William Schmitt

Born February 4, 1835 in Duchroth , Rheimkreis Germany.

He immigrated to the USA at the age of five years and was raised by his mother in Okawville, Illinois.

Married Samantha Jane Taylor on January 29, 1857 in Okawville, Washington County, Illinois.

They lived there until after the Civil War , then moved to a farm in Newton County, Missouri .

William Schmitt died July 29, 1913 and is buried in the Powers Cemetery , Newton County, Missouri .

Even though his children changed the spelling of their name.
William Schmitt went by that name even to his grave

Civil War Records show various discrepencies :
Willima Schmitt is listed as William Smith
with residence listed as St. Clair County rather than Washington County

William Schmitt, a married farmer from Bridgeport, Washington Co., IL.
stood 5' 7" tall with auburn hair, gray eyes, and a fair complexion.
Served during the Civil War in the Union Army
with Co. B, 111th Illinois US Infantry Regiment
Enlisted on August 13, 1862 in Richview, Washington Co., IL.
Musterd in as a Private on September 18, 1862 at Camp Marshall, IL.
Mustered out on June 6, 1865 in Washington D.C.
