Obituary – Emily Cravens

Emily Cravens, daughter of Robert and Sarah Cravens, was born in Randolph county, North Carolina, June 12, 1820, and died in Fairfield, Illinois, Jan. 24, 1896, aged 75 years, 7 months, and 12 days. She emigrated with her parents to Tennessee early in life. She was converted at a camp meeting in Tennessee in 1836 and joined the Methodist Episcopal church, of which she has ever since been a faithful member. She came to this state in company with her parents, in 1838, and was married to Mr. Ewing Young, Dec. 1####0. To them were born ten children, seven of whom are still living, the others dying in infancy. She leaves a husband, seven children, one brother and one sister and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Young’s death was caused by paralysis. She had the third stroke just a week before her death, from which she never rallied, although unconscious for some time before her death. We have the assurance that she has gone to receive her reward in heaven. Another mother in Israel has gone from the church militant to join the church triumphant. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. B. Ravenscroft, assisted by Revs. H. O. Hiser and Robt. Ellis, at Mt. Olivet M. E. church and were attended by a large concourse of people.

Notes for SARAH JANE YOUNG:

June 1926

SARAH JANE (YOUNG) DAISY

Sarah Jane Young, daughter of Ewing and Emily Young, was born April 22, 1848, 7 miles west of Fairfield, Illinois; died June 13, 1926 in Fairfield, Illinois, age 78 years, 1 month and 21 days.

On December 25, 1866 she was united in marriage to George T.(H.) Daisy by Rev. James Johnson in Fairfield, Illinois, pastor of the M.E. church. At the age of 16, she was converted in the old Bethel M.E. Church, 3 miles west of Fairfield and joined the Mt. Olive M.E. church near her father’s home and later years moved her membership to the First M.E. church in Fairfield where she resided and remained a faithful Christian member until her death, telling her loved ones just before she passed away that she was ready to go to her heavenly home and her regrets were leaving George alone. If she had lived until December 25, 1926, they would have been married 60 years. She was a wonderful woman always considerate of others and doing good. Not being blessed with any children of her own she gave a home to two orphan boys, James Craven and Andy Daisy and being a devoted mother and rearing to manhood. She was a devoted wife and mother and her friends only could be counted by the number who knew her. She was widely known and will be sadly missed by her many friends but most by her lonely husband. She leaves to mourn her demise, three sisters namely: Mrs. L.T. Hughes of Moorehouse, MO., Mrs. J.S. Baldwin, of Quincy, Ill., and Mrs. B.F. Sons, of near Fairfield, Ill., and one brother, Robert E. Young of near Fairfield, Illinois the two boys she raised and quite a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Notes for GEORGE H. DAISY:

March 1931

GEO. H. DAISY DIED

DOWN AT JONESBORO

George H. Daisy, civil war veteran and splendid citizen, died at the home of his son Andrew J. Daisy, at Jonesboro last Friday afternoon. He had been paralyzed for a long time, and suffered another stroke.

The body was brought to this city Saturday afternoon, and remained at the Haefele-Terrell funeral home until ten o’clock Sunday afternoon when it was taken to the Methodist church for the funeral service by the pastor, Rev. Roy Kean. The Legion boys were in attendance at the funeral, and took charge of the burial at the Maple Hill cemetery.

Mr. Daisy spent a large part of his life as a resident of this city. He lost his wife some five years ago. Since that time he has made his home with his foster son, Andrew J. Daisy who cared for him as tenderly as ever a son cared for a real father.

George H. Daisy

George Hartman Daisy, son of Richard and Emma Daisy, was born at Salem, Ohio, March 23, 1846, and died March 27, 1931.

Mr. Daisy came to Illinois in 1853 when but seven years of age and settled in Wayne County with his parents.

He was married to Sarah Jane Young, daughter of Ewing and Emily Young, December 26, 1867. The ceremony was performed in the old Methodist Episcopal church here in Fairfield by the Rev. C.A. Johnson, pastor.

Mr. and Mrs. Daisy had no children of their own but reared two in their home, J. J. Craven and A.J. Daisy, the latter being adopted as a son. To all who knew him Mr. Daisy was known as one who loved children.

Mrs. Daisy passed away June 22, 1926 and since then the deceased has made his home for the most part with his son at Jonesboro, with the exception of a short time spent here and a few days at the Soldiers Home in Quincy, Ill.

Mr. Daisy served his country in the Civil War, being a member of Company F. 136 Illinois Volunteer Infantry.

For many years he was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It was during the ministry of Rev. J.B. Ravenscroft that Mr. Daisy transferred his membership from the Mt. Olive church to this congregation.

Immediate relatives who survive him are one sister, Mary Jane Hubbard, Mitchell, Kan., and three half-sisters, Weaver Barnard, Sims,Illinois and Mrs. Emma Algood, Orchardville, Illinois, and Mrs. Ella Forth, Roscoe Calif., also the two adopted sons already mentioned.

H.  J.  Young

H. J. Young was born in Lamard township, Wayne Co., April 7, 1844.  Entered his eternal rest Sept. 1, 1911, after 4 days of intense suffering from burns received in the burning of his home when his wife was burned to death.

He was married to Elizabeth McCracken August 7, 1862.  To this union were born 9 children, 5 of whom are living and were present at his death: Mrs. Emily Harmon, Robert, Darwin, Arthur and Weaver. The following having preceded him to the glory world, Ewing C., Margaret, Ethel, and Florence E. The deceased had thirty-one grandchildren. He also leaves one brother and five sisters namely: Robert Young, Mrs. Zack Hughes, Mrs. George Daisy, Mrs. Sam Baldwin, Mrs. Ben Sons, Mrs. Emmer Green.

Bro. Young professed faith in Christ at the age of 20 years under the labors of Rev. Charles Sabine at the Mt. Olivet church. Bro. Young and wife both united with the M. E. church and later they united with the General Baptist church at New Hope a nd were faithful members until death. Bro. Young took an active part in all church work.

At the time of his death he was Supt. of Victory Sunday school, one of the largest rural Sunday schools in the county. Shortly before he died realizing how near he was to his eternal home he said "It is only a step, let me step over." I would say to his many relatives and friends, "Be ye ready, for the Messenger will come for us all and like his call, may be at midnight." "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, from henceforth, yea. Saveth the Spirit that they may rest from their labors nd their works do follow them."
