EDWARD V. ZAESKER - Funeral services were held Tuesday for Dr. Edward V. Zaeske of 713 Hill Dr., Rock Falls, who passed away suddenly late Saturday night (13 March 1971) at his home. Private services were held for the family at the Allen Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Donald Lyon, pastor of the First Open Bible Church of Rockford, officiating and the Rev. H. C. Hatton, pastor of the First church of Nazarene of Sterling, assisting. The Rev. Robert Parsons sang "Some Golden Daybreak" and was accompanied by Mrs. Roscoe Eades at the organ. The body was then taken to the church and services were held at 2 p.m. with Pastors Lyon and Hatton officiating and Pastor Parsons singing "Great is They Faithfulness" and "We Shall See his Lovely Face" with Mrs. H. C. Hatton accompanying at the organ. Dr. Zaeske was a member of the National Medical Chapter of Phi Rho Sigma, American Medical Association, Illinois Medical Society, Member of the Executive Committee of the Hospital Staff and a staff member of Community General Hospital. Pallbearers were: Honorary, Dr. John McDonnell, Dr. Thomas McDonnell, Dr. Edgar Picken, Dr. Tim Sullivan, Dr. Darroll Erickson and Dr. Leonard Milcarek; active, Dr. Jack Alter, Dr. LaMonte Ballard, Dr. David Burnstine, Dr. Thomas Flynn, Dr. Edward Griffiths and Dr. John Hubbard. Entombment was at the Oak Knoll Memorial Park Mausoleum. Flowers were cared for by Swartleys.

CASSELENE (BEGHTOL) ZANDER , 86, of 404 Badger Ct., Morrison, IL, died Monday, March 26, 2007 at Four Seasons Living Center in Morrison. Casselene was born February 13, 1921, in Industry, IL, to Elbert W. and Blanche W. (Lindsey) Beghtol. She was educated in the Industry grade schools and graduated from Industry High School. She married Victor D. Zander on July 20, 1941, in Palmyra, MO. He died November 26, 2002. Casselene was employed with Climco Coil of Morrison for 21 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Morrison. A memorial has been established by the family. Survivors include two daughters, Vicki (Mrs. Ernie) Carroll and Marsha Zander-Klopf, both of Morrison; two granddaughters, Stacey Southern and Stephanie Becker, both of Morrison; five great grandchildren, Cody Southern and Kortnie Corbin; Nicholas, Kayli and Kelsey Becker; one sister, Mrs. Patricia Ann Baker of Pekin, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor; one daughter, Michele Van Lerberghe; one brother, Elbert Wayne Beghtol.

JOHN LEONARD ZENT , aged 84 years, 11 months and 13 days, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Sunday at his home near Palestine. He had been in poor health for about eight years and death came as a result of complications and old age. The deceased was born in Whiteside county, Illinois November 2, 1859, and came to this county at an early age. He spent the rest of his life in the Palestine community and lived for a number of years on the farm home where he died. He was married to Orpha Anderson 63 years ago. He was a member of the Christian church at Palestine. Surviving besides the widow is a son, Lloyd Zent, of west of Mentone; one daughter, Mrs. Frank R. Ladd, Warsaw; three grandsons, John Ladd, in the armed forces in England, Earl Zent of Mentone and Orton Zent of Tippecanoe; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, and one sister. A daughter, Jessie, preceded her father in death 23 years ago. Funeral services were held at the Palestine Christian church Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock with Rev. Avery Miley, pastor of the Warsaw Christian church, officiating. Burial was in the Palestine cemetery, with the Reed funeral home of Mentone in charge.

ROY Z. ZENTZ , 51, of 400 Haskell Ave., Rock Falls, died Wednesday evening (17 Dec. 1975) at the Sterling Care Center following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 1:30 p.m. at the Melvin Funeral Home. The Rev. David F. Davis, pastor of the Assembly of God Church of Rock Falls, will officiate. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Rock Falls. Roy Z. Zentz was born Dec. 25, 1923, the son of Irvin and Leona Springer Zentz. He lived in this area most of his life. Surviving are his mother, Leona Zentz of Rock Falls; three daughters, Mrs. Gary (Lucia) Brown of Sterling, Mrs. Linda Beltz of LaGrange and Ronda Zentz of Rock Island; four grandchildren; one brother, Ray Zentz of Moline; and four sisters, Mrs. Mervin (Carrie) Argraves of Sterling, Mrs. Howard (Helen) Toms of Ventura, Calif., Mrs. Howard (Lavonne) Blanton of Tampico and Mrs. Don (Mildred ) Blair of New Lennox. He was preceded in death by his father, one brother and two sisters.

