Kinyon Settlement

Very few of today's generation know of the existence of Kinyon Settlement. But once this site, four miles south of Okawville, was the hub of a community of pioneers in which the Kinyon name dominated. The old cemetery, shown here, is slowly but surely falling into decay. The stone of John Kinyon, left in the photo, shows he was born in 1805. That of his wife, Elvira, stands adjacent to the north. Once this cemetery was the burial place of the Friends, Wilsons, and various others, but no burial has been made here for at least half a century.

The Grand Prairie Baptist Church, which served the community, stood just south of the cemetery. When it was abandoned, the building was moved to a nearby farm, where it still is being used as a farm shed.

The editor of this book, luckily, has the old bible used in this church, a gift of his mother, Mrs. Sarah Jane Brinkman.

Epitaphs Of Admonition -- John W. Allen, dean of Southern Illinois historians, in his "Legends and Lore of Southern Illinois," now brought into sharp focus by the Sesquicentennial, devotes some space in his book to epitaphs found in neighboring cemeteries. "One of the most common themes of epitaphs of a century and more ago," says Allen, "is that of admonition." Such an epitaph, occasionally varied somewhat in its wording: says "Take warning, friends, as you pass by, As you are now, so once was I; As I am now, so shall ye be. Prepare for death and follow me." This warning epitaph, so one story goes, prompted a waggish rhymster with a somewhat morbid sense of humor to add: "To follow you I am not bent, Until I know which way you went."

a Grover Brinkman Photo of John Kinyon's tombstone accompanies this article :
The photo of an epitaph similar to the one Allen describes, shown here, was found on the tombstone of John Kinyon, in the Kinyon Cemetery, no longer in use, about three miles southwest of Okawville.
