MRS. T. C. McMACKIN PASSED AWAY

Mrs. Thomas C. McMackin  well known and highly esteemed resident of this city died at her home on Main street last Thursday morning. Mrs. McMackin has not been in good health for some time but has been able to be up about her home until a short time ago when a complication of diseases arose which caused her death, The deceased was confined to her bed only a few days, from the 18th of March until the 23rd, but suffered intensely until a short time before her death when God in his infinite mercy permitted her pains to cease and she softly closed her eyes and slept.  So gently was her passing that the ones who watched hardly knew when she was gone. Mrs. McMackin was a kind and noble woman, none ever entered her home without a warm welcome nor left without feeling the warmth of genuine hospitality.  Disease did not destroy the charm of a kind indulgent disposition, nor old age diminish her unselfish solicitude for her friends and loved ones.  She will be sadly missed by neighbors and friends, son and daughter, but none will miss her as will the lonely, solitary man who has been her constant companion throughout their many wedded years and who is left to mourn her loss. Funeral services were held at the home Saturday at 2:30 p. m., by Dr. J. W. Flint, pastor of the First M. E. church and the body laid to rest in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Clara A. McCollum was born in Wayne County, Illinois, March 15, 1851.   Died in Fairfield, Illinois, March 23, 1916, aged 65 years and eight days.  She began a Christian life early and grew to be the mature Christian known by her neighbors.  She joined the Methodist Episcopal church with the old Woodland Class under the ministry of Rev. R. H. Massey. In January 1876 she was received by certificate into the Fairfield church by Rev. J. A. Baird, and has been a faithful member ever since.  As long as health permitted she was active and efficient in all lines of Christian endeavor.  When by reason of failing strength she was compelled to retire from more active scenes, she still retained a lively interest in all that concerned the church she loved and served so well.  In the last conversation she had with her pastor she inquired most thoughtfully about all things of interest to this cause, expressing deep regret that she was no longer able to go about and help.  In her passing the church loses a choice spirit, a valuable and devoted helper. Her illness was long continued and for some days her sufferings  were intense, but were all borne without a murmur.  She was leaning on the one who once suffered all things for her.  A short time before the spirit left the body, God in mercy caused the pain to cease and she quietly and peacefully passed away. Her domestic life was ideal.  It began when on Dec. 22, 1872 she was married to Thos. C. McMackin, of Fairfield, Ill.  Three children came to bless the home. One daughter, Rosie, died in early childhood.  One daughter, Mrs. Wm. Dugdale, of Grays Lake, Ill., one son, Fred C, of Sioux City, Iowa, the bereaved husband, four sisters, one brother, son-in-law, daughter-in-law and two grand children are joined together in common grief, but weep in hope. When dark clouds hang low, a Christian's faith becomes an unspeakable comfort.  When our loved ones die in the Lord, the memory of a pure Christian life remains as a priceless legacy.  Such an experience is here today.

Card of Thanks

We wish to extend to our friends our sincere thanks for their kind
assistance and many acts of kindness and words of sympathy, during the sickness and death of our dear wife and mother.

T. C. McMackin UNDERTAKER

AND ONLY LICENSED EMBALMER IN THE COUNTY

The calling of the undertaker has developed into a veritable profession, most of it’s features now being conducted upon exact scientific principles as for instance embalming and disinfecting, while the mechanical branch is equally marked with a degree of skill and perfection. It is a profession which, to successfully follow, requires aside from the scientific knowledge involved a mechanical ability and on the whole a combination and peculiar exercise of faculties not usually found in an ordinary individual. Such is the responsible position occupied by the undertaker and funeral director. The reputation which Thos. C. McMackin has acquired in this profession is based upon the highest qualifications and is reflected in a patronage keenly appreciated of propriety. Mr. McMackin’s business dates back more than twenty years and he is one of the oldest and most prominent undertaker in this section of the state. He holds a certificate from the Illinois State Board of Health, is a graduate of the National School of Embalming and has every facility for conducting his business in the most scientific and approved manner. He employs the newest methods for destroying all disease-producing germs or bacteria of any nature. He is also a skilled mechanic, having followed the trade of a brick mason before he became a professional undertaker. He office is located in J. R. Crews’ furniture store on West Main Street. Mr. McMackin is prepared to show a stock of funeral goods that can not be surpassed for variety, quality and price. He has a suitable hearse and is prepared to take entire control of a funeral on a moments notice.

FAIRFIELD VETERAN PASSES AWAY
AT MARION FACILITY

W. Leslie “Mutt” Montgomery

W. Leslie Montgomery, commonly called “Mutt”, by his more intimate friends, passed away at the Marion Veterans Facility Tuesday at 5:12 p.m.  He had been taken there Monday suffering from hemorrhages of the stomach.  Hospital attendants pronounced his case serious when he arrived there, and notified the ambulance man to notify his relatives. He had not been in good health for several years, and had spent several weeks at the Facility for ulcers of the stomach and a kidney ailment.  He seemed to improved and was home and active during our 11th annual fair.  The remains were returned to Fairfield and final rites will be conducted Friday afternoon from the Nale Funeral Home, where the body will remain in state until the hour of the funeral. Elder Warren D. Crippen of Cisne will have charge, with interment in Maple Hill Mr. Montgomery was born in Cisne 52 years ago, son of Jerome and Lou Montgomery.  He was married to Miss Bess Perrine of Fairfield and four children blessed the union, namely; Mary Lynn of Oklahoma City, Okla., David  and Winston at home, and Warren, in the service in Hawaii.  The wife and children survive. The daughter arrived from Oklahoma Wednesday morning. Mr. Montgomery was a veteran of World War I and had been active for years with the American Legion.  He was recently named director of Veterans Administration in Wayne County and had been active in this line of work in recent weeks.  He was one of the organizers of the Wayne County Fair Association, and one of its best boosters, and loyal workers. He had served as custodian at the Fairfield Elks Lodge for many years, quitting that post for what he thought were more important duties this past summer. Thus another familiar face around town is gone, and a dependable trooper wends his way along that pathway whence no traveler returns.  Farewell, “Mutt”.  As a new comer to Fairfield, we shall miss you and your pleasant, courteous ways.
