DAVID IVES , an old and respected resident of this town, died at his home, 32 East Quincy street, Monday, July 22, 1889 in the 77th year of his age. Mr. Ives was a native and life long resident of North Adams. He was born Dec. 22, 1812, being one of a family of 10 children of Asabel and Lydia Ives. His grandfather came from Rhode Island and was one of the first settlers of the town. Mr. Ives first wife was Miss Sarah Prentice of WOrthington. Two daughters were born to them, one of whom is Mrs. Chester Sly of Morrison. The other was Mrs. Martin Card of the saem place, who deceased three years ago. Mr. Card lost his wife some 40 years ago, and afterwards married Miss Elvira Shipper of Coleraine, by whom he also had two daughters. They are Mrs. James Whitely and Miss Carrie Ives, both of this town. His wife died three years ago. Mr. Ives' vocation was farming, occupying for 50 years a homestead at the foot of the east mountain, familiarly known as the David Ives farm. He was industrious and practical, successful in his calling. He continued in the management of his farm until a year ago last November, when his strength failed. After being confined to his bed for a year he left the old home and removed to 32 East Quincy street, where the remainder of his days were passed in helplessness, though he retained his faculties to the last. His death was the result of old age and heart failure. Mr. Ives was a quiet and retiring man, and of late years had left his home but little, consequently the younger generation knew but little of him. But to the older residents he was well known, and he commanded the confidence and respect of the community in which he had so long lived and labored. He united with the Methodist church when young, and was ever faithful in the discharge of his duties as a christian man, though failing health deprived him of the privilege of participating in public worship during his last years. He was visited frequently before death by his pastor, whose calls and ministrations were a source of great consolation and the final hour found him prepared to lay down the burden of the body and pass joyfully to the reward eyond. The funeral was held from the house at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Rev. J.P. Coyle officiating in the absence of Rev. Wm. W. Foster Jr.
