Fredonia name derived giving a Latin ending to freedom around 1800 which gives it the meaning "place of freedom".  The town was platted in 1818 and laid out on the banks of the Ohio River by Allen D. Thom and Robert  S. Thorn.  The first saloon was opened in Fredonia in 1830.

In 1833 a scientific school was started in Freedonia.
