Leavenworth was named for its proprietors Seth and Zebulan Leavenworth and was laid out in 1818.  By 1835 the town had become incorporated.  It was flooded in 1937 and rebuilt in 1938 on hills behind the old site.

Seth Leavenworth helped build the first mill to ground wheat and corn, and for lumber to be sawed.

Leavenworth was a landing port for all the trade which went to Salem, Paoli, Bono, Jasper and Bloomington.  A large quantity of trade passed through Leavenworth until the railroads changed commercial relations.

The first tavern was opened in 1827 by Elisha Tadlock.
