Family Reunion 19 July 1943

Descendants of Stephen and Marena Sherwood gathered for their eighth annual reunion in Lawrence park Sunday [07/18/1943] and enjoyed a chicken dinner. This is one of the older Whiteside county families. Mr. Sherwood, the headright, was born ner Peekskill, Westchester county, N. Y., and came to Illinois as a young man. He married Miss Marena Harrison, a daughter of Mark and Mary Harrison of Sterling. The wedding took place in Sterling on May 31, 1855. Rev. Mr. Stebbins, pastor of the Sterling Presbyterian church performing the ceremony. The couple settled in Genesee township on a farm.

There were 35 members of the family present and one visitor. Mrs. Clara Howe of Morrison, and Mrs. Phoebe Knox of Milledgeville were present and they are the last two surviving daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood. Mrs. Howe is past 70 and Mrs. Knox is 80 years of age.

Those present were Mr. and Mrs. William Hyer and children, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Nelson, Mrs. Amber Baresma and daughter, Mrs. Lula Port and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Howe and daughters, all of Morrison, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Engelkins and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. John Linker and children and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Olson of Sterling, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Meenen of Rock Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Rhode of Coleta, Mr. and Mrs. F. Sibigtroth and children, Barbara and Bobbie, of Chicago, Miss Doris Bowers and Mrs. Nellie Rickett of Milledgeville.

Marriages in the family since the last reunion were those of Verna Olson to Lester Hays and Russell Allen to Anna Rose Van Hoe. The births in the family were a son, Larry Eugene, to Mr. and Mrs. Orville Geesey of Sterling; a son, Donald Lee, to Mr. and Mrs. Leslie McGowan of Morrison; a daughter, Donna Jean, to Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Knox of Sterling; a daughter, Elaine Kay, to Mr. and Mrs. Harley Wayne Brown of Woodward, Okla.; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Edward D. Wolf of Woodward, Okla.; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lyle of Sioux City, Ia.

Five young men of the family are now serving in the armed forces—Charles Howe, son of Mrs. Clara Howe; Donald and Eugene Knox, and Edward D. Wolf, grandsons of Mrs. Phoebe Knox; and Russell Olson, grandson of Mrs. Clara Howe.