BETTY (ESHELMAN) ZIGLER , 62, of 1400 W. 2nd Street in Rock Falls died Saturday at Community General Hospital following a long illness. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Melvin-Schilling Funeral Home in Sterling with Rev. Carl J. Zager, pastor of the Rock Falls United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Visitation will be today from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to the King's Daughters. Mrs. Zigler was born on April 1, 1924 in Sterling, the daughter of Earl and Retal Oliver Eshleman. On Sept. 16, 1944 she was united in marraige to Ralph Zigler in New Orleans, La. The deceased was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and had been a member of the King's Daughters of Rock Falls and the NU Club of Rock Falls. Survivors include her husband, Ralph; two sons, Robert D. Zigler of Rock Falls and Thomas E. Zigler of Rock Falls; one brother, James Eshelman of Rock Falls; one sister, Beatrice Kradle of Madison, Wis.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

GEORGE H. ZIEGLER , 79, 921 7th Ave., Fulton, died Sunday in the Morrison Skilled Care Unit. Private family services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Bosma Funeral Home, Fulton. The Rev. James Sprinkel, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, Fulton, will officiate. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to the Riverbend Ambulance Associaton. George Ziegler was born on Jan. 13, 1904 in Luana, Iowa, the son of George and Dorthea Maack Ziegler Sr. On Feb 14, 1924 he married Clara Nelson in Clermont, Ia. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League, Clinton, Ia., the Fulton Sportsman Club, and the Iron Workers Local 111, Rock Island. Surviving are his wife, Clara, two daughters, Mrs. James Carole Damhoff, Fulton, and Mrs. Robert (Jerri) Klavenga, Fulton; two sons, George Jr., Fulton and Robert, Albany, 10 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two sisters Mrs. Hanry Mueller, Monona Ia., and Mrs. Francis Donnery, Ida Grove, Ia., and two brothers, Webber, Buttenberg, Ia., and Charles, Luna, Ia. He was preceded in death by his parents.

PHILLIP M. ZIGLER , 63, of Tampico, died Monday, August 28, 2006, at his home after an extended illness. He was a welder and worked salvage for many years with his father. Mr. Zigler was born February 7, 1943, in Sterling, the son of Philip M. and Betty Jane (Aument) Zigler, Sr. Survivors include three sons, Philip Zigler of Centralia, Jody (Kenjala) Zigler of Mustang, OK and Russell Zigler of FL; his mother of Rock Falls; two sisters, Sandy Thrower of Sterling and Judy (Rick) Hurless of Rock Falls; four brothers, Gary (Joan) Zigler of Pensacola, FL, Rick (Marge) Zigler of Tampico, David Zigler of Mount Morris and Dale Zigler of Rock Falls; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father. Cremation rites were accorded.

NELLIE E. (COATS) ZIGLER , 106, formerly of Sterling, died Wednesday, November 08, 2006 at Four Seasons Living Center, Morrison. She was a sales clerk for many years at Lil Mar in Sterling. Nellie was born March 27, 1900 in Sterling, the daughter of James and Grace (Pratt) Coats. She married Russell C. Zigler in February of 1920. He died May 30, 1972. Survivors are two daughters, Phyllis (Dean) Powers of Harmon, Kay Thayer of Sterling; three sons, Merle “Barney” (June) Zigler of Marion, MI, Bob Zigler of Hooppole, Mike (Bev) Zigler of Sterling; a daughter-in-law, Betty Zigler of Sterling; 23 grandchildren; many, many great-grandchildren; and many great-great grandchildren She was preceded in death by three sisters, a daughter, Bev Longanecker and a son, Norval Zigler. Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, November 11, 2006 at Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling with Reverend Russell Coats officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 PM, Friday, November 10th at the Funeral Home.

