WINFIELD S. WILKINSON - At his home in Morrison, August 17, 1893 of Neuralgia of the heart, Winfield S. Wilkinson, aged 80 years, 11 months and 7 days.

The deceased for several years past had been in delicate health, and several weeks before his death was attacked with severe neuralgic pains from which it was supposed he had nearly recovered. In the early morning of Thursday last he had a recurrence of the pains, and the heart becoming implicated he died at 5:20 a.m. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Skinner at the family residence, Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, many friends being present to offer their tribute of respect, interment taking place in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Winfield S. Willkinson was born in Skaneateles, Onondaga county NY Sept 11, 1812. In 1834 he went to Georgetown KY and remained there until 1837 when he came to Jacksonville IL and was employed at that place, and at Springfield, as civil engineer in the service of the State, until October 1839 when he came to Como, Whiteside County IL. He resided in Como until Sept. 1856 when he moved to Sterling and in 1858 upon the removal of the county seat, came to Morrison, he then being county clerk.

Probably no citizen in Whiteside county has ever taken a more active part in its affairs than Mr. Wilkinson. His qualifications for an able and honest discharge of the duties of a public trust, were early recognized and for nearly ... ..

He was one of three selected by the claimants to bid them in and for the lands in Hopkins township he was the only one selected to make the purchases. In 1842 he was elected County Surveyor and held the position five years. In 1844 and while still County Surveyor, the people of WHiteside called upon him to represent them in the General Assembly of the State, which he did, in a creditable manner for a term of two years. When the County Court, which superseded the County Commissioners Court was first organized he was elected one of the associate justices and in 1853 was again elected County Surveyor, holding the position until 1857, when he became County Clerk, the duties of which he conducted with signal ability until 1869. In 1870 upon the adoption of the present Constitution, he was elected a Senator to the General Assembly from the district then comprising the tcounties of Whiteside and Lee, and served a term of two years, during which time he aided materially by his sound judgment, discriminating mind, and close attention to legislative duties, in properly completing the laws of the State so as to make them conform to the newly adopted Constitution. He had also represented the town of Mt. Pleasant in the Board of Supervisors, was for many years Treasurer of that township, and had served as Alderman of the city of Morrison. For several years past he had held responsible position of Prsident of the First National Bank of Morrison.

November 10, 1841 he was united in marriage at Como to Miss Francis Elizabeth Sampson, and together they walked life's pathway for nearly 50 years - until Dec. 12, 1890 when her death occurred. Of four children born to them, three are living - Mrs. C.H. Coggswell of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Alfred E. of Dennison Texas and Henry B. of this city.

The death of such a man as Mr. Wilkinson deserves something more than ordinary mention. But few of our citizens have held so many positions of honor and trust as did he. Nearly 54 years of his life were spent in this county. He was a man who by his sterling worth received from our people every public favor in their power to bestow - a man who never betrayed a trust.

JANE (BLUE) WILSON - At the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. High, in Morrison, Friday morning, June 1, 1894, MRs. Jane Wilson, wife of the late John Wilson, aged 73 years and 2 months.

Jane Blue was born in Nova Scotia April 1, 1821. She was married to John Wilson Nov. 28, 1841, the family of the latter together with her own having come to Illinois in 1839. Mr. Wilson settled at Dent's Grove in Clyde Township, and later moved to another location in the same township where he continued to reside up to the time of his death in 1883.

This has been the home of Mrs. Wilson almost continuously up to about six years ago when she moved to Evanston to make a home for her youngest son Charles, who desired to attend college and fit himself for a minister of the Gospel. Mrs. Wilson remained at Evanston, and about the first of March last was taken sick, and after some weeks, about the 1st of April, came to Morrison where her condition was discovered to be critical, the physician offering no hope of recovery, although her friends seeing her courage and strong self-hood assert itself were led to think she might l ive for some time. While those about her were moved by feelings of alternate hope and fear she was steadfast, nor was her complacency the calm of one who knows not the impending danger; she knew , but felt no anxiety. Nor was her peace the rest of one who would escape from suffering of body or mental anguish by reason of ungrateful children and friends, for she was not called upon to bear severe physical pain, and mental care was softened by the ministrations of her children and her former friends who sought her side to assure her of their abiding love. Besides, the very things for which she had longed and prayed, were granted.

Once she had reason to fear blindness with its attendant trials, but to the end her eyes were undiminished in sight. She wished that she might retain her faculties through sickness to the close of life; this too was granted and a little time before she closed her eyes she responded by a nod to the desire of those about her. She had also wished to see her son through his college course and somewhat established in his ministry; this too was not denied her. And last, there was one deep seated yearning in the mother's heart to see once more for the last time the one son, Thomas, gone so long, and the son came and mother and son looked into each others's eyes and she was satisfied.

The eight surviving children cherish the memory of a devoted mother and feel that while they weep, with her it is well. The qualities which endeared her to all were her broad charity, her common sense, her self-forgetfulness for other's good, and a rarely winning disposition which charmed all who knew her. She did not find fault with her lot, she tried to make the most and best of it, and in toil and thought for others she found her happiness.

The funeral discourse was preached in the M.E. Church in Clyde by Rev. J.A.J. Whipple, pastor of the M.E. church of this city from words she had selected "For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an House not made with hands, eternal in the heavens". The services were at the home of Mrs. Wm. High were conducted by Mr. Whipple adn Rev. J.W. Skinner. Burial was at Clyde.
