A BIRTHDAY DINNER

Mrs. Emeline Whitacre is an old pioneer of Wayne County. She was born in Ohio in 1830, and came to Illinois with her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Scott (more familiarly known by older citizens as Major Scott) in the year 1840, and has been a resident of Wayne County ever since. On Saturday, April 3^rd, that being her 67^th birthday, her relatives, friends and neighbors began to gather at her home about ten o’clock and before noon quite a number had arrived, all bringing well-filled baskets. The ladies took possession of the kitchen and invited Mrs. Whitacre into the sitting room to entertain the company.

Between twelve and one o’clock dinner was announced and we were invited out to partake thereof. We were soon seated around a long table which was filled to overflowing with the good things of this life and after everyone was satisfied it rather reminded me of the loaves and fishes there being so much to gather up. The afternoon was spent in social conversation, singing, recitations and select reading. The last thing before taking our depart the good old hymn was sung “God be With You Till We Meet Again,” and all gave Mrs. Whitacre and each other a hearty hand-shake, then started home feeling that the day had been pleasantly and profitably spent.
