In Genealogy you never know where your search will take you and that has never been truer than in the Jones family history. This family traces back to the Revolutionary War, although records seem to conflict at times this is a family that was there. The Jones family, were explorers and it seems for generations were the first to open new territories in this county. People who push the boundaries of a country exploring new territories, are not the type to sit back and wait for others to fight their battles, but are on the frontlines. The first Jones that I am starting with is Churchill Jones, I have seen family trees that have gone back farther I just have not proven them. If you have or have information you would like to add please contact me, thanks Laurie lsepien@msn.com

The Jones family made their home along the waters of New River and Elk Creek, at a spot where there was an island in the river. This place was known for years as Jones Ford. During the Revolution, William was included in Captain Flower Swift's Company, but apparently was not fit to serve. It appears that after Betty died, William went to Mecklenburg County where he married Susanna and then returned west. The following year, he was made an Overseer of the road from Jones' Ford to Cranberry Creek. William's will was dated in Grayson County on September 9, 1805."[ii][ii]

That same year a gang of surveyors came through surveying for the Louisville and Hashville Railroad. Among the surveyors was a German by the name of George Opdyke, whose home was in New York. He told the people that he would donate the money to build the (L & H) railroad through their little town if they would name it after him... so the little town was named Opdyke.

Jones Family Resources

William Henry Perrin, History of Jefferson Co., Il

"William A. Jones merchant, Opdyke. This gentleman represents one of the Jones families who came here when the southwest part of Jefferson County was a wilderness. He was one of that class who helped by his industry and perseverance, to make out of a wilderness a beautiful and productive country. He was born May 10, 1810, in Virginia, but was reared principally in Indiana. He was a farmer and merchant in Indiana, and in 1858 moved to this county, where he tilled the soil for about fourteen years, breaking up the very soil on which the village of Opdyke now stands, having built the first substantial frame house on this prairie. About ten years ago, he again embarked on the mercantile business, which he now follows. He was joined in matrimony to Sarah Ann Conner, a native of Ohio, but reared in Indiana. She was the daughter of Willoughby and Rachel JOHNSON Conner, and is the mother of ten children, of whom four our now living, viz., George W. and James W. are twins (they were born July 3, 1836, both are married and merchants by occupation) Alanson C. (born January 10, 1844 and is married to Martha Foster a grand-daughter of Judge Foster and the mother of four children viz., Melnotte, born November 18, 1876, Pearl M., born June 1878, Augusta born June 1880, and Royal H. born 1882): Mary Maria Jones(who is yet living with her parents). The father of our subject, George Jones, was a native of Virginia, a farmer by occupation. He came to Indiana in 1816, and died there in his seventy fifth year. The mother of our subject, Prudence KEITH Jones, was a native of Virginia; she died in Indiana, and was the mother of eight children, seven sons and one daughter. All the boys have been residents of this county. Our subject and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church of which he is also the local minister. He is  an I.O.O.F. and in politics has always been a Democrat. He was a member of the County Board who built the courthouse. He had been no office seeker nor politician.".

"James K. Jones, farmer, P. O. Mount Vernon was born August 14, 1816, in Virginia. He was a son of George Jones also a native of Virginia, and a farmer by occupation. He died in Jennings County, Indiana. The mother if our subject, Prudence (KEITH) Jones was a native of Virginia, but died in Jennings County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Rev.
