    ELKHART COUNTY, INDIANA

CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS BURIED AT COUNTY EXPENSE
(Found in the Commissioners papers located at the Elkhart County Historical Society)
On March 6th of 1889, the government passed an act authorizing the burial of deceased ex-Union soldiers, sailors, or marines
at the expense of the county. Taken from the commissioners records, approval for burial
expenses was granted for the following individuals:

Solomon S. Abbott, enlisted August 7. 1162 as a Private in 60 H100 Ohio Vol. infantry. He was discharged 20 June 1865  He died May 25, 1889 at age of 54. He was from Concord Township and is buried in Elkhart (Note He is buried in Grace Lawn Cemetery. Block F Elkhart. His grave is marked by a tree-stump tombstone. He was born 7 February 1835.)

Richard J Robb, enlisted March 21, 1862 as a private in Co K. 11 Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was discharged Sept. 19,1862. He was listed as a shoemaker He died April 29, 1889 - no age given and is buried in Elkhart (Richard is buried in Grace Lawn Cemetery. Block M. Elkhart. He has a government issued stone with his service record only  no name or dale.)

Andrew J Sutton enlisted in January 1862. He was a Private in the 3rd Ohio Cavalry. He was discharged in November 1864.  He was listed as a laborer when he died on April 17 1819 at the age of 63. He was buried in Elkhart (Andrew was buried in Grace Lawn Cemetery [ Block M] in Elkhart. He has no stone marking his grave.)

Wm Hatfield enlisted September 24,1861. He served as a Private [Co K]  30th Indiana Infantry He was discharged on September 23. 1864 He was a Laborer when he died May 12. 1889 at the age of 54. He was buried in Goshen. (William is buried in Oakridge Cemetery. Section 22. He has only a name stone - no dates.)

Alexander H. Hunt enlisted on December 16, 1863  He was a Private in the 129th Regiment. He was discharged on June 16, 1865. He was a laborer when he died on May 21. 1889 at the age of 62. He is buried in LaGrange, Indiana

Andrew Niswander enlisted on December 16,1863. He was a Private in Co D 12th Indiana Calvary  He was discharged Nov. 16,1865 He was a clerk when he died on April 22. 1889 at the age of 45 and is buried in Elkhart. (Andrew C. is buried in Grace Lawn cemetery. Elkhart. Block M. His stone slates he died at the age of 45 years and 7days.)

Charles C Smith enlisted in December 1863. He was in the 12th Indiana Calvary Co B. He was discharged on August 30, 1864  He was an iron molder when he died on March 5.1889 at the age of 40. He was buried in Goshen (Charles is buried in the Clinton Brick Cemetery His stone has only his name and his military service on it. No dates)

Isaac N. Conrad enlisted on September 10, 1864. He was a Private in the 162nd Ohio National Guard. He was discharged on December 15,1864  He was a plasterer when he died on April 17. 1889 at the age of 55y 1m 3d   He is buried at Grace Lawn in Elkhart (Isaac has a government issued stone in Block H & 1 at Grace Lawn. No dates are on the stone )

Joel Spaid enlisted on March 4, 1864. He was a Private in the 48th Indiana Infantry. He was discharged on July 15. 1865. He was a carpenter. He died June 23, 1889 at the age of 43 and is buried in Elkhart. (Joel is buried in Grace Lawn. Block H & 1 Lot 88. Elkhart according to the American legion records.There is a stone on this lot that is illegible.)

Henry Tom enlisted on February 2. 1865. He served in the 57 Indiana Infantry. He was discharged on July 17,1865. He died June 20 1889 at the age of 44 and is buried in Goshen. (There is a Henry Toms buried in Oakridge Cemetery. Goshen, in an unmarked grave in Section 12.)

John Fry enlisted on Dec. 1,1863. He was a Private in Company D 12th Indiana Calvary. He was discharged November 20, 1865 He was a laborer and died November 9. 1889 at the age of 55. He is buried in Elkhart. (John is buried in Grace Lawn. Block M. in Elkhart  He has no marker other than a stone with his name on it and three members of his family.)

Frank Donayhul enlisted on October 21,1863. He was a Private in Co D 128th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged on January 9. 1865. He was a laborer and died September 12. 1889 at the age of 49. He is buried in Elkhart  (Francis Donnaghue is buried in Grace Lawn Cemetery. Block R. Elkhart.)

Wm Carpenter enlisted on February 10,1865. He was a Private in Co E 60th Regiment Ohio Infantry. He was discharged on July 28, 1865. He was a laborer. He died November 21, 1889 at the age of 42. He is buried in Goshen (William J. is buried in Oakridge Cemetery, Goshen, Section 21.)

Fredrick Abrecht enlisted on December 25. 1861. He was a Private in the 48th Indiana Co. H. He was discharged  January 16. 1865. He was a laborer. Fredrick died November 9, 1889 at the age of 55. He is buried in Goshen. (There is no listing of his burial in Elkhart county. He is not listed as a Civil War soldier on the American Legion list or at the local VA office. However, he is named as a member of this unit in Deahl's History of Elkhart County [1905], page 327.)

Thomas W. Biggs enlisted in 1862. He was a Private in the 15th Michigan Infantry. He was discharged on May 26, 1865. He was a tailor He died on January 11, 1891 at the age of 68. He is buried at Grace Lawn. (Thomas Bigg is buried in Block M at Grace Lawn Cemetery. Elkhart He has a government stone.)

Isaac M Shupert enlisted on August 15, 1861 & re-enlisted on Dec 12 1863. He served as a Corporal in Co C 2nd volunteers. He was discharged on December 11,1863 & again on September 28. 1865. He was a drayman. He died March 2, 1891 at the age of 53. He is buried in Grace Lawn. Elkhart. (Isaac is buried in block M. His stone states his age at death was 54 years 27days.)

James H. Russey gave no date of enlistment. He was a Private in the Volunteer Infantry. No discharge date was given. He had no occupation listed. James died May 24. 1891 at the age of 47. He is buried in Grace Lawn, Elkhart. (James is buried in block M. He has a government issued stone. His stone says he was in the band of the 11th Michigan Infantry.)

William Whitmyer enlisted on October 24, 1864. He was a Private in the Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged on July 2.1865. He was a butcher and a well digger  He died November 17. 1891 at the age of 54  He is buried in Grace Lawn, Elkhart. (William is buried in Block M. He has a stone with his wife.)

James H. Russey (see above - second filing) was a Private for 1 year in the Michigan infantry and 3 years in the United Stales infantry. He was a musician. James died May 22. 1891.

Geo W. Vannote has no information except he was buried in Elkhart. The form was dated August 28, 1891 and listed Jefferson township. (George is buried in block H & I in Grace Lawn cemetery. He has a government stone that says his service was Co D 100 Regiment Indiana volunteers. He was 68 years old when he died.)

Martin Thomas enlisted on October 10. 1863. He was a Private in Co D. 12th Indiana Calvary Volunteers. He was discharged on June 13, 1865. He was a claim agent for pensions. Martin died December 22, 1891 at the age of 68 years 10 months. He is buried at Grace lawn in Elkhart. (Martin is buried in block M. He has a government issued stone. He also has a stone with his wife.)
