The actual banking or lending institution is not identified in this loan book.
However, thanks to Mr. Morris Huck and Mr. Bertram Dueker and their knowledge of
the area and its early inhabitants it can be presumed to be from the Hoyleton Bank.
This bank became known as the German State Bank and then the Hoyleton State Bank.
The Hoyleton State Bank was bought by Magna Bank and subsequently by Union Planters Bank
and is located at 85 E. Saint Louis Street.
The Loan Book was probably sold as a part of the sale of the Hoyleton Bank in the late 1990s.
This database contains the information on loans made during the time frame of November 1856
to September 1899 as recorded in this ledger book titled "LOAN BOOK" on its spine.
This 14 x 8.25 inch ledger book was made by the Johnson & Bradford Wholesale & Retail
Booksellers, Stationers, and Blank Book Manufacturers of Springfield, Illinois.
This book, which was bought via an Internet Auction in the spring of 2001, is in excellent
condition. The Arizona-based seller said he purchased the book as a part of a lot in another
auction. Each entry encompassed two pages, which had header blank lines for Township, Range
and County, Illinois. These pages had those blank lines filled in with Township 1S, Range 2W
of Washington County, Illinois. All the names were originally entered with their family name
last. To facilitate searching in this database the first person listed for each loan has the
family name listed first.
Many of the people who did business with this bank were of German origin.
It is evident by the many spelling variants that the banking personnel did not know how to
spell the German family names. In the interest of genealogy and to assist those interested
in their ancestors from this region, current spellings and "best guesses" of the family names
are included in brackets. Please note that not all columns are filled in for every entry in
the book.
The abbreviations of "T. Tr." and "T. T." stand for Township Treasurer.
It is not known what this position was with respect to the banking institution.
The final statement in the Loan Book is written by Wm. Rolf and says the following:
On Account of a record being kept in the Cash Book of all the money loaned and paid in,
it was thought unnecessary to keep a record of them in this Book also, the notes were
therefore not entered in this Book. The Notes however entered in here are all paid in at
this date.
The Notes now in force are entered in an other Record.