Dr. SAMUEL HORNING ZIEGLER , 67, professor of education at Cedar Crest College and a native of Whiteside County IL. died here yesterday (Allentown PA). Survivors include his widow Sadie Florence Brownmiller Ziegler; two sons, Frederick E., Trevose PA., and Harold J. of the Blackburn college facility in Carlinville, Ill. and his 91 year old mother of Collegeville, PA.

KATHRYN (ANDERSON) ZIMMERMAN , 70, of 827 – 5th Avenue South, Clinton, IA, died Monday, April 25, 2005 at Harbor Crest Nursing Home in Fulton, IL. Kathryn was born June 24, 1934, in Red Oak, IA, to Reuben and Irene (Pearson) Anderson. She was a graduate of Red Oak High School and received her Bachelor's Degree from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. She married James H. Zimmerman on August 3, 1957 in Red Oak. She was employed as a teacher and librarian at Fulton High School in Fulton, IL for 26 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Clinton where she served as Sunday School Superintendent and served in many leadership roles in the Iowa Synod of the E.L.C.A. She volunteered for Mercy Medical System in Clinton and was a member and past president of Mercy Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband Jim; two sisters-in-law, Barbara (Mrs. Harold) Williams of Lockport, IL and Marilee (Mrs. Dale) Vonderheide of Pekin, IL; two brothers-in-law, Wayne (Bonna) Zimmerman of Metamora, IL and Glenn Zimmerman of Pekin, IL; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

ANNA KATHRINNE (ZINSER) ZINSER , 81, died at 7 p.m. Saturday night at her home in Prophetstown of a heart attack. She had been in ill health the past four years. She was the former Anna Kathrine Zinser, daughter of Jacob and Anna Bleiler Zinser, born Aug. 4, 1874, in Belvidere, Ill. The family moved to Monroe, Wis., and on Jan. 29, 1895, she was married to William P. Zinser at Hooppole, Ill. They farmed in the Hooppole vicinity until 1911 when they moved to a farm near Rock Falls, Ill. Mr. Zinser died there in 1927. His wife and a son, Milton, continued the farm operations until 1940. They then retired to Prophetstown. Surviving are two sons, Emergy G. Zinser, Elmhurst, Ill., and Milton at the Prophetstown home; one sister, Mrs. Marie Ringel, Paw Paw, Mich., and a grandson, Gordon Zinser. Two brothers, Fred and William Zinser, both of Monroe, Wis., and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Hovan, Milwaukee, preceded her in death. Mrs. Zinser attended the Trinity Evangelical United Brethren Church in Sterling, Ill., and was a member of King's Daughters at Rock Falls. Services were held in Monroe, Wis., Tuesday afternoon in the Stuessy Funeral Home with Rev. E. J. Larson, pastor of the EUB Church at Sterling, officiating. CLARENCE LEAMON ZSCHIESCHE , 64, died Tuesday morning in the Morrison Community Hospital. Clarence Zschiesche was born March 23, 1899, the son of Lewis and Anna Zschiesche, in Prophetstown. He was educated in Leon schools. He married Lilly Erickson on Jan. 12, 1927 in Prophetstown. He was a member of the Congregational Church.Surviving are his wife, two sons, Robert, Greenboro, N.C., and Gordon, United States Air For ce, Madison, Wis.; a daughter, Mrs. Noah (Beverly) Germie, Tampico and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one grandchild. Funeral services will be held Thursday t 3 p.m. in the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Nelson Chasteen, officiating. Services at the Wheellock-Allen Funeral Home were conducted by Rev. David Beebe, pastor of the First Christian Church of Rock Falls and burial was in Oak Knoll Cemetery. Mrs. Wayne E. On Sept. 20, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mary Murphy in Galesburg. Following marriage he moved to Morrison, where he was employed at General Electric for over 25 years. The deceased was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Morrison, a past member of Dunlap Lodge 321 AF & AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies Moline Consistory, the Tebala Temple of Rockford and Primrose Chapter OES. Survivors include his wife, Mary; three sons, Dale of Cincinnati, Ohio, Greg of Homewood and Richard of Gillette, Wyo.; also two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

