First Doctors Were Registered in 1877
      . . . The Illinois medical practice act of 1877. . . provided for the establishment of the state board of health.
One of the duties of the board was to register physicians and surgeons and to issue licenses for them to practice.
      It took almost all of two years, 1877-78 for all medical men to register. Eighteen of those registering those first two years were from Washington county.
The youngest was Dr. Salem Goodner, 25, of New Minden, a graduate of the Medical College of Ohio.
The oldest was Dr. H. B. Lucas, 63, of Richview, a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia.
      Others registering from Washington County in 1877-78 were:

David Berry, C. L. Fancher, and W. C. Pace, all of Ashley;

      Dr. Claude J. Sanders started practicing mediceine in Ashley, Illinois in 1906. Beginning in the office of Sumner Berry, the old Ashley doctor. Sumner retired and took a job as clerk in the Ashley bank.

      In the forty some years at Ashley he worked at the time by making house calls in a buggy pulled by his favorite steed, or many times house calls were made on horseback. Babies were delivered for five dollars cash or seven dollars in merchandise; bread, meat, potatoes, eggs or anything that could be bartered for his services. He lived on the corner of East Second Street and madison Street in a large two-story house. Later it was torn down and a brick structure was erected for he and his wife Elsie.

      Doctor Sanders moved to Centralia, Illinois in 1945 to begin practicing there. His son, Orland, was a doctor in that city also.

      Dr. Claude J. Sanders, who has practiced medicine in this city for nearly forty years, moved his office from Ashley to Centralia on Tuesday last and is now located in the latter city for the practice of his profession. dr. sanders has been practicing medicine in Ashley since 1906, when he came here and entered into partnership with Dr. Sumner G. Berry, who retired a few years later to become cashier of the Ashley Bank now the Ashley State Bank.

Dr. C. J. Sanders

      Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Queen Boggs Chapel, Centralia, for Dr. C. J. Sanders.
      Dr. Sanders, 78, Centralia, past president of the Ashley State Bank, died Wednesday night, April 12, at St. Mary's Hospital, Centralia. He had been ill three months.
      He was born in Irvington, a son of Sam and Florence Baldridge Sanders.
      He received his early education at Carbondale and his M. D. degree from St. Louis University in 1906. He moved to Ashley in 1906 and practiced medicine here for 38 years before reocating in Centralia. He was a partner with Dr. Sumner G. Berry at Ashley.
      While here he served a number of terms on the Ashley Township High School board and was president of the board 13 years.
      He was a 32nd Mason and a Shriner. he belonged to the Scottish Rite and the Ainbad Temple, East St. Louis; Centralia Lodge Number 201 A. F. & M., Royal Arch Masons , Illinois Chapter Number 93, R. A. M., Cyrene Commandery No. 23 K. T., Order of the Eastern Star No. 353, IOOF and Modern Woodemen of America.
      He also was a member of the American Medical Association, Illinois State medical Association, Marion County Medical Association, Rotary Club, Centralia Shrine Club, Methodist Men's Club and Centralia Chamber of Commerce. He was president of the medical association in both Marion and Washington counties.
      Dr. Sanders waas married to Elsie E. Miller in Irvington September 1, 1907. Mrs. Sanders survives.
      He is also survived by a son, Dr. O. M. Sanders, Centralia, and two grandchildren.
      Reverend H. G. Hurley officiated at the funeral.
      Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Centralia.

This building, built by Dr. Sanders in 1925 for his office. In the year 2006, it was still standing at the corner of Madison Street and East Rail Road Street, south of the fire house. Notice the tile roof. Much of the labor was provide by men owing him money.
