E, 14th Ammunition Train. Died of influenza October 13, 1918, Camp
Custer, Mich. Buried in Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Dubois, Dubois
County, Ind.

Clay miner. Entered service September 20, 1917, Jasper, Ind. Sent to

Sent overseas in April 1918; assigned to Company A, 2nd Engineers.
Killed in action July 19, 1918 in France. (Burial place unknown.)

27, 1918, Evansville, Ind. Trained at Great Lakes Naval Training
Station, Ill., and Camp Paul Jones. Transferred to 41st Company, Radio
School, Cambridge, Mass. Died of pneumonia September 25, 1918, in Naval
Hospital, Chelsea, Mass. Buried in St. Anthony Cemetery, Dubois County,
Ind.
BURKE, LEONARD JOSEPH ----Private

Burke; born December 22, 1895, Jasper, Ind. Cabinet maker. Entered
service September 19, 1917, Jasper, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.
Transferred to Camp Sevier, S. C. Overseas in May, 1918; assigned to
Company F, 120th Infantry, 30th Division. Participated in battles of
Bellecourt, Vaux, Andigny. Killed in action October 18, 1918, near St.
Quentin. Buried in British Military Cemetery, No. 642, South Souplet,
Nord. Plot B, Row 6, Grave No. 146.
COOPER, ELMER EARL ----Private,
Signal Corps
Son of Gifford A. and Sarah E. Cooper; born November 30, 1889, Cass
Township, Dubois County, Ind. Teacher. Called into service March 28,
1918, Bloomington, Ind. Sent to Ft. Leavenworth, Kan.; assigned to
Company A, 101st Field Signal Battalion, 26th Division. Embarked for
France June 20, 1918. Took part in St. Mihiel Drive, Verdun, and Meuse.
Gassed, later contracted pneumonia, and died December 1, 1918. Buried
in Grave No. 40, Montigny, Haute Marne, France.
COX, JAMES HAROLD ------ Private

June 17, 1893, Huntingburg, Ind. Traveling salesman. Called into
service October 3, 1917, Jasper, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.;
assigned to Company A, 113th Machine Gun Battalion. Transferred to Camp
Sevier, S. C.; then to Camp Greenleaf, Ga ; assigned to Company G,
335th Infantry, 84th Division. Went overseas in May, 1918. Gassed, and
died from effects of wounds October 30, 1918, in American Hospital, Le
Treport, France.
DUFENDACH, MARK CHRISTOPHER -----

Son of Edward H. and Lydia C. Dufendach; born May 7, 1898, Huntingburg,
Dubois County, Ind. Printer. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army April 16,
1917, Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Sent to Douglas, Ariz.; assigned to
Company I, 18th Infantry. Overseas with the 1st Division in June, 1917.
Served in Sommerville Sector. Died July 18, 1918, in Field Hospital No.
12 from wounds received in battle of Soissons. Buried in Grave 22, of
American plot, French Cemetery, Commune of Pierrefonds, France.
ELLIS, BENJAMIN J. ------ Hospital
Apprentice. U.S.N.
Son of Ellsworth E. and Sophia W. Ellis; born March 9, 1897, Elon,
Orange County, Ind. Later moved to Cuzco, Dubois County, Ind. Teacher.
Entered U.S. Navy May 31, 1918; sent to Great Lakes Training Station,
Chicago, Ill.; assigned to Company C-4, 6th Regiment, Camp Perry,
Reserve Hospital Forces. Died of pneumonia September 24, 1918, Great
Lakes Naval Training Station. Buried near Union Valley Church, Cuzco,
Dubois County, Ind.
HARMEYER, FREDERICK WILLIAM AUGUST