FRANK R. ZUIDEMA , 90, of Harbor Crest Nursing Home, Fulton, died Monday, May 12, 2003, at the nursing home. He farmed in Prophetstown, Ustick, Garden Plain and York townships and the Thomson area for many years. He then owned and operated Miles Locker, Miles, Iowa, was a partner at Fulton Locker and was employed by Millview Feed, Morrison. Mr. Zuidema was born March 27, 1913, in Prophetstown, the son of Cornelius and Anna (Stuart) Zuidema. He attended Spring Valley and Otter Bluff grade schools. He married Helen Balk on June 22, 1935, in Fulton. She died in April 1957. He then married Gwendolyn Robertson-Houzenga on May 13, 1960, in Fulton. She died Nov. 13, 2000. He was a member of First Reformed Church, Fulton, and a former member of Spring Valley Reformed Church. He enjoyed fishing and bowling. Survivors include two daughters, Corliss (Donald) Venema of Morrison and Doris (Donald) Swanson of Mount Carroll; two sons, Robert E. (Ardith) Zuidema of Morrison and Daniel (Valerie) Zuidema of Fulton; a stepdaughter, Sheryl (Larry) Huizenga of Fulton; three sisters, Ivy Arians of Sterling, Lavisa Boss of Jenison, Mich., and Grace (Arnold) Hartman of Fulton; 17 grandchildren; five stepgrand-children; 29 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and a step-great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Rebecca Zuidema and Patricia Witt-Rus; a son, Frank Zuidema Jr.; a stepson, Robert Houzenga; and two brothers, Nicholas Zuidema and George Zuidema. GEORGE ZUIDEMA , 69, a long time resident of Morrison [IL] died at his home at 209 South Genesee Street, Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock after a 19 months illness. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock this after noon at Reynolds Funeral Home with the Rev. Harry L. Brower officiating. Burial was in Grove Hill Cemetery Morrison. George Zuidema, the son of Nickolas and Anna (Bos) Zuidema, was born November 14, 1978 in Michigan, where he received his early education. He was married to May Van Dyke January 30, 1902 in Morrison. Mr. Zuidema is survived by his wife; three sons, Joe Zuidema, Donald Zuidema, both of Morrison, and Marvin Zuidema of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Five grandchildren and one great grandchild; five brothers, Peter Zuidema of Florida, Henry, Marian [Marion?] and Nick Zuidema of Morrison and Correal Zuidema of Fulton IL; Four sisters, Mrs. Martin DeGroot, and Mrs. Fred Dykama, both of Morrison, and Anna Pyse of Sterling [IL], and Mrs. Margaret Schwandt of Chicago [IL]. He is preceded in death by his parents and (?) brothers.

GRACE (NORMAN) ZUIDEMA , 76, of 519 Barden St., Morrison, died Jan. 13, 1993, at Samaritan Hospital South, Clinton, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ebenezer Reformed Church, Morrison, preceded by a 10:15 a.m. family prayer service at the church. Burial will be at Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. A memorial has been established. Mrs. Zuidema was born Jan. 23, 1916, in Fulton, the daughter of Claus and Winnie (Londo) Norman. She was educated in rural Whiteside County schools. She married Glenn N. Zuidema Nov. 5, 1936, in Fenton. She worked as a waitress at the former Ice Box Restaurant in Morrison. She later was employed as an inspector by General Electric in Morrison for 11 years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison, the church's Ladies Aid Society, and the Quilters Circle. She was a member of the Clyde Neighborhood Cluib. She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Lyle (Pat) Stoecker of Morrison; three sons, Gerald and Ronald Zuidema, both of Morrison, and James G. Zuidema of Moline; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Ben (Corabello) Tegeler and Mrs. John (Alberta) Vegter, both of Fulton, and Mrs. Clarence (Dorothy) Tegeler of Morrison; and one brother, Elvin Norman of Erie. She was preceded in death by one great-grandchild and twin sisters, in infancy.

