Additional information provided by : Marydith Beeman :
His funeral card, which states he was born Jan. 8, 1830, died Sept. 13, 1917
age 87 yrs. 7 mos. 5 days. He is reputed to be buried in the GAR cemetery in
Miami, OK cemetery, though I could not find the grave in a visit several years ago.
At age 57, on a paper dated May 17, 1886 he described himself as having fair
complexion, dark hair and blue eyes, 5' 8"
During the Civil War, he was absent sick in March and June of 1863 at Nashville (TN?)
with severe lung disease and rheumatism after being at or near Murfreesboro TN, was
treated there till about July 1, 1863. Was then sent to Louisville and assigned to light
duty then to Atlanta to join the regiment. He lost partial hearing by the explosion of a
shell near near him on about the 15th of December, 1864 near Nashville.
He said that since leaving the service, he lived in Mason and Douglas Cos., IL,
Bates Co MO, then settled in Miami OK.

Said John Smith was born in the town of Nashville, County of Washington, State of Illinois.
Enlisted at Mound City, Illinois, December 5th, 1866.

He is 26 years of age; 5 feet 5 ½ inches high; blue eyes; light hair; light complexion;
and by occupation a laborer.

It is suspected that he may have been foully dealt with, if such is the case,
any person giving any information that will bring the offenders to justice will
receive the above reward.
