Harrison and Elizabeth (Wookey Anniversary 50th Anniversary

It is indeed fitting and proper when a man and woman have lived together for a half century that the eventful day that rounds out their fiftieth wedding anniversary should be celebrated in some appropriate way. The homecoming of the sons and daughters with their children has at such a time more than a common interest, as the occurrence is one that comes to any couple but once. A very delightful event occurred on New Year's day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Burch in this city, being no less than the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the marriage of that esteemed couple. The day had been looked forward to for some time with pleasant anticipations and when the time arrived nearly all of the sons and daughters and their children gathered in the old home to enjoy reminiscences of the years past, and recollections of events of common interest when all were one family and beneath the paternal roof. Harrison D. Burch was born July 22, 1833 in Chautauqua County NY and came to Whiteside County IL in 1837, with his parents, who were among the first families settling in Garden Plain IL. Miss Elizabeth Wookey was born May 29, 1835, in England, and came to this country when fifteen years of age, her parents locating in Kenosha WI. Mr. Burch and Miss Wookey were married in that city, January 1, 1856, and during a large portion of the past fifty years resided on a large farm near the town of Union Grove IL, about three and one-half miles west of this city, where their son Herbert and family now reside. Mr. and Mrs. Burch removed from the farm to this city several years ago, Mr. Burch being engaged in the stock business most of the time since. Those present at the golden wedding anniversary Monday were T. J. Burch of Fulton IL and Mr. and Mrs. Ira Burch of Union Grove, the gentlemen being brothers of Mr. Burch; Mr. E. Stinton of this city, father-in-law of T. J. Burch; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Paddock of Union Grove, Mrs. Paddock being a sister of Mrs. Burch. The following children, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law and grandchildren were also present; Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Burch and son Will and Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Burch and sons Ray and Arthur, and daughters Ina and Fern of this city; Mrs. H. E. Hindes of Goffs KS; Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Dysart and son Raymond of Franklin Grove, Il; Mr. George Burch and daughters Eveline, Helen and Mary of Galt IL; Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Burch and son Harold and daughters Bernice and Luella of Union Grove; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Burch and daughter Irene and son Fremont of Sterling. Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Spears and Rev. M. G. Wenz and daughter of this city were the only guests present who were not relatives. There were in all thirty-nine persons present. The dinner served on this occasion at the Burch home was one of the best, and all partaking of it relished it greatly. The boys, whether they ventured to mention it or not, thought that the good things were just "such as mother used to make" and they were. It was a matter of regret that two daughters, Mrs. Walter King of Brooklyn NY and Mrs. James Spears of Goffs KS, could not be present with their families to enjoy the occasion. Mr. Burch is one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of Morrison and his good wife has always, with him, been highly esteemed by all who have had the pleasure of her acquaintance. Their many friends here and elsewhere will be pleased to know that these people though over seventy years old are still strong and vigorous, and all hope that many more years will be added to their lives, and that these will be replete with the good things of this life, and that their many friends will never grow fewer.

Fellows Anniversary
It is always pleasant to record the half-century anniversary of married life of the citizens of a community, for such an event always causes one to assume a retrospective attitude, and to think of the many changes which have taken place during such a period of married life. Yesterday Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fellows, highly respected citizens of Unionville, celebrated the half century mark of their married life, and in honor of the occasion about forty of their friend and relatives gathered at their home in Unionville. Both Mr. and Mrs. Fellows are still very active, and entered the spirit of the day in a manner which gave their visitors, who had gathered to pay them homage, much pleasure. The home had been prettily decorated in a combination of gold and autumn leaves, and from eleven o'clock, when the guest began to gather, until late in the afternoon, merriment was at its height.

Mr. and Mrs. Fellows were married at Round Grove on October 11, 1871, and have spent practically all their married life withen a radius of a few miles of the place of their marriage. Mrs. Fellows maiden name was Margaret Eiteman, and she was born in Lancaster county, Pennslyvania, in 1840, coming to Illinois when about eight years of age. Mr Fellows was born in Lee county in 1841. Upon their marriage they made their home at Round Grove , and having resided in this vicinity ever since have had a splendid opportunity to see the development and many changes that time has brought about. In 1891 the subjects of this sketch moved from Round Grove toi Union Grove and in the following year moved to Lyndon, where they resided four years, and since that time have made their home in Morrison and Unionville, principally the latter place. Two children, Emerson and Lulu M., whose married name was Ewing, were born to them. Mrs. Ewing passed away in 1909.

Mr. Fellows was one of the many men in this vicinity who offered their services to the government in suppressing the rebellion in the south in the war of '61-66, and his military record shows that he enlisted on Aug. 13,1862, as a member of Co. B, 75th Ill. Inf. with which he served for nearly three years, having been mustered out on June 12, 1865. He is at present a membver of the Alpheus Clark Post No. 60, G.A.R. and his army comrades were present at hre festivities of yesterday. It is rather singular too that there were present five couples who had passed their fiftieth anniversary of wedded life, they being: Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. R.S. Lasher, Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Howe, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bent, and the host and hostess fo the occasion.

Reminiscences of the time when Mr. and Mrs. Fellows took their maritial vows were undoubtedly awakened in their minds when their visitors tendered them a second charivari, which they seemed to enjoy and took in good part. But this was not all that they were tendered, for their visitors presented them with several gifts of gold and many useful articles. A bounteous dinner was served at noon, the menu of which was as follows: chicken pie, mashed potatoes, fried sweet potatoes, cabbage salad, pickles olives, lima beans, coffee, jelly, bread and butter, apple pie a la mode, doughnuts and wafers. At the close of this bounteous and delicioud dinner, Mr. Lum, commander of Alpheus Clark Post G.A.R. arose, and addressing Mr. and Mrs. Fellows and presenting them with a small package, said: "Fifty years of wedded life----through days of young manhood and womanhood; when hope beat high and the future allured, to the more sedate period when the years have lengthened and the evening shadows are approaching----are vouchsafed to few, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fellows are to be congratulated upon having reached that rare interval in life. That their joys may yet be many and their sorrows few in their remaining years is the wish of Mr. Fellows' comrades of the Grand Army of the Republic, who tender them this slight gift of remembrance on their Fiftieth Wedding Day. " Mr. Fellows responded briefly and with much feeling.

Those in attendance at this happy occasion included the following: Mr. and Mrs. George McNeil, Boone, IA, Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Comstock and Mr. Ralph Comstock, Rochelle; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kadel, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Irwin, Ira Kadel, Miss Helen Kadel and Mrs. Ella Andrews, Rock Falls. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Brown and daughter, Prophetstown; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Frank, Walnut; Mrs. W. Watson, Mrs. Margaret Cook, Mr. and Mrs. O. Leroy Walter, Mr and Mrs. George Twombly, Mr. and Mrs. John Britle, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Garrison, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hea???, Mrs E. D. Bacon, Mr. and Mrs. P.F. Boyd, Mr. and Mrs. W.B. B?????, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Gray, Mrs. Baker, Miss Neva Baker, Mr and Mrs. C.A. Lum, Mr. and Mrs. Howe, Mr. and Mrs. J.W.Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bent, Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Hall, Mr. and Mrs. R. Lasher, Jacob Cline, John Seavey and David Moulton, Morrison.