She was a member of the Ebenezer Reformed Church, the Ladies Aid, Lydian Society, Resthave Nursing home Auxiliary and Morrison Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors incluide her husband, two sons, Robert Zuidema, and Warren Zuidema, both of Morrison; two daughters, Mrs. Don (Geraldine) Damhoff and Mrs. Barny (Dorothy) Vos, both of Morrison; four sisters, Mrs. Henry Stuart and Mrs. Rena Doorenbos, both of Morrison, Mrs. Ann Bultema and Miss Jeannette Rose, both of Wimbledon, N.Dak.; two brothers, Herman Rose and Peter Rose, both of Wimbledon, N. Dak.; 15 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents, two brothers and one grandson. A memorial has been established for the Heart Fund.

KATIE ZUIDEMA , 17, of 13507 Bunker Hill Road, Morrison, IL, died Wednesday, September 13, 2006 as the result of an automobile accident. Katie was born May 16, 1989, in Clinton, IA to Mike and Dawn (Zuidema) Zuidema. She was a senior at Morrison High School and worked part-time at the Isle of Rhodes Restaurant in Morrison. Katie was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison. She was active in the Whiteside County 4-H Club and volunteered for many activities within 4-H. She was a counselor and staff member at Camp White Eagle in Leaf River, IL. Survivors include her parents, Mike and Dawn of Morrison; two sisters, Tessa (Matthew Jones) Zuidema of Holmdel, NJ and Jessie Zuidema of Morrison; grandparents, Donald and Irene Dyke and Agnes Zuidema, all of Morrison; one nephew, Jalen Jones; several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by two grandfathers, Elmer Zuidema and Warren E. Zuidema.





LAVERNE ZUIDEMA , 54, of RR2, Fulton, died Saturday at Mercy Hospital, Clinton, Iowa. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma Funeral Home with the Rev. Rodger Dalman, pastor of the First Reformed Church of Fulton, officiating. Burial will be in the Fulton Cemetery. Cemetery military rites will be performed by the Fulton American Legion and the Fulton VFW Posts. Visitation is from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Zuidema was born May 17, 1926 in Albany, the son of John and Bessie Dyke Zuidema. He was a member of Futon Post 402, American Legion, the Fulton VFW Post 4044, the First Reformed Church of Fulton and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Clinton, Iowa. He is survived by his father, John of Fulton; two sisters, Mrs. Janet Darling of Fulton, and Mrs. George (Ruth) Whitemore of Morrison and one brother, Harvey of Fulton. He was preceded in death by his mother and three brothers.

MABLE (WHITTINGTON) ZUIDEMA , 72, of 17788 Bunker Hill Road, Morrison, IL, died Saturday, January 7, 2006 at her home. Mabel was born May 31, 1933 in Hooppole, IL, to Harley and Mildred (Elgin) Whittington. She attended the Hooppole, IL grade school and Morrison, IL high school. Mabel married Arnold "Arkie" Zuidema on October 27, 1950 in Morrison, IL. He died May 14, 1997. She was employed with General Electric in Morrison until 1977. She later owned and operated "The Place" in Morrison. Survivors include two sons, Roger Zuidema of Morrison, IL and Denis (Millie) Zuidema of Clinton, IA; three grandchildren, Cody Zuidema, Lindsay Zuidema, and Jason Zuidema; one great grandchild, Jack Zuidema. She was preceded in death by two sons, Arnold, Jr. and Gary Zuidema; two sisters, Helen Francis and Alice Noble; and one brother in infancy.

MARJORIE R. (TICHLER) ZUIDEMA , 79, of Morrison, died Tuesday at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Morrison. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison preceded by a 10:15 a.m. family prayer service at the church. Calvin J. Rynbrandt, pastor of Ebenezer Reformed, will be officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison. Pallbearers will be Larry Brackemyer, Edward Brondyke, Jon Brondyke, Marvin Tichler, Vernon Tichler and Dale Sterenberg. She was born Aug. 24, 1924, in Morrison to Ralph and Mary Vos Tichler. She attended Morrison grade schools and graduated from Morrison High School in 1942. She married Robert M. Zuidema on Feb. 21, 1945, in Morrison. He died in 2004. She was employed as a secretary with the Savanna (Ill.) Army Depot. She later farmed with her husband in rural Morrison. She was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church and the church's Ladies Aid Society. She was secretary of the Morrison Community Hospital Women's Auxiliary and also served as a hospital pink lady volunteer. Survivors include three sons, James L. Zuidema and Phyllis Hagemann of Byron, Ill., Stephen R. (Judi) Zuidema of Morrison and Randy D. Zuidema and Nancy Seyller of Morrison; one granddaughter; two stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Maxine (Paul) Brondyke of Morrison.

