SAMUEL A. MAXWELL
- Mrs. Edith Smith of Erie has received a message that her father, Samuel A. Maxwell, formerly a prominent Whiteside county resident, died Monday [07/13/1931] at Port Angeles, Wash., in the home of his son, Ralph Maxwell. Funeral services will be held Wednesday in Port Angeles after which the body will be sent to Seattle for cremation. Mr. Maxwell was born December 27, 1851 at Jacobstown, north of Morrison, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose I. Maxwell, early residents of the county. He was married December 27, 1876, to Miss Esther Austin of Lyndon. For a number of years Mr. Maxwell taught in the rural schools and later was principal of the Rock Falls and Mt. Carroll high schools and instructor at the Northern Illinois College in Fulton. The family lived for a number of years near Unionville where Mr. Maxwell conducted a fruit and dairy farm. He also was the official weather bureau operator at Morrison for a time. In the spring of 1919 Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell moved to Okanogan, Wash., where they lived for a time and then went to Seattle. When Mr. Maxwell’s health commenced to fail they went to Port Angeles and lived with their son. Besides the widow Mr. Maxwell leaves two daughters, Mrs. Edith Smith of Erie and Mrs. Vera Beattie of Seattle, Wash., and two sons, Ralph of Port Angeles, Wash., and Harold of De Kalb, and one sister, Mrs. L. M. P. Hubbard of Erie.
Funeral Notice: Funeral services will be held Wednesday [04/16/1930] at 2:30 p.m. at the family home on West Fourth street. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery. Rev. Joseph G. Little, pastor of the Baptist church, and Rev. Harry K. Hostetter, assistant pastor of the Fourth Street M. E. church, will be in charge. Dr. Maxwell was a member of the Corinthian lodge No. 63, Knights of Pythias.
Second Funeral Notice: A large concourse of friends gathered to pay tribute to the memory of Dr. George Maxwell at the funeral services held Wednesday [04/16/1930] afternoon at 2 o’clock at the family home on West Fourth street. The services were conducted by Rev. Joseph G. Little, pastor of the Baptist church, and Rev. Harry K. Hostetter, assistant pastor of the Fourth Street M. E. church, both long time friends of Dr. Maxwell. They brought comforting messages from the Scriptures and offered prayer for the consolation of those who mourn. The members of Corinthian lodge No. 63, Knights of Pythias, attended in a body and the ritual of the lodge was observed both at the home and at the family lot in Riverside cemetery, where interment was made. H. H. Ramsay, chancellor commander, acted as chaplain during the lodge ceremony. Three members of the Knights of Pythias, H. H. Ramsay, Ralph Ludlow and Chris Angelos, served as casket bearers, the others being the following old friends: John W. Cushman, G. E. Bishop and Walter A. Thomas. In the assemblage of friends gathered at the rites were 18 fellow physicians from this city and nearby communities and a group of nearly as many nurses. Beautiful flowers banked the casket an covered the burial plot, testifying mutely to the high esteem in which Dr. Maxwell was held by numerous friends here and elsewhere. Among many out of town relatives and friends who attended the services were W. E. Barkman of Decatur, Mrs. Alice Columbia of Chicago, Mrs. William Buyers, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Beam, Dr. E. A. Murphy, Charles Johnson and other from Dixon, and a number from Polo, Coleta and other nearby places in Illinois and Iowa. Dr. Maxwell’s son Nevin Maxwell, who is attending school in Los Angeles, Calif., has been ill for the past week and was unable to come here to attend the funera.

FRED H. MAY
, 63, of Chicago, a former Prophetstown resident, died at 2 a.m. Sunday in the Sheridan Mansion convalescent home in Chicago, where he had been confined the past six weeks. Heart trouble was the cuase of his death. The body was brought to the Helm and Helm mortuary in Prophetstown on Sunday and funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Helm and Helm funeral home. Interment will be in Riverside cemetery in Prophetstown. The deceased was born on July 15, 1879, at Prophetstown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred May. He had been employed in the United States customs house office in Chicago for 39 years, from which he retired on May 1, 1942. He leaves one brother, David May of Port Washington, New York; who with his wife will arrive in Prophetstown this Monday evening. H. VINCENT MAY
, 89, formerly of Route 2, died Tuesday at Prophetstown Riverview Good Samaritan Center.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Melvin-Schilling Funeral Home in Sterling. Burial in Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling. Visitation from 12:30 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
He was born September 8, 1899 in Whiteside County, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Jacobs May. He married Daisy Dwyer, she died July 2, 1970. Mr. May farmed most of his life in the Prophetstown and rural Sterling area.
Survived by three sisters, Charlotte Baughman of Milledgeville, Esther Eichenberg and Ethel May of Sterling, and several nieces and nephews

MAE E PIERCE MAY
, 86 of Naples FL formerly of Rock Falls and Sterling, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002. Mrs May was born July 1 1915. She married John L Pierce. He preceded her in death. She then married William C May. He preceded her in death. Survivors include four children, T. Sue Stuker, John L Pierce and James H Pierce, all of Naples FL and Linda R Payne of Vero Beach FL; a number of grandchildren, great Grandhcildren and GG Grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley M Koces. Memorial service is at 11 AM Tuesday at Hodges Funeral Chapel, Naples, FL. Creamation rites have been accorded. Burial is at a later date at Oak Knoll Cemetery, Sterling.

THORVILLE D. MAY
, 69, 208 11th Ave., Rock Falls, died Wednesday (7 December 1983) afternoon at Community General Hospital following a long illness.
A memorial service will be Saturday, Dec. 17 at 11 a.m. at the Rock Falls United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carl Zager officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements were completed by the Wheelock Allen Funeral Home, Rock Falls. A memorial has been established to the Heart Fund and the Rock Falls United Methodist Church.
May was born Feb. 20, 1914 in Milan, Mo., the son of William and Nerva Hunsaker May. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Oetzel Jan. 9, 1942 at Tampico. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was retired from Northwestern Steel and Wire Company as a crane operator. He graduated from Milan High School and had attended Kirksville Teachers College. Survivors include his widow, Myrtle; two sons, William, Culver City, Calif., and Robert, DeKalb; two daughters, Mary Lou May, Plano, and Kathryn May, Montgomery; two grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Richard (Ethel) Cook, Sterling.
