honoring Marcellus J. Newman as a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor
for his service in the Civil War

Adopted April 23, 1998
While serving hospital duty because of a physical disability,
Marcellus J. Newman rescued John F. Chandler of Marion County
while the rest of the regiment was falling back on May 14, 1864 near Resaca, Georgia.

Mustered out June 6, 1865 in Washington D. C.
Married #2 - Mrs. Nancy J. Ross on April 11, 1882 in Marion County, Illinois
Died : November 15, 1905 probably in Meeker, Lincoln Co., Oklahoma Territory

Burial : New Hope Cemetery, Meeker, Lincoln Co. Oklahoma (section 3, lot 2)