NICHOLAS ZUIDEMA - Funeral services for the late Nicholas Zuidema were held Saturday afternoon at the home and later the funeral cortege went to Erie, where services were held in the First Baptist church, the Rev. Mimmer officiating. Mr. Zuidema was born 26 years ago in Prophetstown,the son of Mr. and Mrs. Corneal Zuidema, now of Ustick. He was married to Miss Skags of Erie, who, with two daughters, Ruth Evelyn and Marjorie, survives. He is also survived by his parents, two brothers, George and Frank, at home and three sisters, Grace and Mrs. John Vos at home, and Mrs. Fred Ahrens of Fulton. The deceased met his death last Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock when the Chevrolet coach he was driving was hit by a westbound freight train at Bluff tower crossing. He was returning from Morrison where he had been transacting business, and was traveling north on Bluff road toward his home. His body was hurled thirty or forty feet away and the auto was dragged a short ways down the tracks. The automobile was a complete wreck and the victims body was badly cut and torn.

NICHOLAS ZUIDEMA was found dead in bed at his home west of Unionville on the Garden Plain road Sunday morning (17 Oct. 1948) by his brother Henry, and his nephew, Allan DeGroot. It is thought he died Wednesday evening shortly after retiring. It had been his custom to bring eggs and butter in from the farm to his sister, Mrs. Martin DeGroot on Thursdays, and when he did not bring any in this week she was concerned about him. On Saturday she sent her son Allan out to look for his uncle, but did not see him. Sunday morning Allan went to the home of his uncle, Henry Zuidema, and together they went to Nick's home. The house was locked, but they gained entrance through the cellar door. They found Mr. Zuidema dead in bed. An inquest was conducted by Coroner C. M. Frye of Rock Falls Sunday evening at 7 p.m. The two men told of finding Mr. Zuidema and of calling Sheriff Boyd Kimmel to the residence. The coroner's jury found that death was due to natural causes. Serving on the jury were Glenn Craddock, foreman, George Curtis, Clifford Alldritt, Russell Edlund, Rensis Dyke and Bob Heusinkveld.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Reynolds funeral home. Burial will be in Grove Hill cemetery. Mr. Zuidema was born Aug. 31, 1887 in Ottawa county, Mich., the son of Nicholas and Anna Zuidema. In 1900 he came to Illinois with his parents. His brother Henry came to this community shortly before. Nick worked on farms and for a while operated a taxi cab in Chicago. He opened Nick's Cigar store in Morrison which he operated for about eight years. He retired about three years ago to the residence with 10 acres of land where he was found dead. He was married five years ago to Pauline Halliday who died about two years later. He is survived by the following brothers and sisters, Henry and Marion of Morrison, Cornelius of Fulton, and Peter of Barrington, Fla., Mrs. Martin DeGroot and Mrs. Fred Dykema of Morrison, Mrs. Robert Swandt of Chicago, and Mrs. Anna Pyse of Sterling. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and three brothers, George and Simon and another brother named Simon who died while small. He is also survived by three stepdaughters, Mary Alice, Madonna and Jewel Halliday who are being notified of his death.

At the inquest, Sheriff Kimmel testified to being called to the Zuidema home about 8:30 p.m. by Allan DeGroot. He went upstairs into the bedroom on the south side of the house and there Mr. Zuidema was lying dead. Mr. Zuidema was lying face down on the bed dressed in a sleeping shirt. The bedding was undistrubed, indicating that he had apparently just gone to bed and passed away in his sleep. Mr. Kimmel said he must have been dead for some time. There were no marks of violence. In his opinion he said death was caused by natural causes. Wednesday evening's paper was in the house, but the later ones were outside.

ORVILLE ZUIDEMA , 89, of Morrison, died Monday at Morrison Community Hospital. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel Swinson, pastor of the Morrison United Methodist Church, will be officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday. Burial of cremains will be in the Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison.

