This cemetery was photographed and transcribed by Michael J. Von Goebel in the fall of 2006! All photos are donated by Michael and information in this color is supplied by Michael.

This is another cemetery facing extinction.  As has been previously recorded, this cemetery has more people buried here than can be accounted for.  This Cemetery is located just about a half mile North of Exit #100 I-64. Crossroads are Route 242 and CR 100 N.  Heading North on 242 it is located on your right.  You will walk along a tree row and when you get to a concrete sluice gate you will look south and see a grove of trees about 50 yards due South Trotter is located in that grove on the edge of the field.

According to the book Wayne County Illinois Cemetery Inscriptions Vol. IV by Doris Bland on May 5th 1973 she and Elmer F. Bland Jr. and Rev. Harold Mayberry visited the Trotter Cemetery. The cemetery was described as following “The only part of the cemetery which was cleared off is the inner fenced section. The outer section is badly overgrown.” I have been told that the Hansbrough family, were buried in the fenced area. Rev. Mayberry said that Harriet J. Hansbrough was buried there in 1924 and hers was the last space left for burial. Today the fenced area is gone and all of the cemetery is now overgrown and uncared for. Michael believes that there are more headstones buried under the leaves and debris waiting to be uncovered again. The Trotter Cemetery is believed to have been larger the Baltimore (Olive Branch Cemetery).

OBITUARIES

Mt. Vernon Register, April 10, 1924 p.1 c.7.

VERY OLD WAYNE CITY WOMAN IS BURIED TODAY

More than fifty years a resident of the vicinity of Wayne City. Mrs. Harriet Hansbrough died yesterday morning in her 95th year. Mrs. Hansbrough was in many respects an unusual woman and had remarkable use of her mental faculties, while her physical strength was unusual for one of her extreme age. She was possessed of a most loveable disposition and is described by those who know her long and intimately as a most gracious woman, and it was natural she should possess the love and respect of everyone who knew her. Mrs. Hansbrough for some time had made her home with her son Park Hansbrough and family. Her husband died years ago. She is survived by one son Park Hansbrough and two daughters, Mrs. Floyd (Cloyd) Lane and Mrs. Gannon of Wayne County. Funeral services were held today at 2 o'clock p.m. at Olive Branch and burial followed in Trotter cemetery.
