English was laid out in 1839 by W. W. Cummins.  It was originally named Hartford.  Incorporated in 1884 the town was then changed to English after the Hoosier Statesman William Hayden English.   In 1883 the Air Line Railroad was laid and the town began to grow.  In 1896 English became the new county seat.
