George Elkendier

The well-known veteran, George Elkendier, whose demise was mentioned in last week's JOURNAL, passed away at his home in Addieville Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 8 o'clock p.m., aged 74 years, 5 months and 21 days. Deceased was born April 16, 1840, at Oldenburg, Germany, and in his boyhood came to the United States. In January, 1869, he was married to Miss Marie Suedmeyer, who preceded him in death Oct. 5, 1912. Of the five children born to this happy union three survive, Chris and George and Maggie (Mrs. H.H. Meyer), one sister, Mrs. Chris Thoms, two grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. When at the outbreak of the Civil War President Lincoln called for troops Mr. Elkendier enlisted and served four years in Co. E, 2nd Ill. Cavalry. He was a brave soldier, a good citizen and helpful neighbor, whose death is deplored by all, who knew him.

The funeral services were held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the house and then in the Evangelical church, Rev. C.L. Langerhans officiating. Interment was made in the adjacent cemetery. The Nashville G.A.R. Post, of which deceased was a member, attended and paid tribute to their departed comrade.
