My greatgrandfather, George Leland Hollinshead, was the grandson of John and Elizabeth Hollinshead. The article that I’m providing here comes from the collection of family history amassed over the years. I’m providing it here because I realize these lists are an invaluable source of tracking down family members. Inconsistencies and errors aren’t my fault, I didn’t wish to change the original article (Old Newspaper) in any way. History of the Town of Ustick
Ustick History for Aug. 16
(Editors Note: This installment is devoted to the old Hollinshead cemetery in Ustick Township.) With the death in 1842 of Mrs. Julia Ann Rush, first adult to die in the town of Ustick, a burial ground was established on the Hollinshead farm in Sec. 8, on the highest ridge of the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. The wooded lot became a community burial ground and 47 of the graves are identifiable while others are unmarked. Julia Ann Rush, 1788-1842, was a great niece of Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and a stout patriot in her own right. She was the great grandmother of C. B[urton] Hollinshead of Fulton, present owner of the farm. Elizabeth Hollinshead, wife of John Hollinshead, 1807-1863, was a niece of Benjamin Rush. First burials in the cemetery include those of John Hollinshead in 1843 and Thomas J. Knight in the same year. Other burials in the ‘40s were H.W. Daniels, Coty Ingham, Reuben Patrick and Affa Patrick. Family names in the cemetery include Carlton, Daniels, Farwell, Hollinshead, Houghton, Ingham, Knight, Lavalie, McKenzie, Mitchell, Patrick, Rice, Ritchie, Rush, Salsbury, and Yates. A Civil War veteran named Collins is thought to be buried there. Fifteen members of the Hollinshead family are buried in the plot, the last being Clare Rush Hollinshead, in the Spring of 1944. He was son of Daniel Hollinshead who died Aug. 4, 1926, at the age of 92. Joshua Hollinshead deeded the cemetery to the county as long as it should be fenced and a survey was made by E.O. Hill of the plot with measures 2.64 chains by 3.54 chains. Few burials in the last half century and it’s inaccessibility have lessened interest in its maintenance and it now is not fenced but is grazed to keep down the weeds. The cemetery is of particular interest to the society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as it contains the grave of Mrs. Rush, and they have compiled a list of the known burials there. It is as follows:

One of the unmarked graves is believed to be James Collins, Pvt. Co I 75th IL Inf. John Kier - Co. G. - 156 - Ill. Inf. is reported to be buried in the cemetery, Mrs. Viva Akker of Morrison, a daughter of the late John Knight supplies the information that Charles C. Knight died in April, 1916, at the age of 91 years and is buried in the Hollinshead cemetery. He was born April 9, 1825, perhaps in Bangor, Maine, for he came as a small boy to Whiteside County from that city. His first wife was Julia [Ann] Hollinshead and she too is buried in the Hollinshead cemetery. He later married Mrs. Nancy Randall Walkup who is buried in Nebraska. Charles C. Knight’s father was Captain George Knight who came from England and is buried in the old part of the cemetery at Fulton, Illinois. [Charles’s father was a George Knight, but his was a private in the Revolutionary War. The George Knight who is referenced here as coming from England in fact died in Maine in 1671.]
