Caroline Wilhelmine Hoffman
(Sixth Child of John E. Hoffman)

3. Caroline Wilhelmine Hoffman - b. Sept. 7, 1848; d; Dec. 25, 1901; m. May 17, 1866, Ernst Henry Frederick Hohman (called Henry).,- b. Feb. 24, 1838; d. April 17, 1897. 8 children - John; Charles; William; Ida; Clara; Emma; Edward; Benjamin. Caroline, who was the fourth child born to Catherine and John E., was, according to her pictures and those who knew her, a very pretty young lady. She was born and grew up on a farm southwest of Nashville. She was an invalid the last ten years of her life, having suffered a stroke which left her paralyzed. Henry was born in the little village, named Siedinghausen, near Minden, in Westphalia in northwest-ern Germany and went to church and was baptized in a very old church (tradition has it that the church and possibly a few of its actual foundation stones go back to the days of Charlemagne in the 9th century). It is definitely "Charlemagne territory" and lovely countryside, with rolling hills, quaint old barns and wooden painted statues of

27

saints under the gables and a famous "Kaisers Denkmal", or statue on a river bend nearby, called Bergkirchen. Both Siedinghausen and Bergkirchen are really only crossroads, with Min-den, for which our New Minden in Washington Co. was named, the nearest fairly large town (by 1969, it had grown to about 50,000). The description of this area was given me by Elmo Hoh-man, who visited there in 1929 and again in 1958. He found the actual house where Henry lived still standing and occupied by the widow of a distant cousin named Hohman. The Hohmans were combined farmers and shoemakers and the shoe business was carried on in Nashville for three generations - by Henry - his son, William and William's son Howard. Next to the church at Bergkirchen, which is very old and interesting is a cemetery which contains many names of families now living around Nashville, who are their descendants. Henry left Germany in the 1850's, sailing from Bremen in a sailing boat to New Orleans then up the Mississippi by river boat and on to Nashville, In. He left Germany as a young man, in order to escape army duty, which was required of all young men when they reached a certain age. After arriving in America, it was said that his conscience bothered him, so he enlisted in the army here during the Civil War. He was a member of the 49th Infantry Regiment. He was one of 8 brothers and sisters who eventually came to the US Henry's obituary said he died after a long illness (believed to have been cancer), at the age of 59. To quote from the obituary which appeared in a Nashville German newspaper, "The de-ceased was a good citizen, good Christian, good husband, good father, member of the church and many years Council member of St. Paul's Evangelical Church.

      4. John Albert Hohman - b. 1867; d. March 1925; m. Oct. 7,1891 Emma Pauline Steffen - b. March 10, 1866; d. Jan. 18, 1957. John and Emma lived for a short time in Salem. Illi-nois., and then returned to Nashville, where he in partnership with Henry Paul, opened a hardware store sometime before 1900. In 1908, Mr. Paul sold his interest to Frank Gewe and went West for his health. John was one of the original owners of the Hohman Building, which was built in 1913 and occupied by three Hohman brothers - John; William and Edward. When Edward left Nashville to move to Chicago, his interest in the building was purchased by Dr. George Green. his brother-in-law (husband of Clara Hohman). He occupied one of the upstairs offices until he died. The only remaining member of the Hohman family. to occupy the building since the death in 1965 of Howard Hohman is Dr. Edgar Reinhardt. son-in-law of Dr. Green, who, until the building was sold in April of 1971 to Donald Williamson, was part owner. John died in a Mt. Vernon hospital, unexpectedly, following surgery and while seemingly making a good recovery. Although Emma was a shut-in most of her life, being very frail and having a loss of hearing, she lived to be 90 and was always interested in family and friends., Her father, August Steffen was one of the organizers of St. Paul's Evangelical Church in Nashville. Symbol of Merger
New Old Tones at Bethany-Peace

"Two old bells from Bethany United Church of Christ will provide new tones for the newly-merged congregation at Bethany-Peace United Church of Christ, 11936 Bellefontaine Road. The bells have hung in the tower of Bethany Church at Red Bud and Rosalie Aves. for 56 years and have now been moved to the new quarters. They are temporarily located on a platform at the right of the entrance of Peace Church. The merger was approved Feb. 22, 1970, and incorporated Jan. 14, 1971. In 1879, the ladies society (Frauen Verein) donated the bells for the church at 23rd and Washington St. They are called Mary & Martha. Clara Hoffman a long time member at Bethany, provided funds for the moving of the bells."

"The Bells at Bethany Church have been very dear to me, always," she says. "At the old church at 23rd & Washington the bells would ring every Sat. evening at 7 P.M. I can remember back as a child, my grandmother and I would walk up the block to the Church, she telling me the story of Mary and Martha living in the little town of Bethany. Living near the church most of my life and hearing the bells ring over the years, I enjoyed them and I hope and pray that Mary and Martha will continue to ring many more years for others to enjoy." A tower for the bells is to be built as soon as funds can be obtained. The membership of the new congregation is 1000.
