DANIEL SMITH Civil War Veteran

Daniel Smith son of John R. and Mary “Polly” (Myers) Smith, was born April 12, 1844. He enlisted as a private in the Civil War of 1861, September 11th, 1862, at the age of 18 years. Serving 2 years 9 months and was discharged at the close of the war in 1865. He was a member of Co. D. 110th Ill. Volunteers. He fought in the battles of Perryville, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge and Lookout Mountains where he was injured. Daniel was also a participant in the March with General Sherman to the Sea. Unlike his father who was considered the biggest man in the county Daniel was small in stature as the picture below demonstrates. He weighed only seventy-six pounds when he enlisted in the Civil War. Daniels favorite song was “Marching Through Georgia” in later years he would ask a niece to play the song on a old pump organ, and he would march around the room.

On October 7, 1867 Daniel was united in marriage to Mary Harshbarger the daughter of William and Emily (Brown) Harshbarger. The Harshbarger family links back to a Revolutionary War Hero Captain Oliver Brown and to a passenger on the Mayflower Degory Priest.
