Introduction

In about 1650, Daniel Davison emigrated from Scotland to Massachusetts. He was the second Davison to come to the Colonies; the first being Nicholas Davison of London, England, who, in 1639, became the on-site agent for Mathew Cradock, the first governor of Massachusetts. The Daniel Davison lineage, however, soon produced the largest Davison family tree in North America, if not the world.

This report covers just one branch of the Daniel Davison family tree starting with his fourth great-grandson, Prosper Harvey Davison (1833-1903), and then branching out through Prosper's third great-grandchildren spanning five full generations. The text portion of this report is the genealogical record of Prosper Harvey and Jane File Davison's descendants ... with most emphasis on those with ties (birth, residence or death) to the Davison family homesteads at or near Yankeetown or Minonk in north central Illinois. The text is followed by a multi-page, "outline descendant tree," which is a condensed representation of the usual graphical family tree format.

There are two acronyms used in this report that may need explanation: MNU means "maiden name unknown," and FNU means "first name unknown." Also, the small superscript numbers attached to names represent the generations removed from Daniel1 Davison.

1. PROSPER HARVEY7 DAVISON (JOHN MILTON6, EZRA5, ASA4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, DANIEL1) was born August 26, 1833 in Grafton, NY, and died September 13, 1903 in Yankeetown, IL. He married JANE C. FILE September 02, 1854 in Brunswick, Rensselaer County, NY. She was born April 15, 1832 in Rensselaer County, NY, and died December 22, 1904 in Yankeetown, IL.

Notes for PROSPER HARVEY DAVISON:

Prosper Harvey Davison's Obituary, from Minonk News-Dispatch, September 17, 1903:

Prosper H. Davison was born in Grafton, Rensselaer Co., N. Y., Aug. 25, 1833. He was a son of John M. and Sally Davison. He was reared to manhood in his native county, receiving a substantial education in the public schools. On Sept. 2, 1854, he was united in marriage with Miss Jane C. File. Seven children were born to them - Addie, who died at age of 6 years; Franc D., wife of Harrison Kerrick, who resides near Lone Tree, Mo.; William S., of Clayton tp.; J. Morgan, of Kansas City, Mo.; Paul H., of Clayton tp.; Elsie J., wife of R. M. Livingston, of this city; and Bertha, at home.

In 1855 Mr. Davison came to Illinois, locating in Clayton township, in Woodford county, where he resided until 1887, when he moved to Eureka, having been elected county treasurer in 1886. He lived there until 1889, when he moved to Metamora. After his term of office expired, he returned to his farm in Clayton township, living there until last fall, when he came to Minonk, occupying the handsome property he had purchased from J. H. Golden. During the winter, he had a severe attack of lagrippe, from which he never fully recovered. He went to Excelsior Springs, Mo., this summer and remained several weeks in the hope of regaining his strength, but gradually grew weaker. He never gave up or consented to take his bed until a little over a week ago. Shortly afterward he became unconscious and lingered until Sunday,September 13, when he peacefully passed away from earthly care at 11 o'clock a.m.

The deceased prospered in his agricultural pursuits and accumulated a handsome property, including 720 acres of land in Clayton township. At an early age he joined the Meridian Baptist church and has always been a leader in the social and moral elevation of the community in which he lived. He was a Democrat, politically, having cast his first vote for James Buchanan for President. For twenty years he served as treasurer of Clayton township. He was also a member of the Board of Supervisors, and while a member of that body was appointed county treasurer to fill the vacancy caused by the defalcation of Ayers Whitaker, who was treasurer at that time.

He has been a progressive, public-spirited citizen in all things, and especially pertaining to the upbuilding of good homes. He assisted in the organization of the First State Bank of Benson, Jan. 1, 1900, and has ever since served as its Vice President, his exceptional financial talent, sagacity and foresight greatly aiding in the success of that financial institution.

Fraternally, he was a member of Minonk Lodge No. 927, I.O.O.F. His presence was a benediction to all with whom he came in contact, kind and gentle in his ways and speech, could not but spread joy and sunshine into the hearts and lives of all.

