JAMES HASLAM - At his home in Union Grove, on Saturday May 12, 1894, Mr. James Haslam, aged 75 years, 1 month and 9 days. James Haslam was born in Little Lever, Lancashire, England, April 3, 1819. Was married to Miss Ann Johnson of the same place January 19, 1848. This union was blessed with a family of ten children - seven of whom with the wife of his choice crossed the chilly Jordan of Death before him and stood ready to welcome him home. He came to this country in 1849, locating in Massachusetts; he then moved to Virginia remaining there but a short time and then movd to LaSalle IL, where his services were needed as superintendent of the coal mine there, holding this position until 1861 when he bought a farm in Fair Haven Township, Carroll County, Ill, where he lived for twenty-two years. Selling his farm in 1883 he then moved to Whiteside county where he spent the remainder of his life. Among all his wanderings, wherever hislot was cast, he by his cheerful disposition and integrity made every one with whom he came in contact his friend, and truly in both Carroll and Whiteside counties where he is best known, his friends are legion. In 1867 he was converted, baptized and joined the U.B. Church in Christ, for the support of which he gave liberally of his means. By industry and frugality he had gathered enough of this world's goods around him to enable him to retire from active life and take comfort in his declining years. Of the three remaining children, Ann, wife of H. W. Kennedy, living at Malvern, Maggie wife of W.H. Moulton and Miss Alice, both of this place. All were present to alleviate his pain by tender acts of love and duty, so much needed in his last sickness. He was a kind father, ever thoughtful of the welfare of his family of which he was justly proud. His personal effects he left to his children, dividing it among them as best suited him. Thorough in all his dealings he did not leave this important matter until the last moment but long abefore his departure made all his arrangements and then calmly waited for the summons "Come up higher". By his every day life he fully proved that. They laid him away in the beautiful cemetery at Morrison followed by a large concourse of friends and neighbors who thus testify of the high esteem in which they held him. The services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Skinner at his late home on Monday afternoon.

EUGENE L. HAWES - At his home in this city, on Sunday, February 25, 1894, Mr. Eugene L. Haes aged 50 years, 5 months and 22 days. Eugene L. Hawes was born in Naples, Ontario county, N.Y. Sept. 3, 1843. He came with his father to Round Grove, this county in 1845, and here he spent the greater portion of his life. He lived several years in Sterling. She was married to John Hayes May 24, 1849, and settled on a farm near her childhood home, where she resided until October 1867, when with her husband and family she came ot Illinois and settled in Union Grove township, this county, where the family remained until December 1889, when they moved to this city and here has been her home up to the time of her death. In August 1847, she experienced religion and united with the Presbyterian church of which she was a consistent member until 1868 when she joined the Baptist church of Morrison to which she remained steadfast until her death. She was an earnest and unswerving christian, living her religion before the world at all times and when the final summons came she was prepared to depart. It may be said of here that she had charity for all, with malice toward none. Her kindness was made manifest to all as no hungry person ever left her door unfed. She desired not the plaudits of the world but endeavored so to live that she might at last receive the words, "Well done" from her Master. She lived a life ow unselfish devotion to those she loved. In her last illness she seemed to think not of self but of others and was cheerful and happy even when suffering. During her last hours she twice repeated softly "Eye hath not seen nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man the good things that are laid up for them that love Him." A few hours later she said to her sister, who stood by her side, "I am over there" and being asked if she were she replied with a sweet peaceful smile, 'Yes". HENRY GRATER HORNING - A very sad accident occurred at the residence of C.W. Reynolds of this township, on Wednesday evening of last week. Mr. Henry Horning of Malvern, son of Mr. S.E. Horning of Sterling was engaged in painting Mr. Reynolds's barn. He was standing upon a ladder, about thirty feet from the ground when Mr. Reynolds put his team in the stable. One of the horses ran out, struck the ladder, which fell, throwing Mr. Horning to the ground and breaking his neck. When they picked him up they found that he was dead. Nine years ago this month, while working upon the same barn, Mr. Horning fell and had one of his arms broken. Last January his wife died leaving her husband and five small children to mourn her loss. Now these children are orphaned and thus deprived of a father's loving care and attention. Mr. Horning was a hard working man, sober, industrious and honest. He was thirty-three years old and had been a resident of Malvern for a long time and was much esteemed by his acquaintances. The funeral services occurred on Friday afternoon at the residence of Mr. Reynolds. The remains were interred in the Hickory Grove cemetery beside those of his wife.

MARY JANE (HALSAM) HULETT - At her residence in Union Grove township, on Friday, July 25, 1890, Mrs. Mary Jane Hulett, aged 31 years 6 mo, 15 days. Mary Jane Haslam was born at LaSalle IL. Jan. 10, 1859. At an early age she moved with her parents to Fair Haven, Carroll county; while residing there and when eighteen years of age, she was converted and joined the United Brethren church, and has lived a life consistent with her christian confession. In 1882, with her father's family, she moved to Union Grove township, this county. On the 10th of September 1889 she was married to Robert G. Hulett. There remain a bereaved husband, an infant son, a loving father and three sorrowing sisters to mourn her loss. Her brief married life of less than one year furnished her an opportunity of exercising those qualifications with which she was abundantly endowed, of making a new home a place of beauty and a constant source of joy and happiness. Thus enshrined her loss only leaves a keener sorrow in the lives of those who knew and loved her best. The large concourse of friends at the funeral revealed the place of esteem she held in many hearts. Sorrow at her death is tempered by the hope she has left of a christian life, and consolation comes through the same christian hope that when those remaining have "finished their course" they may be re-united in the Father's mansions on the other shore. The funeral services were held at her late rsidence last Sabbath afternoon. Rev. J.W. Skinner officiating, and the remains were interred in Grove Hill cemetery in the presence of a great number of sorrowing and sympathizing friends.
