147th Regiment
From the Prophetstown Echo January 26, 1938

Seventy-three years ago this month, President Lincoln called on Illinois for ten more regiments of troops to finish the war. The 147th Regiment was the first one of these ten to be recruited and organized, and although they were not mustered in until Feb. 18th, most of the boys actually enlisted in January. Companies B and G were recruited wholly in Whiteside County. Several men in these two companies gave Prophetstown as their address. Some of these came back to live here all or the most of their lives; others are long ago forgotten. We give the list as the records show. CO B: David Hess, Fayette Martin (who lived and died in Portland), Chas. O. Morse, Orenlus Reynolds, Jno. C. Rogers, George E. Swarthout (Lyndon), Abaline C. Bardwell, Capt. of Company G. Captain Bardwell enlisted as a - Private and was elected Captain as soon as they were mustered in. Captain Bardwell was a son of Dr. Bardwell who was a local doctor here at that time. The Captain later became an attorney and lived in Dixon many years.

In this company were Cassius Dennis, Henry C. Dennis, John R. Bray, George F. Furry, Solomon France (Grandfather of Mrs. Carl Hansen and Mrs. Frank Carlson of Prophetstown and Elmer Fritch of Walnut, Geo. W. Hudson, Harrison L.Johnson (the brother of Clem Johnson), Curtis Minor, Guy C. Mateson, John H. Rose (for many years a shoemaker), Harley Reynolds and Elbert Wheelock (father of S.E. Wheelock, who taught school here and is now in the furniture business in Rock Falls; also the uncle of Cecil and Charles Wheelock).

This regiment was not engaged in any regular battles but was used in fighting guerrilla bands, protecting Union property and patroling Confederate troops after the war was over.

From the official records of this regiment we read, that "Lieutenant Chas. Bent of Co. B with 20 men of his company were sent to Fort Pulaski as a garrison. Lieut. Bent being responsible for the government property amounting to several millions of dollars and which he satisfactorily turned over to his successor when relieved." Lieut. Bent will be remembered as the editor and owner of the Whiteside Sentinel printed at Morrison. His sons are the present editors.

The 147th Regiment was mustered out at Savannah Ga., Jan. 22, 1866, and left on the 23rd for home via boat to New York.

Seventy-Five years ago this week, five of our Prophetstown boys were discharged disabled from wounds from the 75th Illinois. They were E.L. Ballou, John Bacon, Stephen Beardslee, Jos. E. Case and Roswell Slater.

Think of this. The population of Whiteside County in 1860 was 18,729. Of this total of men, women and children 2,535 men enlisted in the Union Army. Then we find in looking up the records as given out by the Adjutant General's report that Whiteside Coutny as a unit gave more money to the Union cause than any other county in the state with the exception of Cook County, which with a population of ten times as many, gave only five times as much. Whiteside County gave $526,707.39, but they didn't have to buy gasoline those days.