The funeral services were held from the house at 10 o'clock a.m., Tuesday , September 15, 1903. Rev. Robert Wallace of Minonk, assisted by Rev. F. M. Johnson of Benson, conducted the services. Interment was in the Davison cemetery seven miles west of this city. The pallbearers were Charles Fuller, Fred Holmes, Josiah Kerrick, Jos. Stoneman, Charles Ridge and George Defries.

Notes for PAUL HARVEY DAVISON:

Before rural mail delivery, the Davison homestead near Minonk was the designated as the Yankeetown, IL, post office. Paul H. Davison was the postmaster for several years. Hence, the area in and around the homestead, including the nearby Davison Cemetery, was called Yankeetown.

Obituary of Paul Harvey Davison, from Minonk News-Dispatch, April 9, 1953:

Paul Harvey Davison, 86, a life-long resident of this community, passed away on Monday, April 6, at Washburn, where he had recently been removed for care during the last few days of his life.

Born at Yankeetown on Feb. 19, 1867, he was a son of Prosper Harvey and Jane C. File Davison. His father was one of the early pioneers of this area, who came to Illinois from New York State when a young man, and purchased land from the U. S. Government 99 years ago, in 1854. It was on this farm, five miles west of Minonk, where the deceased spent most of his life.

He received his early education at the Jefferson school, built in 1869, and attended Eureka college one year. He was united in marriage with Bertha Trullender at Yankeetown, on Feb. 27, 1895. She preceded him in death on July 18, 1937.

Mr. Davison lived a full and active life as son of a pioneer, as husband and father, as a farmer and business man, and in politics, civic, social and church affairs.

During his early years the mail was carried to the Davison home, which was designated as Yankeetown post office, to be picked up there by others in the area. As a young man, he held the post of Yankeetown postmaster for 15 years, until rural mail carrier routes were established, which eliminated that neighborhood post office.

He also served as a school director for the Jefferson school for 25 years. That school served as a community center and as a church, with a Baptist minister supplied from Benson, for a number of years. Mr. Davison was clerk of the board, and was a very active member of the church, too.

His main interest in life was farming, and he continued to reside on the Davison farm while for eight years he was a partner with his brother in law, R. M. Livingston, in the ownership and operation of the Davison and Livingston elevator in Toluca. Later, those partners purchased the International Harvester dealership in Minonk, and after operating it for two years, sold out to Frank B. Iliff of this city.

Mr. Davison was a strong believer in farm organization, and in his early years was a member of the old Farmers' Alliance. He helped organize the Woodford County Farm Bureau, was a charter member, and served as an officer in the early days of that organization.

He and Mrs. Davison moved to Minonk in the spring of 1922, and he has lived here ever since, except for one 4-year period when he served as Woodford county treasurer and lived at Eureka. Always an active member of the Democratic party, Mr. Davison was elected county treasurer in November of 1930. His term expired in 1934.

Mr. and Mrs. Davison were the parents of six children, three of whom survive: Victor H. Davison of Indianapolis, Ind.; Paul Howard Davison of Columbus, Ohio; and Lester S. Davison, who recently moved to Minonk from the home farm, now operated by his son, John Davison. Three daughters preceded their parents in death: Margaret (Mrs. Paul J. Snyder), who died in 1935; Annie Laurie, who died at the age of 10; and Bessie, who died in infancy.

Mr. Davison is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Bertha Swing of Riverside, Calif., nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and a large number of nieces and nephews, besides a host of friends who mourn his passing.

While living In Minonk he was a faithful member of the Minonk Baptist church.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, April 8) from the Wilcox Funeral Home in Minonk, with the Rev. E. R. Williams, pastor of the Minonk Baptist church, officiating. Burial was in the Davison cemetery, west of Minonk.

In an interview with News-Dispatch Publisher C. R. Denson, in 1944, in which Mr. Davison was reminiscing about the old days, he said that his father told him that when he first came to Minonk in 1854, there were only two houses here and the largest thing between Minonk and Pattonsburg was the rosin weed. His father also had served as county treasurer of this county, twice by appointment and once by election.