Son of Louis and Amelia Rebber
Harmeyer; born September 5, 1890, Holland, Dubois County, Ind. Tailor.
Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army in April, 1917, in North Dakota. Assigned
to Company H, 26th Infantry. Promoted to Corporal. Went overseas, and
was reported missing in action July 19, 1918. Later reported killed in
action on the same date. Buried "in France."
HAWKINS. CLARENCE ------- Corporal
Son of Thomas and Melvina Hawkins;
born August 17, 1898, Huntingburg, Dubois County, Ind. Miner. Enlisted
in U.S. Regular Army November 13, 1916, Columbus Barracks, Ohio.
Assigned to Company C, 28th Infantry. Went overseas with the First
Division in June, 1917. Killed by bursting shell May 30, 1918, in
Battle of Cantigny, when going over the top for the fourth time. Buried
on battlefield where he fell. Recommended for citation for heroic
conduct.
HUFF, HERBERT MONROE .... Private
Son of Albert and Emma Carter Huff;
born January 15, 1896, near Birdseye, Dubois County, Ind. Farm laborer.
Called into service June 25, 1918, Jasper, Ind. Sent to Camp Sherman,
Ohio. Transferred to Camp Mills, N. Y.; assigned to Company G, 335th
Infantry. Went overseas in September. 1918. Stricken with influenza, he
was taken to Red Cross Military Hospital No. 4, Mossley Hill,
Liverpool, where he died of pneumonia November 3, 1918. Buried in
Everton Cemetery, Liverpool, England.
HUMBERT, JOSEPH FRANK - - - - Private
Son of Henry and Mary Schepers Humbert (deceased); born June 3, 1893,
Celestine, Dubois County, Ind. Farm laborer. Entered service June 23,
1918, and was sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Assigned to Battery E, 26th
Field Artillery. Transferred to Camp McClellan, Ala.; assigned to 55th
Company, 9th Regiment. Died of influenza March 18, 1919, in Government
Hospital, West Baden, Ind. Buried in St. Raphaels Catholic Cemetery,
Dubois, Ind.

Hunefeld; born October 17, 1889, Holland, Dubois County, Ind. Farmer.
Entered service August 25, 1918, Jasper, Ind. Sent to Camp Custer,

Depot. Died of pneumonia October 26, 1918, Camp Custer, Mich. Buried in
Holland Cemetery, Dubois County, Ind.
JOHN, FRANK KASPER -----Private
Son of Kasperand Helena Gutzwieler
John; born March 15, 1894, Jasper, Ind. Farmer. Called into service May
27, 1918, Maquoketa, Iowa. Sent to Camp Dodge, Iowa; assigned to
Machine Gun Company, 352nd Regiment, 88th Division. Sailed from Camp
Mills August 16, 1918. Died of pneumonia October 13, 1918, in France.
Buried near Hcricourt, Aisne, in the American-French Cemetery. Body to
be returned to his home in Dubois County, Ind., for final interment.
KRODEL, GEORGEILEO ------ Cook
Son of Herman (deceased) and Veronica
Gerber Krodel; born December 18, 1889, Jasper, Ind. Proprietor of
restaurant. Called into service September 4, 1918, Jasper, Ind. Sent to
Camp Grant, Ill.; assigned to Company D, 5th Limited Service Regiment.
Promoted to Cook. Died of influenza October 3, 1918, Camp Grant, Ill.
Buried in Jasper, Ind. The first Jasper County soldier to give up his
life. Survived by widow, Agnes Brady Krodel, and one son, LeRoy Krodel,
Chicago, Ill.
LANGE, ROBERT JOHN -----Private
Son of John and Margaret Witte Lange;
born August 4, 1895, Ferdinand, Dubois County, Ind. Farmer. Called into
service September 19, 1917, Jasper, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor. Ky.;
assigned to Company G, 335th Infantry. Transferred to Camp Sevier, S.
C.; assigned to Company F, 120th Infantry, 30th Division. Embarked from
Boston Harbor May 14, 1918. Wounded in action near Ypres, and died
August 24, 1918, in hospital, Bergues Nord, France. Body returned to
U.S., and buried in St. Ferdinand's Cemetery, Dubois County, Ind.
LEAGUE, GEORGE WILLIAM ------Private
Son of Charles S. and Jennie Pherson League; born September 27, 1897,
Greenwood, Johnson County, Ind. When a mere boy he was adopted by Mr.
and Mrs. Isaac Brown, Duff, Dubois County, Ind. Farmer. Enlisted in
U.S. Regular Army February 9, 1917, Huntingburg, Ind. Sent to Columbus
Barracks, Ohio; assigned to Machine Gun Company, 16th Regiment.
Transferred to El Paso, Tex. Overseas June 12, 1917. Participated in
numerous battles. Killed in action at Soissons, sometime between July
19 and 24, 1918.