He was born Nov. 3, 1914, in Morrison to Marion and Grace Port Zuidema. He was educated in the Lyndon, Ill., grade schools and attended Lyndon High School. He married Wilma M. Null on Jan. 15, 1944, in Oakland, Calif. She died in 1995. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was employed with the Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. in Sterling, Ill., for 43 years. Prior to that he was employed with Rich's Toy Manufacturing in Morrison. He was a member of the Morrison United Methodist Church and the American Legion, Morrison Post 328.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Nancy (Ron) Geguzys of Granger, Ind., Mrs. Barbara (Dr. Robert) Hahn of Morrison and Mrs. Pat (Howard) Mills of Morrison; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Eleanor (Jack) Swanson of Morrison. He was preceded in death by his wife, one sister and two brothers.

ROELVINA (SHIPMAN) ZUIDEMA , 92, of Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan Center in Prophetstown, Illinois died Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center. Roelvina was born on November 8, 1915 in Morrison, Illinois to Louis and Reake (Brackemeyer) Shipma. She attended Morrison grade schools and graduated from Morrison High School in 1933. She married Harold Zuidema on September 12, 1935 in Morrison, Illinois. Roelvina and Harold farmed in the Morrison area for 46 years until their retirement. Roelvina was a life-long member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison, IL where she was active in the Lydian Society. She was also a 4-H leader and she enjoyed sewing and cooking. Survivors include one daughter, Jane (Mrs. Arnold) Brooks of Prophetstown, IL; one son, Allen (Carol) Zuidema of Argyle, WI; seven grandchildren, Joy (David) Lee, Kristy (Jeffrey) Zwicker, Kathy (Todd) Wirtz, William (Lynn) Zuidema, Elizabeth (Clint) Lechner, Deborah (Chris) Bostak, Jeff (Mechelle) Brooks; thirteen great grandchildren, Corey Lee, Daniel Lee, Matthew (Meghan) McKenna, Kyle Zwicker, Katie Zwicker, Melissa (James Bridges) Wirtz, Michelle Wirtz, TJ Wirtz, Mitchell Zuidema, Sam Bostak, Max Bostak, Emily Brooks, Ella Brooks; two great great grandchildren, Alexis Bridges, Caleb McKenna. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold.

WILLARD ZUIDEMA , 63, 405 S. Jackson Street, Morrison, died December 17, 1982 in Morrison Community Hospital. Funeral services were held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Backaus officiating. Burial was in the Grove Hill Cemetery. Mr. Zuidema was born November 21, 1919 in Union Grove Township the son of Simon and Jennie (Balk) Zuidema. He was raised in Union Grove Township and married Erma Landheer March 4, 1942 in Hopkins Township. The couple farmed in the Union Grove Township until retiring to Morrison in 1980. He also worked with Hubert Londo Trucking for the past 10 years and was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, Erma; one daughter, Mrs. James (Diane) Thyne, Clinton, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. Ruth (Fay) Potter, Rockford; Mrs. June (George) Brems, Moline; and Mrs. Marlyn (Mary) Faber, Fulton; three brothers, Glenn and Arnold, both of Morrison; and Vernon, Fulton; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, three brothers, and one sister.

BETTY L. (BRANDT) ZWER , 76, of Rock Island died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at her home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, where a Christian wake service will be held at 6:30. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. The former Betty L. Brandt was born July 31, 1929, in Lyndon, the daughter of Henry G. and Agnes Marie (Wingerd) Brandt Sr. She married Mitchell L. "Mike" Zwer on Oct. 21, 1949, in Rock Island. He died April 22, 1995. Betty graduated from the former St. Joseph High School, Rock Island, in 1948. She retired from Illinois Bell Telephone, where she worked for a number of years. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society. Betty also was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and was a volunteer with its talking-book program. She was a volunteer telephone operator for the John Deere Classic for a number of years. Betty was an avid golfer and a member of the Indian Bluff Ladies League. She especially enjoyed spending time with her friends and grandchildren. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Susan Zwer, Orlando, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela Zwer and Michael Touchette, Adelaide, South Australia; grandchildren, Seth, Abby and Tessa Touchette, South Australia; brother, Charles Brandt and his wife Patricia, Milan; and a number of nieces and nephews.
