EL PASO TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL
The El Paso Township High School district was organized in the spring of 1915. It was then planned to erect a modern building at once, but legal difficulties arose that postponed the realization of those plans until the present summer.

The new building will be located on the Fair grounds at the head of Elm Street. The central part of the building will be devoted to the regular work of the high school and will consist of two stories and a basement. The East wing of the building will be given up to a gymnasium having a regulation basketball floor and scats for some five hundred spectators. Underneath the gymnasium will be located a swimming pool twenty feet by sixty feet. The West wing of the building will be an auditorium sealing seven hundred people, which will be used for all public gatherings.

El Paso Township High School has the largest enrollment in the county. It is fully accredited by the University of Illinois and holds membership in the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. At present thirty-two units of work are offered by the school and accepted by all universities in sixteen states.

The territory from which the students come includes sixty-eight sections of the high school district and much of the non-high school territory of Woodford County. About twenty-five students are enrolled at the present time from non-high school territory.

The various courses of study offered include all of the regular classical studios together with courses in Home Economics, Commercial and Vocational subjects. Courses in Agriculture, Chemistry and additional work in Manual Training will be given as soon as the new building is completed.

CLASS OF '20
The largest Freshman class in the history of the El Paso Township High School met on September 11, 1916. The school and many of the pupils were new lo ns and we were quite tilled with awe at the thought of being part of the High School. In fact, the first few days we did nothing but wander about, doing foolish tricks, and affording amusement for the other classes.

After the novelty wore off we had our first class meeting at which we elected our class officers, who were: Lyle Marvin, president, Donald Seaton, vice-president, Martha Beshers, secretary and treasurer. For a while all went well but one morning the Junior pennant was found decorated with green paint and suspicion was thrown on the Freshies as being the guilty party. During the day many furious glances were cast in the direction of the Freshmen and after school the two classes met in a mighty conflict in front of the Jefferson Park building. It had been raining for several days and the road was a mass of mud and water. In all this slush the boys struggled in spite of Mr. Swatsley's best efforts to subdue the angry rioters. The fight was continued into the evening when Cockey Seaton received a free hair cut at the hands of the Juniors. This clash between the two classes has gone down as the greatest battle in the school history. After nearly two months of work we felt the need of some recreation so a Hallowe'en party was planned. Everyone had a line time, including several Sophs, who tried to interfere with the festivities. A Valentine party was held at Kenneth Boner's home later in the year. This was considered one of the best parties a Freshie ever went to. The rest of the year was spent quietly for we were anxiously looking forward to our Sophomore year.

When we met again in the fall of 1917. we felt very important, for were we not Sophomores, the thing we had dreamed of all our Freshman year? Our class had dwindled away, as some had dropped out, others moved away, and a few were so happy in the Freshman class that they decided to remain there another year. Our class officers this year were: Eugene Cleary, president, Henry Eft, vice-president, and Bernice Burger, secretary and treasurer. Early in the fall a weiner roast was held at Gene Mayne's where everyone enjoyed playing games in the new barn. This was the only party held during the year since so many of us were struggling in Miss Steven's geometry and English History classes. The death of Kenneth Boner, one of our classmates, marks a sad event in our class history.

Again school opened and the Class of '20 was assembled in the Jefferson Park building. Of the forty-one who entered as Freshmen in the fall of 1916. only twenty-one remained, hut what we lost in numbers we gained in wisdom and dignity, Only another year until we would be Seniors, the far-away pinnacle of desire of former days. Our class officers were: Ruth Holt, president. Henry Eft, vice-president, and Vivian Lancaster, secretary and treasurer. The epidemic of influenza in the fall closed the schools for seven weeks.

This must have had a pacifying influence upon us for we were exceptionally quiet all winter. In fact, there were no social events at all until the annual Junior-Senior Banquet, which was a great success. The spring always calls for a picnic so we invited the Sophomores to go with us to Bridge Park. From the amount of weiners left, it was thought our noble efforts were not appreciated. The last important event for us that year was a picnic at Miller Park. The Sophomores invited us and since we knew the Freshmen were longing for an outing we invited them. The greatest difficulty was lack of cars to take all of them.

For the fourth time in our Class History, school opened. At our first class meeting nominations were made for class officers. Then followed a heated campaign that rivaled any in political history. After many informal debates and speeches, the election came off with Mansfield King elected president, Dallas Zeiger, vice-president, and Henry Eft, secretary and treasurer.

We also decided to publish an Annual. As we soon discovered that this took money we gave an oyster supper in Heading's Hall. This met with less success than was expected. Life went on quietly with only a few disturbances to annoy us, the greatest, possibly, being the semester exams-the first we had had since our Freshman year. Since then we have been busily engaged in gathering material for the 1920 Purple and Gold. This task, as well as our school life in El Paso will soon be ended. We leave the E. T. H. S. with fond regrets and diverse aims.