Son of William and Mary Eifert Line;
born September 26, 1894, Jasper, Ind. Stenographer. Called into service
June 24, 1918, Indianapolis, Ind. Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio; assigned
to 8th Company, 2nd Training Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade. Overseas
in September, 1918; assigned to Company G, 357th Infantry, 90th
Division. Killed in action November 5, 1918, Villa, France. Buried in
Argonne American Cemetery, No. 1232, Romagne, Grave No. 121, Sec. 109,

LUSCH, ALBERT A. -----Wagoner
Son of Anthony and Cecelia Snyder
Lusch; born April 13, 1893, Centralia, Ill. Moved to Dubois County,
Ind. in 1896. Blacksmith. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army May 7, 1917,
Louisville, Ky. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; then to Washington Barracks,
D. C. Assigned to 138th Field Artillery. Transferred to 464th
Engineers. Overseas in July, 1918. Died of pneumonia October 19, 1918.
Buried in American Cemetery No. 608, Seringes-et-Nesles, France, Sec.
E, Plot I, Grave No. 2.

Company E, 10th Infantry. Died of influenza October 10, 1918, Camp
Custer, Mich. Buried in Cross Roads Cemetery, Dubois, Dubois County,
Ind.
NOBLE, WILLIAM HENRY ----- Private
Son of George W. and Mary Dillard Noble; born August 22 1892,
Chambersburg, Orange County, Ind. Laborer. Called into service July 23,
1918, Jasper, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned to 55th Company,
14th Training Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade; then to 4th Company, 1st
Training Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Died of pneumonia December
11,1918, in Base Hospital, Camp Taylor, Ky. Buried at Cuzco, Dubois
County, Ind.
PICKHARDT, BERTRAM ----- Corporal
Son of Ernest W. and Caroline Pickhardt; born July 30, 1889,
Huntingburg, Ind. Educated in Indiana University. Postmaster. Entered
Officers Training Camp, Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind. in August, 1917. In
November, 1917 enlisted as a private, and was sent to Camp Greene, N.
C. Overseas in May, 1918; assigned to Battery F, 16th Field Artillery,
4th Division. Took part in battles of Vesle, Chateau-Thierry, and St.
Mihie1. Killed in action September 29, 1918. Buried in U.S. Cemetery,
Romagne, France.

pneumonia October 13, 1918, Camp Custcr, Mich. Buried at Ferdinand,

Jasper, Ind. Cabinet maker. Entered U.S. Navy March 27, 1918,
Shclbyville, Ind. Sent to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station,
Chicago, Ill. Transferred to the Vermont, and assigned to duty as 3rd
Class Fireman. Died of acute heart exhaustion, while on board ship in
Panama Canal, July 20, 1919. Buried in St. Joseph Cemetery, Jasper, Ind.

placed in the 3rd Recruiting Squadron, Signal Corps Section. Died of
pneumonia January 29, 1919, Ft. Wayne, Mich. Buried in Mt. Zion

with 84th Division. Died of pneumonia February 25 1919
Brest, France Body returned to U.S., and buried in Crown Hill Cemetery,
Indianapolis, Ind. Survived by widow, Loretta Harrington Vogel, and one
son, William Leonard Vogel Ir Indianapolis, Ind.

Vogl; born May 1, 1895, St. Henry, Dubois County, Ind. Tailor. Called
into service June 25, 1918, Jasper, Ind., and was sent to Camp Sherman,
Ohio. Assigned to Machine Gun Company, 335th Infantry, 84th Division.
Embarked from Camp Mills, N. Y., August 25, 1918. Transferred to
Company D, 320th Machine Gun Battalion, 82nd Division. Died of
pneumonia December 2, 1918. in France. Buried, Prauthoy, Haute Marne,
France.

born September 29, 1893, Hartford, Ky. Moved with parents to Dubois
County, Ind. in 1894. Called into service October 4, 1917, but was
discharged one week later. Called into service again, April 1, 1918.
Sent to Camp Grant, Ill.; assigned to Company B, 5th Regiment Limited
Service. Died of pneumonia October 1, 1918, Camp Grant, Ill. Buried in
Oak Hill Cemetery, Evansville, Ind. Survived by widow, Cora Crabtrec Waddle,
Evansville Ind.
