VINDICATION--We deem it our duty to speak a word for Mr. A.G. SHEPPARD, this week, whose character has been so basely assailed by the circulation of a report charging him with having had criminal connection with a young lady of Carbondale, named COOPER. It is palpably plain that the report never had the shadow of a foundation, and that the fabrication was circulated for the sole purpose of blackmailing Mr. SHEPPARD, throwing a stain upon his character, as a speculation for the villain, ANDERSON. The Murphysboro Independent, the paper in which the report was first given publicity, comes out right side up, and gives the following:Mr. A.G. SHEPPARD who by the circulation of the scandal, has, for the first time in his life, had his name connected with a matter of an unquestionable character, is a highly respected citizen, enjoying a reputation in a large circle of acquaintances, as an upright, moral, Christian gentleman, and a good citizen and by malicious falsehood, manufactured by a villain who has taken this method to blackmail Mr. SHEPPARD into forcing the girl, COOPER, to accept him. Our correspondent was only giving publicity to what had got to be current on the streets, and it is hoped that the smothering fires that have been fanned into flames by this little reference, may burn every vestige of doubt that may entertained by the public in regard to Mr. SHEPPARD. All who know him believe with us that he and the girl, COOPER, are innocent.

He was born in Tennessee, moved to this state about twenty years ago, had been living in this county about eleven years, was beloved by all who knew him. Once of our best citizens is gone, and we feel all will regret his loss. Brother CARTER made a profession of religion about twenty three years ago and was baptized into the fellowship of the Baptist church in Nashville, Tennessee, twenty-two years ago, lived an exemplary life, was a model christian. At the time of his death was a member of the Baptist church in this place. The church has lost one of her most faithful members. Brother CARTER lingered a long time; his death was not unexpected. He had not been out of the house but once in nine months, and the most of the time could only set up a few moments at a time, but he patiently waited and bore his sufferings till the Lord should see fit to call him, and died in the full assurance of eternal happiness. He leaves a wife and eight children and a host of friends to mourn his loss. Peace be to him. John A. RODMAN.

Egypt has become a noted point and our Massachusetts friends says of us, in the Springfield (Mass) Republican: There is a plain case of federal interference, with troops, in a sister State. We do not now refer to Louisiana, or South Carolina, or Tennessee, or Kentucky. It is a state north of the mystic Mason and Dixon, which demands present attention, to wit, Illinois; where, in Anna and Randolph and Williamson counties, we are told, the kuklux are rampaging in the most approved fashion. Citizens are warned to send their negro employees out of the neighborhood, on penalty of unstated consequences. Negros who decline to obey notice to quite are taken by night and flogged. In some quarters assassination is becoming nearly a daily pastime, and no one is punished for it. And yet we don not notice any proclamation, any calling out of the malitia, from Gov. BEVERIDGE.
