Charles W. Deets and Miss Bertha G. Mensch will be married Thursday evening, January 18, 1906 at 8 o'clock at the home of the parents of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Mensch, in Mason City IA. A number of the relatives of the groom from Emerson and vicinity have gone to Mason City to attend the wedding, and the entire party expects to return soon after the ceremony. The bride and groom will be at home to their friends after February 1, 1883 on the Carl Engles farm, half a mile northwest of Emerson. The bride is a former Emerson young lady, having lived near that place for several years until the removal of her parents to Iowa. The groom is the son of W.W. Deets of Emerson and is a young man of much ability and one who has a great many friends who will unite in congratulations. Mrs. John Chalmers of this city is a sister of the bride.
The Deets-Mensch wedding announced some time ago in the Standard took place at Mason City, Iowa on Wednesday [01/24/1906]. It was an elaborate social affair. The bride, Miss Bertha daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Mensch, formerly of Emerson, and the groom, Charles Deets, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Deets of Emerson, were the contracting parties. The marriage took place in a corner at the bride’s home which was decorated with carnations, smilax and ferns, over which a large bell was suspended. The bride wore a white dress and carried white roses. The ceremony was performed in the presence of about one hundred guests, a number of them being Sterling people. A nice supper was served, many presents were received by the bride and the evening was a very pleasant and social one. Mr. and Mrs. Deets will begin housekeeping on the Carl Engle farm near Emerson in the spring. They have the congratulations and best wishes of hosts of friends in this vicinity. A spring bride, who chose one of the earliest dates of the ever-romantic season for her marriage, was Miss June McDermott, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. McDermott of 415 State street. This stately, good-looking young woman pledged nuptial vows with Laurence E. Deets of Princeton IL, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Deets of Emerson, IL, in a pretty informal wedding read at the hour of 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon by Rev. Kyle Booth in the parlors of the First Congregational church. The beautiful strains of Liebestraum were played by Mrs. Rolland Miller as some sixty guests assembled for the ceremony and just preceding the opening notes of Lohrengrin's wedding march Miss Alice Rowland of Chicago offered two lovely song favorite, "At Dawning" and "I Love You Truly". Freshly cut sprays of rich pink snapdragons and lacy fern flared gracefully from two large floor vases at either side of the improvised altar, their beauty emphasized by the mellow light of large single tapers flanking the scene. Standing beside the bride was her life-long friend, Mrs. Russell Geller of Springfield, Ohio, a former Peorian who acted as matron of honor, and Charles Deets of Emerson IL was at his brother's right, serving as best man. Lloyd McBride of Glen Ellyn was usher. A distinctive light wool ensemble of the new spring grey beige was worn by the bride and had a heavy lace yoke to the frock with a rippling collar of pointed fox as luxurious trimming to the three-quarters length coat. Her lovely jet locks showed beneath a clever brown coarse straw hat, which harmonized perfectly with her brown accessories. A corsage of deep purple orchids completed this smart, informal bridal costume. Mrs. Geller was gowned in a becoming beige suit with brown accessories and pinned to her shoulder was a pretty corsage of Johanna Hill roses. Mrs. Paul Hayes of Chicago, as hostess at the reception was introducing wedding guests to one another and best wishes were being showered on the happy bridal pair before they departed on a short wedding trip by motor.
