Hoffmans son, Johann C. H. (called Herman) was killed by lightning, when he was 17 years old. This was a real tragedy to the family, especially since he was the third son to die. Herman is said to have been driving a wagon, some distance from his home when lightning struck, but the horses made their way home without a driver.

As a young man, he farmed in the vicinity of North Prairie, until 1881, when they moved to a farm southeast of Hoyleton, Illinois., where he lived until 1910. He retired at that time and moved to Hoyleton. 6 children Mary; Louis; Adolph; Ernst; Martin; Minnie.

6. Dorothy Marie Stahmer - b. Sept. 13, 1929; m. Sept. 18, 1949, Walter Grote - b. Sept. 17, 1926, who works for Centralia Cartage Co., Centralia, Illinois. Dorothy attended Browns Business College, Centralia, and worked for Hollywood Candy Co. before marriage. 3 children - Curtis; Wayne; Mary Ann.

7. Curtis Walter Grote - b. March 30, 1952. Curt starred in baseball at Nashville, Community H. S. and now attends MacMur-ray College, Jacksonville, Illinois., and is a member of their baseball team. He was picked by the Detroit Tigers in the annual Major League Baseball draft.

Don is music instructor at Kaskaskia Jr. College and Shirley gives private lessons in pi-ano and voice in her home in Centralia, ILL. 3 children - 2 boys; 1 girl.

6. Mark Maschoff - b. Nov. 19, 1939; m. Aug. 27, 1966, Patricia Rutz of Collin-sville, IL. - b. Dec. 16, 1940. Mark and Pat attended River Forest College to become parochial school teachers and then went on to receive their masters from Bradley U., Peoria, Illinois. Mark now has his doctorate from St. Louis U. Both teach science at the elementary level in St. Louis Parkway Public School System. No children.

6. Marlene Maschoff - b. Jan. 8,1947; m. Aug. 6,1966, Curtis McDermott - b. Nov. 1943. Marlene is an electrical engineer, having graduated from Washington University. She also is organist and choir director of St. John's United Church of Christ, St. Louis. Curtis graduated from Washington University School of Engineering and is presently manager of Industrial Engineering and Equipment Co., St. Louis. No children.

5. Alice Maschoff - b. Aug. 26, 1911; m. Oct. 21, 1939, Walter Theile - b. May 30, 1903. 3 children - Harold; Ronald; Elaine.

6. Harold Theile -b. Apr. 6, 1941 ; m. Dec. 18, 1969 , Mary LeSage -b. Nov. 8, Harold has a master's from the U. of Illinois. Both are teachers. They have since the summer of 1970 lived in New Plymouth, New Zealand. 1 child - Dawn Theile - b. March 4, 1971.

6. Ronald Theile -b. July 7, 1944. Attended the University of Mo. Now is employed by a school in Normandy, Mo.

6. Elaine Theile - b. Dec. 5, 1948; m. Sept. 5, 1970, Larry Schisler - b. Oct. 9, 1945. Elaine is secretary for St. Louis Postal Data Center. Larry is supervisor for Blue Cross, St. Louis. He is a graduate of SE Mo. State College, Cape Girardeau, Mo., which she at-tended for 3 years.

3. Caroline Philippine Hoffman - b. Oct. 12, 1854; d. Oct. 11, 1941;
m. May 21, 1881, Henry Reinkensmeyer - b. Jan. 27, 1859; d. Feb. 20, 1936.
Henry came to the U. S. at age 21 to avoid military duty in Germany, as did so many

others at that time. Here he worked as a farm hand for William Hoffman, Caroline's father. It was here that he met his wife. After they married they farmed in the Covington area.
